  1. Chapter 9
  2.
  3. >You cough, sending grey dust everywhere.
  4. >It flies to your opening eyes, thus blinding you longer.
  5. >You cringe as you taste it in your mouth, and proceed to push yourself up.
  6. >You give your head a firm shake, and get to your feel.
  7. >A dreadful low boom rings in your ears, as you blink multiple times to push out the dust in your eyes.
  8. >The boom is suddenly cut off, replaced with what sounds like a light scratch on plastic.
  9. >You vision finally returns, and you see what seems like an endless valley of dull, dead grey.
  10. >The scratching suddenly dies off, replaced by a soft tune of music.
  11. http://youtu.be/O1YK2a-B9zk
  12. >It seems distant, echoing over the valley away.
  13. >Having no other option left, you begin to make your way to the source of the noise.
  14. >You know this tune.
  15. >It is definitely familiar, something you’ve heard of before.
  16. >Stumbling awkwardly through the empty, vast desert.
  17. >But there is no sand here.
  18. >Just… dust.
  19. >Nothing but dust.
  20. >And it is cold.
  21. >Very cold.
  22.
  23. >The ocean of sky blue hair splits slowly, giving way to the brush.
  24. >It slowly flows down and touches the creature underneath, gently startling it.
  25. >”Anon, you’re doing it again.”
  26. >The hand freezes in place, as if time stood still.
  27. >With a sigh, she turns around, the hair going through the brush once more.
  28. >Her disgruntled frown melts into a smile, as she looks at the person behind her.
  29. >Putting up a hoof on his cold hands, she slowly guided it to her mane.
  30. >Her horn glowed, and his hands began animating.
  31. >”Just do it like this. Brush down, brush down.”
  32. >Like a mother teaching her child, continuously showing how it is done.
  33. >Her expression bears kindness and warmth, patiently waiting for him to learn.
  34. >But as soon as her grasp ends, the hand freezes once again.
  35. >Pouting, she gives up and slides onto his chest.
  36. >Both hands up and ready, he sits still, like a statue.
  37. >Slowly dragging his arms around her, Luna sighs happily.
  38. >She rocks back and forth in his hold, enjoying his presence.
  39. >But he is so cold.
  40. >So, so cold.
  41.
  42. >You trudge on, not growing tired or bored.
  43. >Hypnotized by the tune playing, you begin to climb the valley.
  44. >It is a steep climb, but you manage.
  45. >Fingers digging into the odd soil, hands upon rocks, you continue to climb.
  46. >Dust is flying everywhere, and you almost trip on the rolling rocks.
  47. >You finally reach out your hand into what feels like the ending groove of the supposed hill.
  48. >Upon lifting yourself up, you see what you’ve been climbing.
  49. >The vast, hollow opening almost called out to you, echoing any noise you’ve made.
  50. >You stand on your feet, perching yourself on the edge of the crater.
  51. >Looking over to the other side, you estimate it must be at least two hundred meters wide.
  52. >But something else catches your attention.
  53. >Above the dull horizon, behind the radiant orange light- lay a single shape.
  54. >Placing a hand over your eyes, you try to shield the light.
  55. >Your vision improves, and you spot green and blue.
  56. >You see small lines of white on the planet, presumably clouds.
  57. >You fall to your knees, silent over your realization.
  58. >You knew exactly where you are now.
  59. >You were on the moon.
  60.
  61. >Prancing happily in her yellow dress, Luna moved through the gardens.
  62. >Having a certain person in tow (and having made much distance between the two), Luna enjoyed her walks.
  63. >She was beginning to understand why many ponies preferred the company of the sun.
  64. >No offense taken, of course- she had all the nights she needed.
  65. >She passed a sultry gaze towards the hunched, dull body.
  66. >If you knew what she meant.
  67. >His eyes are still wide open, just the way he was left.
  68. >Luna might have adjusted it a bit.
  69. >His lips were still like a statue’s, fixed in place.
  70. >”Come on, Anon, smile!”
  71. >His lips slowly curled into an awkward smile, as directed by Luna’s magic.
  72. >Taking a few steps back to admire her work, Luna continued her path.
  73.
  74. >Looking over her sister, Celestia let out a loud sigh, not wanting to see anyone like this.
  75. >She was alone in her dark room, unsure if she was to bring her sister out of her stupor or not.
  76. >Probably it would be best if she left things as it were.
  77. >It is disheartening, but it kept Nightmare Moon in control.
  78. >At least it seemed to.
  79. >For the sake of Equestria, it was enough.
  80. >Just enough.
  81. >But, if things were to arise again, she would need to take drastic actions.
  82. >She wasn’t even sure if Anonymous was dead, last time she checked, he was still breathing.
  83. >It would appear he was asleep, but nothing would wake him up.
  84. >Celestia decided it would be best to keep him confined to a bed.
  85. >Until Luna started losing it.
  86. >By then, she was somepony Celestia never knew, somepony completely out of it.
  87. >She dared not get in her sister’s way, afraid of some sort of a breakdown.
  88. >But as she stood now, she wished she stood in her sister’s path.
  89. >Maybe some amount of her sanity would’ve been preserved then.
  90. >She would’ve been heartbroken, saddened- of course- but at least she would get over it.
  91. >But this madness is simply put- absurd.
  92. >No respect for both sides.
  93. >Celestia then studied Anonymous, who has been reduced to a husk since that attack.
  94. >He seemed responsive enough; he could walk when given the prompt, and ate a little.
  95. >But his eyes stared into nothing; it felt as if his gaze went through the pony if she stood in his line of sight.
  96. >Luna might try to contort his facial expressions into her liking, but it always reverted back to the blank look.
  97. >His body was here, but his mind?
  98. >Even the all-knowing goddess was rendered silent at that.
  99. >She could only sit by and hope for the best.
  100.
  101. >Letting out a long sigh, you stare into the planet.
  102. >You fucked up now, Anon.
  103. >Bam, poof- straight to the moon.
  104. >It was a great run.
  105. >Maybe if you-
  106. >Is that song still on?
  107. >The tune keeps tickling into the back of your head, in that same volume you’ve been hearing.
  108. >You turn and look into the crater, the gaping valley on the surface of the moon.
  109. >The walls of the crater set a wide blanket of shadow over the opening, masking whatever the crater would have.
  110. >Oh gee, what might be there?
  111. >Probably rocks and more rocks.
  112. >Exciting.
  113. >But the music is still coming from there.
  114. >And you don’t find aliens likely.
  115. >So, either you find something down there, or someone.
  116. >Neither of the two could be bad.
  117. >You perch yourself by the tip of the wall, and look down one last time.
  118. >With a small step, you begin to slide down the curve.
  119. >Dust and moon flakes fly everywhere, as you slowly near the bottom.
  120. >You don’t pick up much speed, thanks to the low gravity and the shape of the crater.
  121. >The song is definitely louder now.
  122. >The noise echoes through the walls, the voice of the singer getting scratchier every boom.
  123. >Your footsteps also make quite a noise, pebbles crushed under your weight.
  124. >Considering your weight here, it must be quite brittle.
  125. >Your eyes slowly adjust to the darkness, and you spot a small shadow in what seems to be the centre of the crater.
  126. >Once you are closer, colours begin to show.
  127. >A hint of bronze yellow… and brown?
  128. >Something is also moving on the mid-section of the shape.
  129. >Only after a few more steps you realize it is a record player.
  130. >The song is clear as day now.
  131. “Giant steps are what you take-“
  132. >Son of a bitch.
  133. >The Police.
  134. “Walking on the moon.”
  135. >Your moment of realization is suddenly halted with another noise.
  136. >The record player switches off with a disc-scratching noise.
  137. >Was that another cough?
  138. >A small cloud of the all-too-familiar particles fly up.
  139. >You quickly look over the record player to another figure laid behind it.
  140. >You also notice another detail.
  141. >The tar-like liquid is present around the figure as well.
  142. >Actually, it seems to be seeping out of it.
  143. >You take a few steps back, knowing what this is a source of.
  144. >Nightmare Moon.
  145. >Your calm back-track quickly devolves into frantic running.
  146. >You try running up the walls, but the curve is too steep.
  147. >Why didn’t you see this coming?
  148. >It was all a trap to reel you in.
  149. >You feel something pinning your left wrist.
  150. >Panic clouds any rational thought in your mind, even forgetting to quip your last words.
  151. >”Ah, I knew you’d come.”
  152. >A chill runs down your spine.
  153. >That voice.
  154. >A tight grip is on your chest, and you are quickly pulled away.
  155. >The distance you travelled zooms past under you in a blink of an eye.
  156. >You gasp, and it was the only thing on your mind to do.
  157. >Say, how were you breathing here the whole time?
  158. >Nightmare comes to a halt right by the record player, right back where you found her.
  159.
  160. >”It will be fun, Anonymous! I even got the song and all!”
  161. >The blue princess skipped towards the old record player.
  162. >Age claimed most of its colours, it would suggest it wasn’t given enough attention.
  163. >With a quick tap on the arm, the song starts right away.
  164. http://youtu.be/ZX14TMvBGFw
  165. >She moves in with a specially well-dressed human, and begins to move in tune.
  166.
  167. >Nightmare turns you around, and holds onto your shoulder with her hoof.
  168. >A joint curls over your shoulder, keeping her steady.
  169. >The phonograph whirrs into life, playing a different song.
  170. >As soon as it plays, Nightmare begins to move with it.
  171. >And more importantly, you too.
  172. >As you slowly turn your gaze to Nightmare, you notice she had lost her armor.
  173. >With her eyes locked on to yours, you cannot resist the allure to stare back.
  174. >If you stare at the abyss long enough…
  175.
  176. >The phonograph to their left, the couple slowly danced to the music.
  177. >Nothing special, just a few steps back and forth.
  178. >Encompassed by the steady melody, Luna came to a realization.
  179. >No matter how away, Anonymous, Anon- will always be special to her.
  180. >Her special somepony.
  181.
  182. >With the machine to your left, the two of you moved in unison.
  183. >For a while, the two of you were silent, simply looking at each other.
  184. >You were more cautious on the things she might do, but Nightmare seemed calm enough.
  185. >Her irises gleamed with a hint of life, although unblinking and unmoving.
  186.
  187. >”Come on, Anonymous, you have to participate!”
  188. >Luna brought up his hands, and placed it on her hips.
  189.
  190. >You unwillingly position your hands where her hips would be, as if you were dancing with another person.
  191. >You half-expected her throw some sultry comment, but she kept her lips shut.
  192. >You finally manage to break the silence.
  193. “Did you bring me here?”
  194. >She blinked slowly, still keeping up her movements.
  195. “What’s going on?”
  196. >No answer.
  197. “Will you-“
  198. >”Shhhh…”
  199. >She stops you, trying to savor the moment.
  200. >It works for a moment or two, but you rebound as quickly as you were brought down.
  201. “Luna, I know you’re in there, snap out of it.”
  202. >Her calm look twitches slightly, cracking under those words.
  203. “Luna, Luna? Please…”
  204.
  205. >”Will you tell me you love me, Anon?”
  206. >Luna whispered at him, her head buried on his chest.
  207. >She was met with a stoic silence.
  208. >”Please?”
  209. >Still nothing.
  210. >”Just this once, I’ll never ask again.”
  211. >She looked up to him with hope, the bags under her eyes showing for the first time.
  212.
  213. >Nightmare simply cocked her head by an inch, looking curiously.
  214. >A soft smile hung on her face, uncaring.
  215. “Luna! Get me out of here!” You shout, shaking her slightly.
  216. >Her face is still frozen in place, looking at you with the warmest smile.
  217. >You are beginning to get worried, something is wrong.
  218. >You land a slap on her, to snap her out of it.
  219. >She recoils at the hit, her expression finally changing.
  220. >She stares back at you, with a completely different emotion.
  221. >Her smile is gone, replaced with a stoic straight line.
  222. >But her eyes.
  223. >Her eyes pierce into you, radiating hatred.
  224.
  225. >”Please?”
  226. >Her words bounce off the figure.
  227. >”After all we’ve been through…”
  228.
  229. >Her form begins to crack, revealing the Luna you knew so much.
  230. >Her sky blue mane was a mess, her coat coming dirty.
  231. >But most importantly-
  232. >She seemed to leak out the black liquid, it slowly dripping out of her mouth and eyes.
  233. >You try to back away, but her hoof holds you tight.
  234. >”After all we’ve been through…”
  235. >Her voice sounds like static, something like a broken recording.
  236.
  237. >Bringing up all her energy, Luna blasted Anonymous, hurling him across the empty room.
  238. >His body landed with a dull thud, giving her no more satisfaction.
  239. >”WHY?! WHY WON’T YOU SAY IT?” She shrieked, eyes beginning to water.
  240.
  241. >You feel a sharp pain as you land on the ground.
  242. >Your shaky vision can only make out the distance you’ve travelled.
  243. >”Please, why, why, why…”
  244.
  245. >Luna breaks into sobs, falling over the floor.
  246. >She wants him to comfort her.
  247. >She needs him to say the words.
  248. >But she knows.
  249. >She knew it all along.
  250.
  251. >You can only feel pity for the creature before you, so desperate for someone to comfort her.
  252. >Being alone for so long… You can only imagine the crushing feeling.
  253. >Slowly making your way to her-
  254. >You know.
  255. >You knew it all along.
  256. >As you crouch next to her crying figure-
  257. >As you look down and hold out your hand-
  258. >As you see the pain in her blighted eyes-
  259. >As you realize the only way to escape-
  260. >And you knew it all along.
  261. >You knew-
  262.
  263. >…You had to love her.
