Comparing TCB Scans' Translation of One Piece Chapter 1101 to the Original Japanese Text

TL;DR: Comments are on: 0, 1, 2a, 6a, 6b, 8a, 8c, 8e, 9b, 11d, 14b, 15e. 2a is particularly important. The next chapter won't be out until Christmas, but it will feature a special enlarged collaboration cover page. Any errors will be corrected & updated on the pastebin.

Disclaimer: My intent is not to discredit the work of TCB Scans. I simply want to provide a more "transparent" understanding of the content as intended by and as provided by Oda Eiichirō, such that words/statements/dialogue/narration/etc. can then be interpreted based on the original Japanese text, i.e. more accurate direct translation but minus the localisation. I will go over differences which, in my opinion, have some important apparent and/or potential context lost in translation and I will comment some explanation; the comparisons without explanation comments are just for fun; there are of course other translation inaccuracies in the chapter as well, but they do not change the intended conveyed context or information, hence, I won't be including their comparisons; lastly, of course there are lots of parts translated accurately, as well. While the official English release also has its imperfections, Stephen Paul's work is consistently reliable and we can always count on them for precise spellings of the names of characters, places, and things. Bottom line is that, yes, this is nitpicking, yes, this is pedantic, but at the same time, I feel you all deserve to fully understand parts which are potentially lost in translation. I will provide, but ultimately you have the freedom to read or not to read. Enjoy.



0. Cover Pages:

TCB Scans normally removes the text about tankōbon sales and refinishes it cleanly, since usually there's no significant information, but I'd like to share a fun tidbit from the Vegapunk coloured cover page:
- Original:【☆ボニーを取り巻き大いなる因縁！！１１００話突破記念表紙＆巻頭カラー！！】
- Meaning: ☆A grand destiny haloing around Bonney!! 1100 Chapter breakthrough celebration cover & coloured cover page!!
- Fun side note imo: Wordplay by Oda. The term「取り巻き」by itself means followers/cronies/entourage without context. However, within certain context such as this one, it would mean to surround/to cluster. Even deeper in this specific context, since Bonney is associated with gems & Jewelry, Oda triggers the usage of「取り巻き」from「取り巻きリング」which means halo ring. If I'm allowed to cook too long and burn down the cr**k house, I'll go into the haloing effects of the central natural gemstones being brilliantly radiated by its surrounding smaller gemstones and how haloing itself is referred to the phenomenon of light in the atmosphere when coloured or white rings are visible around the SUN or MOON i.e. NATURAL LIGHT.

Luffy's move:
- TCB Scans: GUM-GUM... AXE!!
- Original:【ゴムゴムのォ～～“戦斧”（オノ）ォ～】
- Comment: Very minor, but if anyone is ever confused as to whether it's "Axe" or "Battle Axe," it's written as battle axe but shouted out as/read as axe; i.e. in the anime you'd just hear Luffy say axe.



2. Page 2:

2a. Kuma to Dragon in flashback:
- TCB Scans: YOU SEEM FAMILIAR WITH THIS ISLAND... NOT ONLY THAT, BUT WHEN I WENT TO STRETCH MY LEGS EARLIER, I FOUND A REMOTE VILLAGE ON THE OUTSKIRTS... THERE WAS A YOUNG BOY THERE...
- Original:【あんたこの国に異常に詳しい．．．しかも国の外れの小さな村に足を伸ばし一人の少年を目で追っていた．．．．．．！！】
- Meaning: "You know this country to its extreme details... And yet, you'd unexpectedly visit a small village in the outskirts of the country to keep watch over a lone young boy......!!"
- Comment: This is a pretty significant difference in translation on TCB's part. Kuma didn't go to stretch his legs, nor did he find
 a remote village in the outskirts. The phrase「足を伸ばす」is a Japanese idiom which means "to unexpectedly visit a place," instead of the more literal "to stretch one's legs." Additionally, the word "strange/abnormal"「異常」can also usually be attached to "weather conditions"「気象」to make "Extreme weather"「異常気象」. Just saying.

2b. Dragon's reply:
- TCB Scans: IF YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT THIS, YOU MAY AS WELL KILL ME YOURSELF.
- Original:【おれを殺したいのなら続けろ．．．．．．】
- Meaning: "If you want to kill me, keep on [imploring]......"

2c. Last panel Luffy:
- TCB Scans: WHAT AN AWESOME FINISHING MOVE!! I'LL SAVE IT FOR WHEN I'M UP AGAINST A SUPER STRONG ENEMY!! AFTER I SET SAIL AND GET MY CREW...
- Original:【こりゃ必殺技だな！！海賊になって仲間集めするだろ！？】
- Meaning: "Now THIS is a finishing move!! When I become a pirate I'll be assembling a crew (nakama), right?"

- Meaning: "What was that presence just now... Gave me the chills. Are there any more beasts (the word used is honcho/master/leader) on this mountain!? I'll bring 'em down before I set sail!!"

5a. Narration box simply says "Sorbet Kingdom" without the MEANWHILE

5b. Bonney continues to ask, "is it here yet?" in repetition instead of saying HOW ABOUT NOW? or COME ON!!

5c. GyoGyo:
- TCB Scans: I'M SURE HE'S VERY BUSY WITH WORK. THAT, OR THE NEWS COOS KEEP MESSING UP.

- Meaning: "Maybe he's busy with work... It's also possible that the News Coos messed up."

- Meaning: "They'll take a while, those letters. They'll get here before long, Bonney."

- Meaning: "Ara. Newspaper and... ...A letter."

6a. CP8 Agent telling Alpha how many letters Kuma has sent:
- TCB Scans: HE'S SENDING AROUND 10 A MONTH... SO THAT'SA FAIR FEW...
- Original:【月に．．．１０通ペースもう何十通か】
- Meaning: "In a month... the pace's about 10 letters. It's up to dozens now."
- Comment: wordplay pun by Oda. The phrase "dozens of letters" in Japanese contains the word "10 letters."

6b. Panel with Alpha holding Bonney's letter:
- TCB Scans: HOW'S HE EVEN FINDING SO MUCH TO WRITE ABOUT? "TO BONNEY!♡" UGH... HOW MUSHY CAN YOU GET!?
- Original:【よく書く事があるわねボニーへ♡くっだらねェ！！】
- Meaning: "You wrote so much to Bonney, didn't you♡? How worthless!!"
- Comment: Wordplay with depiction. First part「よく書く事があるわね」means, "You wrote quite a lot, didn't you" and second part「ボニーへ♡」means "Dear Bonney♡" or "To Bonney♡." Together, coupled with the drawing, Alpha is saying her sentence, "You wrote so much to Bonney, didn't you♡?" while reading what's written on the letter cover.

6c. Part of Kuma's letter:
- TCB Scans: YOU'RE PROBABLY SICK OF ME SAYING THIS, BUT...
- Original:【何度も言うが】
- Meaning: "I'll say it over and over again,"

6d. GyoGyo last panel:
- TCB Scans: AGAIN? C'MON, BONNEY, HOW ABOUT SOME JENGA INSTEAD?
- Original:【またかよボニー「ジェンガ」は！？】
- Meaning: "Again, Bonney? What about the Jenga!?"

- Meaning: "Your head's also become more shapely♡"
- Comment: More punny wordplay. Above is the direct translation. The target translation should be "Your head's also more clear♡" "Clear" as in "refreshingly" or "with a feeling of relief" or "(a weight) off one's shoulder"

8b. Vegapunk right after:
- TCB Scans: PE PE PE! I FEEL LIGHT AS A FEATHER!
- Original:【ペペペペ飛べそうなくらい体が軽い】
- Meaning: "Pe pe pe pe! My body feels so light that I could fly."

8c. Stussy's question:
- TCB Scans: I WONDER WHICH OF US HAS THE MOST CHECKERED FATE... THE HUMAN THAT LACKS FREE WILL OR THE CLONE THAT DOESN'T
- Original:【自我がない「人間」と自我のある「複製人間（クローン）」ど知らが不幸かしら】
- Meaning: "I wonder who's more unfortunate, a "Human" without sense of self or a "Clone" with it."
- Comment: like last week,「自我」means [sense of] self and will recur in the next few dialogue. Understandably, there will be inconsistencies in translation, ranging from "free will" to "personality" to "sense of individuality" and so on. Stephen Paul opted for "free will" in the official release.

8d. Middle panel Kuma:
- TCB Scans: WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD I EXPECT... ...WHEN MY PERSONALITY IS ERASED?
- Original:【．．．．．．．．．自我を失うとはどうなる事だ？ベガパンク】
- Meaning: "What would it be like to have your [sense of] self erased, Vegapunk?"

8e. Vegapunk's response:
- TCB Scans: I'LL PUT IT LIKE THIS... YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BEING TOTALLY OBEDIENT... ...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE ASKED TO KILL A CHILD? WHAT IT MEANS IS... "The loss of self" in this research refers to, as a living human, losing memories and emotion. However, I will try to preserve a minimum level of consciousness right before the point of completion!! We have about one more year...
- Comment: this time, the word「意識」"consciousness" is thrown into the mix.

9a. Kuma first panel:

- Meaning: "As long as there's time, I'll continue telling Bonney that I love her. I plan to write down a lifetime's worth of feelings in a year."

9b. Kuma's birthday letter to Bonney:
- TCB Scans: I don't know when you'll get this letter, but... Happy Birthday, Bonney! I'm back at Vegapunk's lab. Things are busy around hereー
- Original:【この手紙がいつ届くかわからないが．．．ボニー９歳の誕生日おめでとう！！私は今ベガパンクの研究所でーー】
- Meaning: "I don't know when you'll get this letter, but... Happy 9th Birthday, Bonney! At the moment, I'm at Vegapunk's labーー"
- Comment: I should have pointed this out much earlier, as much earlier as 2 chapters ago, but Kuma's speech pattern changes when talking to Bonney. With Bonney, he refers to himself using "watashi"「私」, the formal modern way of saying "I," but else, he uses "ore"「おれ」which is informal and used by guys.



10. Page 10:

nothing to comment on, except Bonney sad and therefore, sad.



11. Page 11:

11a. RA member's dialogue above Sabo's head:
- TCB Scans: YEAH, IT'S JUST LIKE ALL THOSE OTHER TIMES. THE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES WERE ON THE ROPES... THEN HE SWOOPED IN TO SAVE US AT THE LAST MINUTE. AFTER THAT, HE LEFT WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!!
- Original:【ーーええ危ない所革命軍手助けを！！しかしまた何も言わず去って行かれました！！】
- Meaning: "ーーYes, he helped the RA when we were in danger!! But he left without saying a word again!!"

11b. Dragon's reply:
- TCB Scans: IF KUMA WISHES NOT TO BE FOLLOWED, WE HAVE TO RESPECT THAT. I'M SURE HE HAS HIS REASONS... ...FOR KEEPING US IN THE DARK.

12a. Connie top left panel:
- TCB Scans: THEY LET IT SLIP WHILE THEY WERE GETTING DRINKS IN TOWN. APPARENTLY, YOUR DISEASE HAS BEEN CURED FOR A WHILE NOW.
- Original:【町で飲んだくれて話してたらしいあんたの病気はもうすっかり治ってるって】
- Meaning: "It seems that let it slip when they were heavily dru*k in town. They said your illness had been completely cured."

12b. Connie (cont'd):
- TCB Scans: WE MUST BE MISSING SOMETHING... WHY WOULD THEY KEEP A PERFECTLY HEALTHY YOUNG GIRL TRAPPED INSIDE FOR ANOTHER SIX MONTHS? ALSO, I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT KUMA WOULDN'T SEND A SINGLE LETTER.

- Meaning: "I don't know whether there are any hidden circumstances or not, but placing a healthy you under house arrest for another 6 months is strange! It's also strange that Kuma hasn't even sent one letter, isn't it?"

12c. Connie's flashback model dialogue:
- TCB Scans: GYOGYO AND THE REST AREN'T YOUR AVERAGE FISHERMEN!! THEY'RE A STRONG PACK OF HOOLIGANS... I'M SURE THE PIRATES AND SEA BEASTS WILL TURN TAIL ONCE THEY SEE THEM IN ACTION!! THEY'LL BE THERE TO HELP YOU FIND KUMA!!

13a. Bonney's thoughts while discovering the great outdoors:

- Comment: the word「楽」, aside from easy, can also mean pleasant and fun, considering the full-body binding context and Alpha's BDSM sad1st undertones.

14c. GyoGyo:
- TCB Scans: SHE'S FLYING TOWARDS US!! THAT'S ONE OF THE SIX POWERS!!
- Original:【飛んで来たぞ！！政府の戦闘術「六式」だ！！】
- Meaning: "She's flying towards us!! That's the government's battle technique, the Rokushiki!!"

14d. Kuma bottom panel explaining Nika:
- TCB Scans: BUT THEY SAY HIS BODY WAS ALL RUBBERY... AND THERE WAS NO LIMIT TO WHAT HE COULD DO IN A FIGHT...
- Original:【その体はゴムの様な性質を持ち空想のままに戦ったそうだ．．．】
- Meaning: It's said that he has a body with properties like rubber, and that he fights according to his imagination...

14-15d. Bonney's move name:

- Meaning: "The escape of Bonney the "hostage" immediately became known to the "World Government." The vessel "Search for My Father Fishing Boat" eventually stood alongside that of Luffy's and the others', transforming into a "Pirate Ship" of the new eraーー"
- Comment: Another wordplay by Oda in the name of Bonney's vessel, the "Search for My Father Fishing Boat." The word for "to search" in the general sense is usually written using the Kanji「探す」. However, Oda uses the homophonic Kanji for the same word「捜す」which also means "to search," but, with added meanings of, "to search for something/someone missing" and "to fish around for." Both are read as "sagasu"
