  1. "What happened here?" Isabeau says, holding her court dress as to not stumble as she runs to the scene.
  2. Hélène does not turn around. "A hunter of the church," she says, "or one of their informants. He asked too many questions."
  3. The light coming from the castle's party barely reaches this corner of the garden. The body of a man is barely perceptible to the human eye, save for a few dim highlights on his silhouetto, suggesting a neck bent at an unnatural angle.
  4.
  5. Isabeau slows down as she closes in. She takes in the scene - a man she recognizes as a guest of tonight's events, lying dead on the ground - and Hélène standing here, still as a statue. Isabeau notices her breath is short... and that a crossbow bolt is lodged into her chest. "Are you alright?"
  6.
  7. "They nearly got my heart. But they didn't, I'm fine." Hélène spits blood. "Hungry, though."
  8. All the while, Hélène did not take her eyes off the man on the ground. There is an animalistic glint in her pupils, a look Isabeau knows all too well from the years they have spent together. She puts a hand on her shoulder, and give her a firm shake: "Go back to your room. I'll have it dealt with."
  9.
  10. Hélène"s eyes flicker back to normal for an instant, before turning back feral with a scowl: "I said, I'm hungry!" She tries to pull off Isabeau's hand, to no avail. "You don't know what it's like, to be hungry! I'm so weak. You're stronger than I am now. I wouldn't have let that kind of insect any chance at hurting me, in my days!" She rips off the bolt in her chest, and throws it in the thicket.
  11.
  12. Isabeau twists Hélène to face her. She holds her head with her hands, and stare deep into her eyes. "You brought this upon yourself! When you came here, you were the most fearsome vampire of this part of the world; and yet, you were groveling in tears at my gate, begging for an end to your torment." Hélène grows pale at the memory. "Remember all these years of abstention and pain. Remember these bouts of relapse and the agony of their repercussions!"
  13. Isabeau realizes she was squeezing hard on Hélènes cheeks, and relaxes. She rests her forehead against Hélène's. "Don't go back now. It's only a few more years... You're nearly there, I know it. Then all this pain will be behind you, forever."
  14.
  15. Tears start streaming down Hélène's face. Pain? Frustration? Fear? She couldn't say herself what prompted them. She falls to her knees. "Maybe I should have stayed in the dungeon", she says. "I don't know if I can trust myself to the end."
  16. "Staying in that prison would only have destroyed your mind. You're a strong will, Hélène, and that's all you'll need to carry on." She puts her mantle on Hélène's back and escorts her back to the castle. In silence, hands pull away the dead body into the thicket, and soon enough nothing but the lively chatter of the remote party fill the silence of the night.
