- I knew the Interpreter was as keen to find out what was in the Princess's barrels as I was. We took an opportunity to steal down one evening when there were few servants about; so few, we did not even need all the bribes we had brought.
- I poured some of the liquid from a barrel into a stone dish and sniffed. It was sweet, so very sweet; and I held it out to the Interpreter. 'Peaches,' she said. 'Peaches from Cathay.'
- I did not sleep that night. I felt alert, full of energy and life.
