  1. Endocrinology always struck me as an interesting medical field, one I could eventually pursue. One of the first things that attracted me the most about this specialty was how broad it was. Unlike other specialties which focus on a particular organ or system, Endocrinology provided me with a much broader group of cases to study. Also, I was constantly forced to study "outside" that organ/target area, in order to understand the systemic implications of a focal pathology point. This broad, integrated and physiological teaching inspired me greatly, and motivated me to keep studying about diverse pathologies. I have a particular interest for Diabetic Neuropathy – indeed I am taking part on a laboratorial research concerning the implications of this disease on the spinal cord.

  3. Furthermore, this medical field demands both memorization and complex logic thinking. I cannot stress out how rewarding it is for me to be able to truly understand (and not simply memorize) what is happening with the patient, and how our pharmacologic or surgical intervention might be of use. I took true pleasure in learning, mostly because I was not just memorizing what an author had written or a teacher had said. I was actively thinking, actively pursuing a deeper understanding of each scenario, and true understanding is the key for long-lasting knowledge.

  5. All-in-all, Endocrinology is a specialty which captivates me both for its broad spectrum of action, but also for the heavy logical thinking it requires. I feel the specialties where true understanding is needed are also those which are more rewarding on the physician-to-doctor interaction.
