Insistence
'He knows I am ordained in a religious order, and though he seems to have no belief himself, he must respect the vows of others...'

I came to realise that the Emissary had no interest in me for myself. He cared only for what I could offer in the way of assistance, information, and, most alarmingly, loyalty. He would isolate me, knowing that the Khan trusted me, and question me about my experiences here. In that high-pitched voice, the questions sounded menacing. More than perhaps they actually were. He returned again and again to the topic of storytelling.
