- Gabriel James (born March 3, 1974) is an American painter and installation artist, associated with the contemporary art movement. He is most known for his melted liquid painting style, in which he melts glass and metals and pours them onto alternative canvases in lieu of paint. He lives and works in New York City and is a member of the Alphabet City Art Collective.

-
Early Life

- James was born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico to overly religious and conservative parents. In an interview in 2013, James said "if it wasn't for Georgie, my sister, I don't think I would have made it out of there alive; she never did." His close bond with his sister is reflected in many of his works.

- He has a degree in Fine Art from the University of New Mexico. After college, he believed that the only use he would get out of his degree would be from appraising the items that came into his family's antique store.

-
Works

-

- James first came onto the New York art scene in 2009 after applying for a contest hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The winner of the contest would have their piece installed as a permanent fixture at the MET. His piece, Freedom from the Bars beat out thousands of artists who applied across the country for this honor.

- Freedom from the Bars

- This immersive art installation piece is six feet wide by eight feet long, and appears to be a cage covered in a reflective coating. Upon closer inspection, each bar has stripes of small rainbows painted. The bars are malleable, and when a person steps inside the cage, the inside of the bars are painted black with light colored stars, while the ceiling has tally marks in different colors, indicating the number of days James served time in person for a crime he didn't commit. "This is a piece that I made for myself, as proof that I really was on the outside."

- String of Fate

- A rare sculpture piece from James, he considers it more installation piece than sculpture. Unveiled in late February of 2020, this piece will likely become one of the pieces James is most known for. String of Fate is two hands made to look like they're balancing on red string.

- One hand is made of white glass and the other hand is made of black glass. The black hand holds the white hand, forming imagery of yin and yang. The white hand has a cut in the middle and red string poured out of it like blood. The string wrapped around both hands and the string twisted around and around in circles forming a stand. It will be on display at the MET beginning summer of 2020.

- The Mythology of Muse series

- Currently this series consists of six pieces.

- Narcissus is the most well-known of the pieces. It consists of liquefied glass poured and painted onto wood. It features a naked woman seen only from behind stepping into a pool of water. In interviews James has said that the woman in the painting is modeled after his ex-wife. It is currently on display at New York University.

- Ares is dyed ash painted onto an acid washed canvas. It features man, seen only from behind, stepping into flames. The assumption has always been that the model for Ares is Manhattan District Attorney, Jonathan Michaels, but this has never been confirmed. This piece was bought privately by a collector and is rarely on display.

- Aphrodite is different shades of lipstick painted on top of a faded out mirror. Like the other pieces in the series, it's painted from behind, but the woman is twisting so the swell of one of her breasts was showing. She is stepping onto the petal of a flower. James has said the muse for the piece was one of his few female lovers. It is currently on display at the Museum of the Goddess.

- Apollo & Artemis is melted crayon painted onto an aged child-sized easel. It is two people merged together like the original Greek interpretation of soulmates. The male half is painted out of a rainbow of different crayons melted down. The female half is painted out of different shades of blue crayons. They are stepping into the woods, and their faces are turned to reveal the outline of their faces. Though it has never been confirmed, it is assumed the painting is about himself and his sister Georgie. This piece is currently not on display and is rumored to be part of James's private collection.

- Zeus & Hera was created using foundation make-up. James said he found every type he could and mixed them together until they were a consistency he wanted. This is the only one of the pieces that is not made up of naked bodies. It is the bust of a man and a woman staring at each other painted onto reclaimed wood. The man's head is split open and pieces of records are coming out of the top. The woman's mouth is covered with duct tape. This piece was bought privately by a collector and is rarely on display.

- Hades & Persephone is glass painted into wood. The subjects are two men, seen only from behind from the waist up. They’re holding hands, but their hands are burnt. One is fire and ash while the other man is water with water lilies. The men balance each other out: fire and water, seemingly very different but necessary to the other to stay in check. Their bodies are tilted away from each other, but their heads are bent towards each other. With the allusions towards Ares, it is assumed that this piece represents James' husband and James himself.

- Trees of Passion series

- A series of installation pieces designed to look like trees.

- Family Tree is sculpted out of clay and metal and consists of busts and limbs of James's family members as the trunk.

- Lustful Leaves is a metal sculpture of a tree with dildos hanging from the branches instead of leaves.

-
Personal Life

- James has two daughters from his first marriage, one of whom is actress, Cordelia James, who James laughingly said in an interview is named after the character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

- In 2002, He was arrested and convicted for the murder of his younger sister, Georgiana, who he's often referred to as his soulmate. He served 6 years of a twenty-five year sentence before being exonerated and suing the states of New Mexico and California for wrongful imprisonment. He has been associated with the criminal organization, The Saviors, and while he has admitted to being a member while he was incarcerated, but has publicly stated that he's no longer a part of that world.

- Throughout the course of his second trial he fell in love with his lawyer, now Manhattan District Attorney, Jonathan Michaels. In 2008 they were one of the couples married in California during the brief period of time the state was issuing marriage licences to same sex couples. They separated in 2017. They reunited in March of 2020.

- In February of 2020, it was announced that Gabriel James will be the artist in residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the 2020 summer season.

- Growing up Gabriel James liked to joke that even though his birthday was March 3, 1974, he was born the day his little sister, Georgiana James was born. The second that little girl was put into his chubby three year old arms Gabriel knew that his new job in life was to take care of his little sister. He was pretty sure that his sister agreed with this arrangement. From the moment that Georgie was brought home from the hospital, she and Gabriel were inseparable. Whenever Gabriel wasn’t in the room, nothing would soothe her until her brother was back. It was strange, but even as an infant his sister knew that their parents couldn’t be trusted. It was Gabriel and Georgie against the world, and nothing was going to tear them apart.

- As they grew up, they lived in each other pockets. They were each other’s best friend, an extension of the other. Sure, they had other friends, and there were times when they didn’t necessarily want to be around the other, but as far as they were concerned, they were each other’s family. Their parents occasionally worried about their codependency, and occasionally tried to separate them, but nothing they did ever worked. Georgie and Gabriel took care of each other. They knew their parents were strict, and they knew their parents had very conservative beliefs and opinions. As much as they knew they were supposed to love their parents, it was hard to do so when their parents saw them more as accessories and a societal expectation than little people they were supposed to love and adore.

- From a young age, it was pretty clear to Francis James that his son was different than he had been at that age. Sure, he thought drawing was too girly of a hobby for his son, and once broke his wrist so he couldn’t draw for three months, but it didn’t get really bad until the third grade. It probably all started with his crush on Burt Reynolds. He doesn’t know why Burt Reynolds, but he remembers watching Smokey and the Bandit and totally understanding what Sally Fields would run off with a man she barely knew. From there he tended to be hyper aware of the fact that he was attracted to guys. Sure, he’d find the occasional female pretty, but it was almost always guys. He didn’t see anything wrong with it until the summer he was eight years old, and his father interrupted his first kiss at the pool, with another boy. His father beat him so severely that if his younger sister hadn’t found him laying out back, he probably would have died. From that point forward, Gabriel knew he needed to keep his private life private. He knew that if his father caught him with another boy, he probably would kill him.

- As he got older, Georgie was the only person who knew that Gabriel was gay, and they both worked their asses off to hide his sexuality from their parents. So, he kept it hidden and did what was expected of him as the only male son. He played varsity baseball all through high school, and when he was sixteen, he got himself a girlfriend, Nancy. She was head over heels in love with him, but Gabriel just saw her as his best friend in the world. She understood him in the same way that his sister did, except she didn't know he was gay, and why would she? Gabriel was not the first gay man in the world to play straight to fit in, and, God, did he play the role to the best of his ability. He must have been damn good at playing the role because he and Nancy stayed together all through high school and got married right out of high school.

- He got a full ride to the University of New Mexico to play baseball. His father wanted him to get a hospitality or business management degree, and he did, but he also took as many art classes as he could get away with. He knew his father would flip if Gabriel got a minor in fine art, or even worse -- double-majored in fine art. So, he hid it from him. He managed his classes enough to double-major, even though it meant little to no sleep and added work between projects and baseball season, but he couldn’t help himself. College was supposed to be the one place where he could be himself, his true self. And if he wound up being a fifth-year senior? Well, he did have a wife and baby a couple of hours away.

- Through college, his wife stayed in Roswell, living with his parents and working in his family's antique shop. During the week, he studied at school and fell into the underground gay scene. No one knew him there, and being away from his family and wife during the week meant he could try his hand at sleeping around and dating men. He felt so much like himself at school that going back home always was a culture shock to him, and not in a good way. During the weekends, he played the role of doting husband and perfect son. By his junior year of college, he realized he couldn’t stay on campus anymore and with his parents help, bought a house with Nancy. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as she realized she was pregnant his first senior year. Nancy became a housewife and gave birth to their daughter, Delilah.

- His wife knew how much he loved art, and understood why he wanted the second major. She knew he’d never go back if he didn’t do it now. Besides, she was pragmatic and knew he’d use it to do something like redesign the store’s logo and find a way to explain his love of art away.

- Once he finished college he took over the store, and a year after graduating, they welcomed their second child, Cordelia. It wasn’t the life he imagined for himself, but he was happy, more or less. He loved his kids, and his wife was his best friend. His life could be worse. Sure, he still went on business trips and hooked up with men at various gay bars, but that wasn't out of the ordinary, at least not then. And it was a life he was willing to put up with - a life that would make his family happy, even if he wasn't entirely happy himself.

- When he was twenty-eight years old, he got a call in the middle of the night from his sister's husband - Georgie never came home from work and could he check and see if she crashed at Gabe and Nancy’s place? His wife wasn’t in bed, which wasn’t unusual - she suffered from insomnia from time to time. When he walked downstairs, he found Georgie’s body out on the patio and his wife chain-smoking next to it. Gabe flipped out. His wife had killed his sister, and he lost it. He blacked out, but apparently he strangled Nancy, stopping only when Delilah appeared, woken up by his and Nancy’s screaming at each other. He let his wife go, her gasping for air the only sign she was fine.

- Delilah was the one who called 9-1-1. When the cops arrived, they saw the body and the bruises around Nancy’s neck and immediately arrested Gabe. He didn’t fight them on it. He may not have been the one who killed his sister, but he was responsible for her death. He didn’t protect her, and his wife killed her. In sickness and in health, any murder his wife committed was his fault, and he knew that if his wife was arrested, his parents would fight him for the kids and after what he did to Nancy, they’d get it. So, the next morning, Gabe confessed to his sister’s murder and his wife’s physical assault. His kids deserved to have one parent with them. After a brief discussion with the DA, he was charged with second degree murder and sentenced to 25 to life with the possibility of parole after 15. It wasn't a bad deal and he took it. He was only 28 when he went in. Even if he served 25 years, he'd still have plenty of life left.

- His sister's death haunted him every day. Even though he wasn't the one who killed her, he felt responsible for his sister's death. That was part of the reason he confessed to the murder. This was his penance for his sister's death, and he didn't mind serving his penance in jail. Then two very important things happened. First, Nancy sent him divorce papers along with a note letting him know he was never going to see his kids again. Sure, she included their last school pictures, but it hurt. He went to jail for her, for their family and she'd used him. Used him to get away with killing his best friend, his sister. Then a gang tried to jump him in. Still reeling from his divorce papers, he freaked out when he was cornered. He took a piece of piping and bashed his attacker's head in until it was nothing but a pulpy mess. He didn't know what was on his face, but no one ratted on him. And that was how he accidentally inherited a prison gang.

- For someone who up until this point in his life had never really broken the law, Gabriel fell into prison life pretty easily. He kept to himself for the most part, but found that there was always someone else with him, even when he wanted to be alone. His incident with the pipe had spread through the prison like wildfire, and while no one would actually tell any of the wardens what happened - everyone knew what he'd done. Weaker guys hung around him, desperate for protection while stronger guys needed someone to tell them what to do. So, Gabe wound up with a small following, running drugs and alcohol through the prison. Not everything went smoothly. Every now and then someone new would try the old "try to take on the toughest guy" prison trick, and Gabe would wind up beating them senseless. A couple of times he stabbed guys who thought they could overrun him and his crew. Sure, he wound up getting shanked a time or two, but he always came up on top. He figured that he was going to be in jail for a long time. He might as well live comfortably and being at the top of the food chain? That was definitely comfort.

- Then his cousin, Dustin, got involved. Dustin had always been more like a younger brother or even like a son to him than cousin. He'd been dealing with his own problems, but when he found out what Gabe had confessed to doing, he was determined to get Gabe out of prison. The first thing he did was petitioned to get Gabe relocated to a jail closer to him in California, where he'd moved after high school. Once Gabe was transferred to the North County Correctional Facility in Southern California, he started reaching out to lawyers who specialized in reopening cases and getting innocent men out of jail. And that was how Gabe met Jonathan Michaels. Johnny was a lawyer from New York who was trying to make a name for himself. He was in California working out of the West Coast branch of Wyatt & Matthews, where Dustin's best friend, Charlie, was doing his internship. It took some begging and arranging on Dusty's part, but finally Johnny drove out to the North County Correctional Facility to meet him.

- Gabriel didn't want his case reopened. He was fine serving his penance for not protecting his sister, but Johnny saw something, whether it was in Gabriel or in Dusty, and kept coming back every week until Gabriel let him reopen the case. In the beginning, Gabriel didn't trust him, and had no desire to talk to him. Until the other man brought him art supplies one visit. He'd lost his writing privileges after he stabbed another inmate with a pen. Gabe had borrowed one of Johnny's pens and paper on a previous visit to sketch him, and Johnny quickly realized that the easiest way to get him to talk was to give him something to draw with. Soon every time Johnny came by he had some kind of art supply for Gabriel to play with during their conversations. After awhile Gabe forgot why he didn't want Johnny visiting in the first place. It took over a year, but Johnny finally wore Gabe down and they went to trial.

- Right before the trial started, California had started issuing same sex marriage licences. For reasons Gabriel didn't understand, Johnny talked a judge into granting him a day pass so they could get married. He claimed it was to strengthen the validity of him opening Gabe's case, that he was doing it for love and not for what it would do for his career if he won. Gabe saw through him. He'd visited him twice a month for a year, and called him during the weeks he didn't visit. Johnny had fallen in love with him, and Gabe had fallen right back. So, running off with his lawyer to get married? It was probably one of the most romantic things he'd ever done. Not even a month after they got married California stopped issuing marriage licences to same sex couples. Gabriel always saw it as a sign that they were meant to be married.

- Gabe's trial went surprisingly smooth. Johnny had evidence placing Gabe at a gay bar at the time of his sister's murder, and had done research that the cops before hadn't bothered to look for. The other side tried to argue that he'd confessed, but ultimately Gabriel walked free -- after serving seven years for a crime he never committed. It was overwhelming, but he did his best to readjust to civilian life.

- After they won their case and after the trial, Gabriel wasn't sure where they were going to stand. Despite being in love with each other, they had never really talked about post-prison life. It was almost too much to even day dream about. So when it actually happened, they weren't prepared, and Gabe had it in his head that Johnny was going to leave - that he'd gotten his win and that maybe their marriage wasn't valid. He didn't know why he even worried about it. All same-sex marriages during that time were still held up, and Johnny loved him regardless of whether or not he was behind bars. Not having anything to stay for on the West Coast, he moved with his husband to New York.
-

- His adjustment to the East Coast was a little difficult, but Johnny made a point to make sure that Gabriel was taken care of. He introduced him to the right people, and encouraged him to focus on his art. Johnny actually preferred Gabe pursuing his passions instead of getting a meaningless job, which was something Gabe had never experienced. They both knew that despite being cleared of charges getting a job would be hard for Gabe, and besides, they didn't need the money. They had counter-sued the states of California and New Mexico for wrongful imprisonment, and Gabe had walked away from that courtroom with a small fortune. It probably also helped Johnny was from a very wealthy family. It wasn't like he actually needed to work, and his husband didn't mind the idea of Gabe being his stay-at-home partner. And Gabriel found that after years of pretending to be someone he wasn't followed by the years in jail, he was more than okay with letting someone else take the reigns of his life.

- He finally was in a place he wanted to be. His art career was taking off, Johnny's career had led him to the DA's office, their relationship was stronger than ever, and then his daughter, Cordelia, showed up on her sixteenth birthday. She'd figured out that her mother and grandparents had been lying to her, and had sought him out. They'd been talking for months, but he never imagined that his daughter would come looking for him and want to live with him. He honestly couldn't remember the last time he'd been so happy. He took her in and got to watch as his daughter graduated from Julliard, and then had her own child at 19. It's a little strange being a grandfather so young, but he loves Bella just as much as he loves Bella and both those girls are his whole world.

- He and Johnny broke up not too long after his granddaughter's birth. They'd known each other for eleven years and been together for ten of those years, but Gabe had made friends with a woman named Jillynn Rhodes. Dusty introduced them, and Gabe suddenly found himself inspired. He was constantly drawing the woman, and making up excuses to be around her for inspiration. Never really finding himself attracted to women before, Gabe assumed she was just his muse and that all he wanted was friendship from her. Johnny saw something that Gabe hadn't been able to see. Johnny understood that Gabe was loyal and was going to be stubborn about staying with him, so he left so Gabe could pursue Jill. Of course, he offered Gabe an ultimatum to choose between them, but ultimately they separated and after about a year divorced.

- It was the first time in Gabe's entire life that he wasn't in a relationship. There had been a brief period of time in prison between Nancy and Johnny, but Gabe was too messed up to consider the fact that he was single. So, despite knowing how smitten he was with Jill, he spent a year figuring out who he was. He started working on mending the relationship he had with Delilah, and focused on his art. Even though he said he wasn't free daycare, he started taking care of his grandbabe more often than not. He finally figured out who he was, and when he and Jill finally fell into bed together and then finally admitted that it was more than just sex, well, his life felt pretty damn perfect. The problem with Gabe though is that he's more of a dreamer than a pragmatist. Their relationship moved fast as hell going as far into an engagement before fizzling out just as quickly.

- While planning their wedding and in trying to figure out their future together, Gabriel realized that it wasn't the life he wanted. He'd used the time after his separation from Johnny to find himself, but it wasn't until he was looking at a future with someone else that he truly realized how f***ing in love he still was with his ex-husband. Two years later and he still couldn't move out of the borough they'd lived in together. He had his name in his phone as Do Not Answer because he knew what talking to the other man would still do to him. F***, he'd never even removed the other man's name from his skin. He was just treading water as he tried to figure out who he was as a person without his husband. The thing was... he never needed to marry someone else - he just needed to figure out who he was before he could work on his marriage with Johnny.

- No one was surprised that not long after ending his engagement to Jill, he and Johnny got back together. It was strange how easy it was for them to pick up where they left off. Sure, they still have their issues to work through - and hell do they have a lot of them, but lack of love has never been their issues. The thing that pissed Gabe the f*** off and almost ended their reunion was the little not well-known fact that Johnny NEVER filed the divorce papers. Throughout Gabe's entire relationship and engagement to someone else, they were still LEGALLY MARRIED. To say Gabriel was pissed off was putting it mildly, but when his husband asked him if he wanted him to turn in the papers, Gabriel's answer was an immediate no. Angry with him or not, he's still his husband and they're still technically legally separated.

- He's in marriage counseling with the man he's been married to since 2008, which is not somewhere he ever thought he'd be. And you betcha he's already imagined what a vow renewal and a real wedding as opposed to the courtroom wedding they'd had. Is that something he'd ever admit to the other man? Hell to the f***ing no. They're not there yet, but they will be. He knows it. Currently he's living in Queens with more animals than what he knows to do with, one of his installations is on permanent exhibit at the Met, and he's happy for the first time in his life. He still misses his sister every day, and he still lives with the fallout from what he did when he was in jail, but he's living his truth every day.
