- my take on this as someone who arguably would've benefitted from not sharing my fmc knowledge in 2022-2024;
- if your goal is to get a record of some kind, hiding info like this is strategically smart. if your goal is to be as good as you can possibly be, having outside perspectives can massively help with refining and improving whatever you happened to discover. also, if someone else independently discovers the same thing you did and then decides to share, they're likely going to get major credit in terms of what the technique ends up being named (womp womp)
- moving away from strategy and into a more psychological angle;
- one of my strongly held beliefs is that people who gatekeep in this manner take a much bigger negative mentality hit than those who just share what they figured out. i believe this happens because your subconscious more or less interprets your actions as "i can't get a legitimate record *unless* i use this hidden unfair advantage"
- it's no wonder to me why a lot of these cubers have at most 5 years in the WCA game before crashing out and quitting basically forever. they struggle to come to terms with the fact that they had to work hard developing a resource, only for someone else to consume it and surpass them (so unfair!!!... until you remember that you probably learned to solve most of the wca events from youtube tutorials and stop being an NPD moron for two seconds)
- that's why my attitude towards this stuff has always been one of willingness to share, because i'm confident in my ability to outplace people on skill alone (not that i always care(d) about that). sounds like a much healthier AND cooler mentality imo
