Black Coffee

Coffee
Dark black coffee
Acidic and astringent
Black as the night sky shining overhead
And hot as the fire that rages on in the depths of the earth

Coffee
Filled with caffeinated essence
That travels up and down
And down and up
Throughout the body and the mind
Leaving a brief but glorious rush in its wake

I drink the coffee
Black and hot
And as I drink it
The bitterness is overwhelming
And yet, I’m still compelled to drink it
I keep on drinking it
Even if it’s not very tasty
For that glorious calm moment of pause
Followed by the brief rush that comes through

And even though I know I will crash later
At that moment
Drinking the coffee
Everything feels so right
