Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater

- A Russian scientist named Sokolov sought asylum to the west. He was a famous rocket scientist, and the man mainly responsible for the first rocket sent into space, who then became the head of a design bureau.
- He seemed to be "afraid" of his own creations, and sought asylum. The US succeeded in rescuing him and his family. The man giving the briefing was the one conducting the operation.
- Soon afterwards, President Kennedy found out about the Soviets building up missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy tried to request the Soviet to back out the missiles, but they refused, risking the start of a nuclear war. Eventually, the Soviets did agree and pull out, after the President agreed to a deal. The public cover story is that the US would have to dismantle their IRBMs in Turkey, but they were actually obsolete and would have been removed anyway as they had no strategic value to either side. The actual deal was that the US would have to return Sokolov. They were running out of time, so they returned Sokolov. He must have been working on a big weapon.

- Jack's mission is to rescue Sokolov before the weapon is complete. His codename is Naked Snake. The man giving the briefing will be codenamed as Major Tom. Support team includes Para-Medic in charge of his health, and The Boss. The Boss is a legendary mercenary and was Snake's mentor. She left him five years ago, due to a top secret mission.
- The Boss pointed out that a soldier must be strong in body, spirit, and technique. She taught him everything about technique, but he has to develop his spirit on his own. She also warns him against having personal feelings, since a soldier's objectives depend on politics, which changes with the time. Snake is looking for a reason to fight, but this conscience might hold him back. He's willing to die for the leader, whoever is in charge, but the Boss points out that even the leaders change with time, based on the values of the current times. Enemies and allies all change with the times. The only thing a soldier can believe in is the mission.
- The Boss put up a Cobra Unit back in WWII, who put the war into an end.

- Snake finds Sokolov, who was burning some papers and feared that Snake was one of "Volgin's men". Snake explained that he's a CIA agent here to rescue him. He passes a message from Major Zero (Major "Tom"): "Sorry for being so late", which Sokolov finds reassuring as it indicates that Major Zero is a man of his word.
- Sokolov tells Snake about the internal conflict in Russia. Khrushchev was trying to maintain peaceful coexistence with the west, despite heavy opposition. However, the failure of his agricultural policies kept him in a bad spot. President Kennedy's assassination was also a huge blow, since Khrushchev lost his biggest partner. A group led by Colonel Volgin (known as Thunderbolt in US) of GRU plans to overthrow Khrushchev and put Brezhnev and Kosygin in his place. Volgin already has control over a secret weapons facility and is now after Sokolov's weapon as well. The guards outside were actually for protecting Sokolov from Volgin.
- Sokolov is impressed by Snake's command of the Russian language, which he learned from The Boss. Sokolov found it frightening, but still seeks to ditch Russia and flee to US and see his family.
- Snake gets Sokolov out, but they're surrounded by Russian (KGB) soldiers. Major Ocelot from the GRU comes in and kills all the KGB soldiers.
- Ocelot initially thought Snake was the boss, but was then disappointed.  He calls in other GRU soldiers, and starts mocking Snake's stance and gun (which the other soldiers laughed at). But Ocelot's gun got jammed, giving Snake the chance to strike and restrain him. Snake was able to take out all the GRU soldiers too. Snake also schooled Ocelot about his technique, noting that he's more suited for a revolver.

- Snake leaves to find Sokolov, who points out a tank in the distance. It's the Shagohad tank that Sokolov was building, capable of firing nuclear IRBMs without requiring friendly support. Sokolov finished Phase One, but it won't be finished until Phase Two. If Volgin gets his hand on it when it's complete, it would trigger World War III.
- As they walk through the suspension bridge, they encounter the Boss, who drops two heavy boxes. Her Cobra Unit appears on a plane, and they retrieve Sokolov, using a swarm of hornets.
- The Boss seems to see a ghost with a hood and glasses behind her and asks "Is he crying?", probably recalling a past memory.
- Volgin arrives and Snake asks Boss what's going on. She explains that she's defecting to the Soviet Union, and that Sokolov was a gift to Volgin. Volgin also takes the boxes, which have recoil-less nuclear warheads.
- Volgin asks about Snake, but Boss says he's too pure for the Cobras. He has not yet found an emotion to carry into battle. She disarms Snake as he falls to the ground.
- Volgin wants to kill Snake since he saw his face, but Boss insists on taking care of Snake herself. She tells Snake he can't come with them, but offers her hand. He takes her hand, but she then throws him off. Snake was able to grab her bandanna as he falls to the river and drifts away.

- Snake treats his injuries and sees several helicopters securing the Shagohad.
- Meanwhile, Volgin is happy about his victory. Ocelot asks about a blonde woman with glasses in the helicopter, who is apparently Sokolov's "woman". Volgin says he'll take her, and stops her from grabbing... some lipstick.
- Volgin then fires one of the nuclear warheads (which Boss gave him) at Sokolov's research facility, despite Ocelot's objections about killing fellow countrymen. Snake observes the nuclear explosion.

- About a week later, in the hospital, Major Zero explains that both he and Snake are being used as scapegoats, that Snake is considered a traitor who assisted The Boss. They do have a chance to make a comeback, however.
- A few days ago (but after the Virtuous Mission), the President gets a call from Khrushchev about how Sokolov's facility was destroyed while there was an American military aircraft nearby. The President explains that The Boss (known as Voyevoda in Russia) defected to Soviet Union, specifically to Volgin, and took the nuclear warheads too. The President insists that America had nothing to do with the incident.
- Khrushchev isn't convinced, especially when he is being pressured to turn against America. He demands that America should prove their innocence, by eliminating The Boss themselves, or else risk a full-scale war. He also insists that America should deal with Volgin as well.

- Snake was chosen for this operation because he was The Boss's last known apprentice.
- The KGB offers minimal support for this operation, such as providing communication lines between Snake and Major Zero. Two NSA codebreakers who defected to the Soviet Union, ADAM and EVA, will also be providing assistance.
- Mission Objectives: Rescue Sokolov, find out what happened to the Shagohad and destroy it, and eliminate The Boss. He also needs to take care of Colonel Volgin to appease Khrushchev and avoid a nuclear exchange. The CIA's priorities, however, are only to rescue Sokolov and destroy the Shagohad.
- Snake needs to meet up with ADAM first. The passwords are "Who are the Patriots?" and "la-li-lu-le-lo".

- Snake finds a horse, and encounters The Boss. She defeats him and dismantles his gun, stating that he would never be able to defeat her. She insists that she remains loyal to her cause till the end, whereas Snake is just following orders. She instructs him to leave and shoots the drone to flames, so that the noise and light would attract Russian soldiers. She notes Snake's bandanna, pointing out that he won't survive if he's held back by the past.

- Snake reaches the research facility, and finds a woman in a motorbike, claiming to be EVA, saying that ADAM couldn't make it. Snake asked "Who are the Patriots?" but she didn't answer. She did shoot a bunch of soldiers that tried to ambush Snake, however.
- EVA explained that Volgin was suspicious of ADAM, but seemed to trust EVA. Snake admires her gun and skill, and she gives him a great gun as well, as well as a scientist disguise, giving him directions to Sokolov's location.
- Snake wanted to leave immediately, but she asks him to rest. Snake tries to refuse, even after EVA said she'd watch him until dawn, but Para-Medic insists that he should rest. While he's asleep, EVA opens a box and seems to be transmitting messages.
- Snake wakes up to find the Ocelot Unit surrounding them. EVA escapes, while Snake deals with the soldiers.
- Ocelot himself captures EVA in her motorbike outfit and holds her at knifepoint, surprised that the spy is female. Ocelot tries to fire at Snake, but his gun is empty, allowing EVA to break free to her motorbike and drive the wheels against Ocelot. Snake comments on Ocelot's revolver and advises him further. Ocelot leaves, while EVA tries to shoot him, but Snake stops her since "he's still young".

- Snake reaches the crevice, but Ocelot was waiting for him, apparently based on what The Boss said. GRU soldiers surround Snake, but Ocelot challenges Snake to a duel.
- After Ocelot loses, the GRU soldiers are about to fire at Snake, when they are swarmed by hornets. Snake jumps into the crevice.
- When Snake nears the exit, he finds The Pain (hornet guy) waiting for him. Snake defeats him and enters the cave.

- Snake enters the research facility and meets Granin, who was the head of a design bureau, developing weapons that were crucial in World War II. Despite his loyalty to Russia, he is upset at how Volgin chose to fund Sokolov over him.
- Granin came up with the idea behind Metal Gear, a tank with legs, saying that it was when humans learned to stand up on their own legs that they were able to revolutionize weaponry.
- He explained that Volgin illegally inherited the "Philosopher's Legacy" from his father, which is a huge sum of money generated from money laundering. However, instead of funding Granin to design Metal Gear, he invested in Sokolov's Shagohad, which Granin was really upset with.
- Granin thanks Snake for complimenting his shoes (given by "Tatyana"), and explains how to break into the fortress of Groznyj Grad, where Sokolov is.

- As Snake leaves, he is ambushed by The Fear. Snake still manages to defeat him, and proceeds.
- Snake heads to the forest, when he gets a call from EVA. EVA seems surprised that Granin was helping him out, but told him that he wouldn't be able to enter the underground tunnel since it's locked. However, EVA has the key to the tunnel, so she tells Snake to meet her at a base in the mountaintop. She also warns him that The End is in the forest, waiting to snipe him.
- The End finds Snake, glad that he finally has the chance to face his prey before he dies of old age. Snake, however, defeats The End.
- Snake makes his way up the really long ladder to the mountain, with the opening song being played in the background.

- Snake meets EVA in the mountaintop. He observes a lot of scars on her back, which she says was from Volgin's sadism. Snake observes a scar in her front that looked much older, however, and inquires as to how she would get such a scar when working as a codebreaker for the NSA, but she doesn't answer.
- EVA gives Snake the key and some instant noodles, and warns him to hurry, since Kruschev is sending units to the area. She told Snake that she has the escape route covered with a ground unit vehicle.
- EVA asks Snake about his relationship with The Boss, which he describes as being like a mother to him. He doesn't have any romantic feelings for her, but it's a very deep bond that goes beyond that.
- EVA also asks Snake about his opinion about herself, which he deflects by asking about her opinion of him. She said she would be ready to fall in love for the mission, and tries to seduce him, when they are interrupted by a loud sound in the distance. She hurries away and leaves on her motorbike.

- Snake uses his binoculars to look out into the distance, finding Volgin punching an oil drum which was leaking blood.
- Granin's corpse eventually fell out, and Ocelot asked Volgin if he learned anything. Volgin said Granin died too early, but he doesn't know whether Granin is the spy who was helping Snake. He does find a transmitter in Granin's shoes, but said that Granin might have been used by the actual spy.
- Ocelot seems furious about Volgin's behavior, killing off Granin without confirming betrayal. He also brings up how Volgin fired the nuclear strike on Sokolov's research facility, despite all the Russians in the area. Volgin says he doesn't care about Ocelot's approval, since he's in command, and that Ocelot just needs to accept that this is war.
- The Boss tells Volgin about how three of her Cobras are down, with only The Fury remaining. She is certain that Snake was sent to destroy the Shagohad, rescue Sokolov, and to eliminate her, so she requests Volgin to tighten the defenses in Groznyj Grad.
- After The Boss and Volgin leave, Ocelot smells the perfume in Tanya, likely realizing that she was the spy in the motorbike that he captured in Rassvet. He twirls The Fury's crossbow and intimidates her, but walks away.

- Snake reaches the underground tunnel and faces The Fury, and defeats him. He then enters Groznyj Grad.
- Snake finds Raikov and captures him, stealing his outfit and wearing the Raiden mask to impersonate Raikov and enter the West Wing.
- In the West Wing, Sokolov gave Tanya some black cylinder. She asks him about the Philosopher's Legacy, but he claims to know nothing even after she threatens him, so she leaves.
- Snake then meets Sokolov, who explains that Phase 2 of the Shagohad is complete. The Shagohad is equipped with rocket boosters that allow it to travel very fast and fire nuclear missiles from far away, enough to strike anywhere in the US. No silos are needed either; just a long runway. It can't be detected by spy planes or satellites, and is essentially a secret mobile fortress.
- Sokolov completed a prototype, but Volgin plans to mass-produce it. He's even planning to ship them to other countries and influence them. The Shagohad will render the concept of deterrence meaningless, ending the Cold War and bringing the world into war.
- Sokolov states that it might be possible to destroy the prototype by planting C3 near the liquid fuel. Snake asks where to get C3, which Sokolov says used to be in the armory before they were stolen by Tatyana.
- Snake thought Tatyana was Sokolov's lover, but Sokolov says she was actually Volgin's lover all along, implying that she seduced Sokolov in order for Volgin to use her to control Sokolov. Sokolov only loves his family, who are in US. Tatyana apparently only arrived a few weeks ago, supposedly sent by Kruschev. Sokolov gave her all the experimental data for the Shagohad.
- Snake still wants to save Sokolov, but Sokolov feels abandoned by Kruschev. Even though his family is in US, Sokolov is confident that he would still be forced to produce weapons of mass murder. Sokolov is tired of being a weapons scientist; all he wanted to do was build space rockets.

- Volgin then enters, while Snake quickly puts on his Raikov disguise. Volgin asks where Major Raikov was, and grabs his crotch (???) to discover that it wasn't Raikov.
- Volgin points a gun at Snake, but decides to shoot Sokolov's legs instead. Snake manages to take the gun and push Volgin to the ground, but then The Boss arrives.
- The Boss defeats Snake and asks what this "fairy disguise" is, saying it would rub off on him and then he would lose sight of who he really is. Volgin tries to point the gun at Snake, but The Boss knocks it off and tells him to stay out of it.
- Volgin says he'll take over from here, when The Boss asks if he'll kill him. He said he will, but only after he tortures him for hurting Ivan. Ocelot enters while The Boss leaves.
