The etiquette of gifts
The Princess was celebrating an anniversary. Her father was hosting a formal dinner. I asked the Interpreter to help me choose an appropriate gift.

'And for birthdays, the imperial family present each other with costly gifts: luxurious furs, jewels and pearls, robes of cloth of gold...'

'Choosing a gift would be easy, were it not for her father,' said the Interpreter. 'He is sure to shower her with presents this evening. Everything that the town has to offer and anything traders have brought through the gates. There is something so sad about this, isn't there? But she does love him, and she will take pity on him. At least for a while longer.'
