  5. Nomenclature notes:
  6. When referencing round, the following adages will be used:
  7. Final Round: NBA Finals or Stanley Cup Final
  8. Round of 4: Semifinals ("Conference Final" will not be used)
  9. Round of 8: Quarterfinals ("Conference Semifinal" will not be used)
  10. Round of 16: Round of 16 ("1st Round" can not be used as postseason in the 70s and earlier had its first round with only 8 or fewer teams)
  11.  
  12. "Round of 16" will be used even in formats where less than 9-15 teams qualified (e.g., 12 teams where only 8 competed in this round while others earned a BYE into the quarterfinals.

  14. Teams 'eliminated' in formats prior to the Round of 16 (e.g., NBA's Play-in Tournament, the 2020 COVID shenanigans) are not considered playoff teams.

  16. Also note: the NHL held no postseason in 2005 due to its season-long lockout of that year. Thus, 2004-05 can not be counted as a season an NBA team and an NHL team were "together". Keep this in mind if you're counting seasons and you think the number shown is off by one. Also assume that if a city has had two teams before and after the 2004-05 season, its not counting that season due to the NHL lockout.

  18. The [Close] tag is used, at least once per city but possibly more, if a city's teams were close to winning both titles in that year. This is relative, as cities with tons of opportunities (Boston) will have several close calls but other locations with limited opportunities (St. Louis) will still have one year tagged as being close.
