- The monster that emerges into the thick of the marines is larger, faster, and louder than anything Becker has seen yet. It swings over the threshold into Lee, pinning him against the far wall with one talon. The sergeant’s PRAE reactive chest plate blows off with a flash, knocking the x-ray backward into the lab.
- Before they can take aim, it smashes into them again, hammering marines with its claws and tail, sending bits of reactive armor flying with each hit. Garcia scrambles to get back from the door, but it grabs her foot and, one-handed, throws her against Leger. The result is like banging flints together to get a spark, and both soldiers cry out as their PRAE plates burst into each other.

- “Shit!” Becker can’t get a clean shot into the fray, and he’s running out of help by the second. Lee shouts in pain as the x-ray picks him up and slams him against the wall, again and again. His back plate comes off on the second hit, and something crunches on the third. Becker hears his rasping cries over the radio, his lungs getting crushed with every slam.
- The creature hooks its talons into his liquid-armor-filled underlayer and yanks in either direction, tearing through plastic and kevlar. Blue gel pours from the embedded packs over Lee’s chest, tangling into copious blond chest hair.
- Fuck me. It’s going straight through armor designed to stop it.
