- (11:45:16 PM) lucidChthonia: ((Depends on the sprite.))
- (11:45:37 PM) lucidChthonia: ((If you grind rep, you might get one around this time. Maybe.))
- (11:45:50 PM) lucidChthonia: ((You'll also be losing your sprite before the three-week mark if you go that route.))
- (11:45:56 PM) lucidChthonia: ((Some people might think of that as a perk, though.))
- (11:46:22 PM) ontologyExpunged: (( We'll hold up on that for juuust a little while. ))

- (11:48:34 PM) lucidChthonia: k
- (11:48:43 PM) lucidChthonia: ((yes, that actually is an IC "k"))
- (11:57:04 PM) ontologyExpunged: A little less than five minutes later, the characteristic light of an appearing return node appears, depositing a slightly panting Dawn on the balcony built and placed for such purposes. Down the stairs, down the ladder, a brief pause to slaughter a few of the odd imp....and she's arrived.
- (11:59:17 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelfrida is waiting, standing against an inside wall, fingers running through a set of worry beads. She straightens on seeing Dawn. "Hi."
- (12:05:28 AM) ontologyExpunged: Dawn's face brightens, smiling. "Hello, Lucid! How are you feeling?"
- (12:07:52 AM) lucidChthonia: Aelf remains tense. "I figure you could tell from my insides, if that matters to you."
- (12:13:57 AM) ontologyExpunged: Dawn pouts. "Well, it's polite to ask, isn't it?"
- (12:16:24 AM) Umel left the room.
- (12:17:28 AM) lucidChthonia: "Anyone who knows me knows that my "polite" doesn't count for an imp's hat." Aelfrida rolls her eyes, walks over to the sofa, sits. "Then again, that's why I'm here."
- (9:51:03 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Fair enough." Dawn cracks her knuckles in a thoroughly useless gesture. "Would you like to watch?"
- (9:52:24 PM) majesticInstability is now known as mislaidLullaby
- (9:53:24 PM) lucidChthonia: "Sure."
- (9:56:11 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Without aplomb, then, Dawn reaches in, the surface of fabric and solid body rippling like water, or perhaps, a Stargate, and the glowing, mostly-pink, ball is retrieved.
- (9:58:04 PM) suggestedNegligence is now known as clockworkWhisperer
- (10:04:08 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelfrida blinks, once, goes back to counting her beads under her breath.
- (10:08:11 PM) clockworkWhisperer is now known as suggestedNegligence
- (10:11:40 PM) ventricularPipefitter: (( Sorry, main chat's also a subplot I've been entangled in. ))
- (10:12:11 PM) lucidChthonia: (('s fine))
- (10:12:27 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Heart has the power to affect memory, yes, but mostly because it is crucially about the power to affect /identity/, and thus, in a sapient being, self-concept. Recall, therefore, and personal experiences, can be a part of its domain.
- (10:18:28 PM) mislaidLullaby left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
- (10:19:28 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Cognitive distortions are particularly common in cases of, say, depression. What may be good or salvageable about a situation is disregarded, discounted as not important, or simply not percieved. All of one's past faults and sins leap orders of magnitude larger in significance.
- (10:21:51 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Ross is fond of explaining exactly what he's doing, and why, as he works. Dawn does so in silence. Briefly, the glowing light source takes on the shape of a control panel, labeled, "Importance of Past Memories."
- (10:24:11 PM) ventricularPipefitter: One meter, with a dial beside it, is labeled, "Positive Memories" It's set low. One, and you can see where this is going, is labled for negative memories, and it's cranked up about as high as it can go. Dawn adjusts these two literal representations of a metaphorical concept, collapses the panel into a ball again, gives it a funny look, and replaces it inside Aelf.
- (10:25:09 PM) lucidChthonia: "So, what exactly was all that about?" prompts Aelfrida.
- (10:27:21 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Left to your own devices, you're seeing nothing but the worst in yourself right now, and disregarding anything positive."
- (10:29:18 PM) lucidChthonia: "I know that much. Why isn't it sticking?"
- (10:34:22 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Dawn looks off into the middle distance, thinking. "Something else about you's running interference." She flicks her eyes back to make eye contact (Dawn is very particular about making sure she's making eye contact when talking with people), and smiles apologetically. "Haven't identified the pattern's nature yet, sorry."
- (10:40:16 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelf frowns-almost, thinking. "Speaking of which... I'll ask again, how do you know all this?"
- (10:42:33 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Know all what?"
- (10:42:52 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Lucid, you've accused me many times of knowing things I have no right to, so you'll have to be more specific."
- (10:44:10 PM) lucidChthonia: "I've had a Heart player in nearly every session of mine since the first. I know what Heart players are usually capable of doing on the first or second or fifth or sixteenth session."
- (10:44:25 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelf captchalogues the beads, puts her hands behind her head.
- (10:45:21 PM) lucidChthonia: "Heart manipulation... you're given the basic ability immediately, or certainly at least early. The vast majority of the Heart player's questlines are centered around how to trigger all the shortcuts and functions."
- (10:45:29 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "I've been working with Ross," Dawn points out. "There's a lot more documentation about how abilities work and how to use them well than there used to be."
- (10:45:52 PM) ventricularPipefitter: (( That would make Heart like Time Travel, wouldn't it? ))
- (10:46:05 PM) lucidChthonia: ((Heh. Somewhat.))
- (10:47:10 PM) lucidChthonia: She repeats her words from earlier. "There is /no/ substitute for hands-on experience. None. Some of them... all I know is you have to unlock certain mental blocks, or you get these ideas placed in your head... I've been keeping track, and some of them are skippable, but by no means all."
- (10:47:46 PM) lucidChthonia: "You're not a Native, I know this. But you're not a greenhorn either."
- (10:48:43 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "I've been questing," Dawn's tone has taken on that characteristic defensive edge you've heard before. She's not making eye contact anymore. "And I've never rolled Heart before."
- (10:53:17 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelfrida makes one fluid movement and steps closer to Dawn, seizing the other woman's chin and holding it straight at arm's length, so that the smaller but equally petite woman was forced to look at her. "Neither have I. But I know just fine what Heart abilities feel like when they're done well, when they're tested, when they're botched."
- (10:53:30 PM) lucidChthonia: "You're hiding something."
- (10:53:40 PM) lucidChthonia: "I'd like to know what."
- (10:58:09 PM) ventricularPipefitter: You'd expect someone to jump, to flinch away from an action like that, from a co-player suddenly reaching out and grabbing your face. Dawn...doesn't. She's still upset, yes. But she doesn't look away when challenged.
- (10:58:28 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "I don't *know*, okay!?"
- (10:58:53 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Is this really so hard to understand?"
- (10:59:34 PM) ventricularPipefitter: If Aelf will let her, she's stood up, and pulled away from the grip.
- (11:00:08 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "I don't appreciate being treated like some sort of puzzle for everyone to understand or problem to fix, you know."
- (11:00:14 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "I'm a /person/."
- (11:01:22 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelf notices, yes. Files it away. Will probably gripe about it later. "It's really a pity I'm not the soulfingers in this session," she comments, and lets the other woman stand up. "There's something very /wrong/ with you, and I'm intensely curious as to what it is, and why."
- (11:02:11 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "There isn't anything wrong with me, and I don't like it when people act like there is."
- (11:03:20 PM) lucidChthonia: "Ah, yes, the good old bias blind spot." Aelf rolls her eyes exaggeratedly, and grabs Dawn's wrist to prevent her from leaving further. "You're not a person at all, are you?
- (11:07:57 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Lightning-quick, a circle of the arm and jerk backwards, and Aelf has no purchase on Dawn again. "How can you /say/ that? How can you say that, to /anyone/?"
- (11:09:09 PM) ventricularPipefitter: Her eyes, in that characteristic silver so unlike her text colour, are flashing with anger. "What are you trying to gain by pissing me off here?"
- (11:15:30 PM) lucidChthonia: Aelf whips around and reflexively draws her wires from her strife deck. "I've got the heart of a Sage, ma'am.. There's a story about you, and I intend on finding out what it is so I can tell it." She transfers both coils to her left hand, briefly examining the right hand that was abraded by Dawn's quick twist. "
- (11:16:29 PM) lucidChthonia: "If I /create/ that story as I'm telling it, so much the better."
- (11:22:59 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Ignoring every objection I have in the matter, then?" Dawn's voice turns scornful. "Well. You're warming to Hope, that's something." Her own posture changes, knees bending, weight to the balls of her feet, arms raised from her sides. If it's a fight, then...
- (11:28:47 PM) lucidChthonia: "What /do/ you remember? Why can't you?" She touches her wrist once, setting the computer there to record video instead of merely transcribing everything to text. There'll need to be an unbiased observer in case her sessionmates come across one survivor, after all.
- (11:28:58 PM) lucidChthonia: "You're a thirteen-year-old fangirl's first Mary Sue. Competent, amnesiac, beautiful, and masterful at deflecting words around yourself." She slips some of the coils to her other hand.
- (11:38:41 PM) ***ventricularPipefitter snorts, at that. "Mary Sue? I'll pretend it's a compliment and not an assertion that I'm too good to be /a/ /person/." She sighs, and repeats what she's typed out and explained, several times before. "I woke up after the fight with our Black King was over, and most of the other players had already gone through the Door to their next reset."
- (11:39:08 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Echo was there, and she made sure that I knew who she was--a friend, a co-player--and who I was. We only had a few minutes--there was a Tumor with a timer. I went through the door, spent three days in a failed player's apartment, and played my second session. Noone from it was from Sburb.org."
- (11:43:35 PM) lucidChthonia: "That's your rehearsed story." Aelfrida swings the wire wide, at a leg, with the aim for it to wrap around and for her to pull. "I already know your rehearsed story."
- (11:45:51 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "It's the truth! It's what I remember!" A wide swing won't catch her, Dawn nimbly hops backwards, out of range. "What else do you want?"
- (11:50:29 PM) lucidChthonia: "Those memories could've just as well been planted!" Aelf steps forward, trying to herd Dawn into the open hallway door behind her, where she will have less room to maneuver. "I want the real thing. If you have to - " swing - "pick out your own shiny and look at it to see what you remember, you damn well do that."
- (11:56:49 PM) ventricularPipefitter: At the second swing, a razor is in her hands, cleanly slicing through the length of wire. "My /identity/ is my own affair, to keep as private as I wish!" Dawn doesn't back up. She sidesteps once, twice, circling around Aelf. "What I don't remember, and what I cannot know, doesn't bother me!"
- (11:58:17 PM) ventricularPipefitter: "Why can't-" She presses her attack, folding the blade away and striking at Aelf's face and arms with the closed weapon "-anyone understand this!?"
- (9/2/2012 12:03:45 AM) reflectiveAdvisor [[email protected]] entered the room.
- (12:04:02 AM) lucidChthonia: Aelf catches one, two blows intended for her face, wire pulled taut and folded razor bouncing against the electrical cord. A bruise rises on her forearm, and she moves her hands down the line, switching the end with the surviving plug-weight to the other hand, taking advantage of Dawn's close proximity to loop the wire around the other woman's torso and pull both ends, though not without a nosebleed...
- (12:04:03 AM) lucidChthonia: ...for her trouble. "You. Don't. Act. Like. A. Person."
- (12:23:04 AM) ventricularPipefitter: The floodgates open. "If Answers was a Daddy, you'd be the /puta/ licking his taint and moaning for a little enlightenment-juice on your face, is that how this is?" Dawn snarls. "Aelfrida Smithson, you supercilious /cunt/, perhaps if you started treating me like a *person* and not a masturbatory intellectual exercise, you'd actually learn something!"
