      Pokemon Soul Silver Glitchless FAQ

      Pokemon Fire Red Ch'Ding FAQ
2
3-
Q: What does Dratini+ mean?
3+
Q: What does CH'DING mean?
4-
A: It means I'm going to catch a Dratini, and use it (along with it's evolutions) to beat the whole game. In other words, an alternate Pokemon run using Dratini!
4+
A: CH'DING is the nickname of the in-game traded Farfetch'd you get in this game. This is an Alt Pokemon speedrun using that Farfetch'd the beat the game.
5-
The + in Dratini+ is to differentiate it from a potential alt run with *just* Dratini, where you never evolve it
5+
6
Q: Where do you get CH'DING?
7-
Q: Is this run Glitchless or not?
7+
A: CH'DING is acquired in the trade in Vermillion City. I have to complete Nugget Bridge before getting access to Vermillion, but I'll still get it before Misty.
8-
A: Yes, it is glitchless. Alt poke runs are glitchless unless explicitly said otherwise.
8+
It's not actually faster to get it before Misty, but the rules for Alt Pokes suggest that if you can get a Pokemon before a badge (in this case, the second one), you must do so.
9

10-
Q: Where do you get Dratini?
10+
Q: So is this faster than using Blastoise?
11-
A: I'll pick up Dratini in the Goldenrod Game Corner, from playing Voltorb Flip and buying it. So up to that point, the run is very similar to the normal glitchless route.
11+
12

13-
Q: So is this faster than using Raikou?
13+
14
A: I think between 2:20 and 2:50? Unsure completely.
15

16
Q: What are the hardest fights in this run?
17-
A: Just under 4 and a half hours.
17+
A: Lorelei is the worst. And it's not even close.
18
Other particularly tricky fights of note are: Misty (the only fight where CH'DING is disobedient because you don't have enough badges), Game Corner Giovanni, and Lance.
19-
Q: Isn't Dragonite a beast? Is this really that much of a challenge?
19+
20-
A: Dragonite isn't too bad, but as a pseudo legendary it has a terribly slow experience curve. So slow, in fact, that I don't even get Dragonite until partway through Kanto!
20+
Q: Do you manipulate the CH'DING? If so, what are it's stats?
21
A: CH'DING isn't manipped, but as an in-game trade Poke it always has the same stats. It has IVs of 20 HP, 25 Att, 21 Def, 15 Sp Att, 20 Sp Def, 24 Speed with an Adamant nature.
22-
And trust me when I say everything struggles with Red. Just remember that even the most optimal Pokemon, Raikou, which *resists* Pikachu's best moves, still takes over half damage at neutral. The Flying type that Dragonite picks up does not help, at all...
22+
23
Q: What item is it holding?
24
A: It's holding a Stick. It's a specific held item that boosts the crit ratio by 2 stages for Farfetch'd. That means all my moves have a 1/4 chance of critting, instead of the regular 1/16.
25-
A: All of the Dratini segment is pretty bad. Whitney is a bit of a pain, but Rival 3 and Morty are worse. Morty is so bad you have to do some slight grinding otherwise Gengar just OHKOs even at full HP. There are even some really dangerous fights in the Rocket Hideout, Proton there and the Double are quite troublesome.
25+
26
Q: Do you plan to do other Alt Pokemon runs?
27-
For Dragonair, Pryce is pretty bad. Clair requires a ton of setup, but still isn't too risky. The really awful spot is the Kimono Girls. E4 can be troublesome too.
27+
28
29-
For Dragonite, there's this guy towards the end who has pokes 20-25 levels above you. He's a bit tricky...
29+
I've got quite a few more on my list to do in the future (mostly across Gen 4/5). I definitely don't need suggestions on more - I've thought about and considered everything you can imagine. It's hard to find the right mix of something you get early enough in the game that is actually still interesting to use. But I've certainly got some more planned, it just takes a long time to route the whole game with something else.
30
31-
Q: Do you manipulate the Dratini? If so, what are it's stats?
31+
32-
A: Yes. Manipping Dratini is hard, because it's late enough that it'll require a secondary reset, but not manipping it would be suicide. It's IVs are 29 HP, 15 Att, 19 Def, 31 SP Att, 30 Sp Def, 31 Speed with a Modest nature
32+
33
Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
34
A: No, I play on a Gamecube through a Gameboy Player using a Gameboy SP as a controller.
35

36
Q: Why do you choose Squirtle as your starter?
37-
A: No, I'm playing on a DS (phat) with a capture board installed allowing me to record game footage
37+
A: Cause it beats the start of the game the best. I actually think Charmander might be faster for this category since you don't fight Misty (and therefore don't get Water Pulse early), but I've never run with Charmander and I cba learning it when it's the boring part of the run.
38
39-
Q: Why do you choose Cyndaquil as your starter?
39+
Q: Why AREN'T you doing manip for starter stats?
40-
A: Because the Cyndaquil evolution family is the best for the start of the speedrun. I'm literally using the exact same seed/manip for the start of the run that I use in glitchless. This isn't entirely optimal, as there would probably be a Cyndaquil with slightly better IVs given the manip doesn't require you getting Raikou (or fighting Whitney with Quilava), but ultimately it would've meant probably another full week of routing to help by an almost insignificant amount, so I have not bothered looking into that.
40+
A: Because the "manip" in this game involves following the instructions of external tools, which to me personally crosses the line of having tools assisting your speedrun. So I simply refuse to do it.
41

42-
Q: Why do you keep resetting and changing the time?
42+
Q: Why not Leaf Green?
43-
A: I need to use a specific time in order to use RNG manipulation, so I set the clock in such a way that I can use it.
43+
A: I don't own it lol. Basically the same tho.
44-
The timer counts down to when I need to reset for the correct second.
44+
45
Q: Why do you play as the girl?
46-
Q: What is RNG?
46+
A: She's cute.
47-
A: Random Number Generator, the thing that determines everything random within the game, such as stats, encounters and pokerus.
47+
48
Q: Why do you name yourself and Squirtle 'I'?
49-
Q: What is RNG Manipulation?
49+
50-
A: RNG manipulation is used in this speedrun, which involves resetting on a specific second starting from a specific time, and hitting the correct frame for the correct seed after resetting. This allows for manipulating of the wild encounters, Cyndaquils starting stats, Dratinis starting stats, and the lottery so I win the Master Ball
50+
51
Q: Do you catch anything else?
52-
Q: What causes the resets?
52+
A: I catch 2 HM slaves, one for Cut, and one for Fly. Can vary what they are depending on what shows up.
53-
A: I missed initial starting seed. There are 2 ways to check whether I hit the correct seed:
53+
54-
1) I check my Trainer ID. The one I am aiming for is 39391. I know if I get this ID, I hit the right starting seed, as that is generated at the same time. This is what I used to do, as it is the first thing you can do to check, but it takes ~3 seconds to check so I tend to instead...
54+
55-
2) I check the movement of the NPCs in New Bark Town. Because their movement is derived from the RNG, I can tell I hit it based on their movements. If the girl faces Down, then turn Right, Down, and then Left, I got it
55+
A: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmngen3ext#Alt_Main_Pokes_FireRedLeafGreen (Real answer is there isn't one atm, so whatever I get.)
56-
If not I didn't hit the right seed, so I reset. The RNG for the seed advances every frame, so it is a frame perfect trick
56+
57
Q: What is your goal time?
58-
Q: Why is your movement so strange at the start of the run?
58+
A: To get a decently clean run.
