+ | Pokemon Fire Red Manipless (Glitchless) FAQ
|
- | I am running this at AusSpeedruns @ DreamHack, which is on April 26th-28th. You can find the schedule here: https://ausspeedruns.com/ASDH2024/schedule
+ |
A: No, I am playing on a DS with a capture board installed |
- | --
+ |
Q: Why do you choose Squirtle as your starter? |
- | Note that if I get a Squirtle with super good stats (12 Sp Att and 10 Speed at Level 5, 81/3200 chance (~2.5%)), I will switch to Glitchless (Manipless). This is because Squirtle's stats matter way more in Glitchless because you use it for the whole run.
+ |
|
- | Otherwise, I'll be doing any% Manipless. The glitched run.
+ |
A: Because the "manip" in this game involves following the instructions of external tools, which to me personally crosses the line of having tools assisting your speedrun. So I choose to play the game in a way that actually feels legitimate to me, so all my runs of FR/LG are manipless. |
- | --
+ |
Q: What stats do you need on Squirtle? |
- | Q: So how does this run work?
+ | A: Either 11 Special Attack and 10 Speed, or 12 Special Attack and 9 Speed. The other 3 stats do matter as well, I won't won't specifically reset just because they are bad.
- | A: This run is based around a Mail Corruption glitch you can activate in double battles. It requires the use of the moves Recycle, and Knock Off.
+ |
- | As such, it means you have to get a Mr Mime up to level 33 (for Recycle), and a Farfetch'd to Level 21 (for Knock Off). As such, you gotta catch an Abra, trade it for Mr Mime as soon as you get to Vermillion, and then use it as your main until it reaches Level 33.
+ | Q: Do you catch any other Pokemon?
A: Only for HMs. One for Fly (Pidgey/Spearow), and one for Cut (Rattata/Paras) |
- | So the route is a bit different in that regard for quite a bit of the run. After doing the glitch, you can warp straight to the end.
+ |
Q: Why do you play as the girl? |
A: She's cute. No advantage either way, the text differences between the two are within a handful of frames. |
- | A: Uhh I mean eventually it'll probably be sub 1:20, but for now any improvement is fine.
+ |
Q: Why do you name yourself and Squirtle 'I'? |
- | Q: What are the hardest fights in this run?
+ |
- | A: Mostly the early game fights as usual. Mr Mime actually does pretty well for it's fights - the most annoying by far is actually the final one where you setup the glitch, mostly because it's the only one Mr Mime can disobey you on.
+ |
Q: Why do you name the rival KAZ? |
- | The 'hardest' thing to do i.e. the biggest variance point, is catch an Abra. Both encountering one and having to just chuck the ball.
+ | A: It's the shortest of the default names, and makes resetting for Squirtles quicker, since its about 2 seconds faster to name him KAZ. Over the course of a finished run, ends up being <1 second slower.
|
- | ---
+ | Q: Why Fire Red and not Leaf Green?
A: I only own Fire Red. Leaf Green can get better options for Cut slave (can get Sandshrew after Mt Moon which can then also learn Strength), but it's not worth buying another cart for. |
|
- | A: No, I am playing on a Gamecube through a Gameboy Player using a Gameboy SP as a controller.
+ | Q: What are the hardest parts of this run?
A: Depends how risky you play, really. Forcing torrent can always be added risks for timesaves throughout the run. There's also the chance of missing Mega Kicks and later in the run, Blizzards. |
- |
I'd say the worst fights are Rival 2, Rival 3, and Koga |
Other fights that can be troublesome are Misty, Picknicker Martha (in Rock Tunnel), Rival 4, Erika, Rival 5, Rival 6, and all of the E4. |
|
Q: What is WR? |
A: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnfrlgext?h=Manipless-glitchless&x=824le5ed-38dexy1n.14oxr3eq |
|
- | A: At least 11 Special Attack, and I'm looking for Attack + Sp Att + Speed to be at least 31 (So 10/11/10, or 11/11/9 or better), or 9/12/9 or better
+ | Q: What is with those split icons? What does A and B mean?
A: This is a grading system for all of my splits. I'm sure you are familiar with grades, A+ being the best then going down from there. So the idea is, if the split has an A+ next to it, my time there was really good and would be very difficult to beat. If it's a C though for example, it was quite poor, and I should be able to save time there pretty easily. |
|
- | A: She's cute.
+ | This way, everyone watching has more accurate information on where I can save time, and where I should be making up time. Also that all time loss is not equal, as losing time vs an A+ split isn't really that bad, whereas losing time vs a C split is really bad. It'll probably take a while for a lot of people watching to pick up the meaning so I will appreciate everyone who explains how this works (correctly) in chat to new people.
|
Q: What is your goal time? |
A: Ideally a 2:04 I guess. Having fun with this, so I'll keep going for a bit.
