  1. Pokemon Fire Red any% (Manipless) FAQ
  2.
  3. I am running this at AusSpeedruns @ DreamHack, which is on April 26th-28th. You can find the schedule here: https://ausspeedruns.com/ASDH2024/schedule
  4.
  5. --
  6.
  7. Note that if I get a Squirtle with super good stats (12 Sp Att and 10 Speed at Level 5, 81/3200 chance (~2.5%)), I will switch to Glitchless (Manipless). This is because Squirtle's stats matter way more in Glitchless because you use it for the whole run.
  8.
  9. Otherwise, I'll be doing any% Manipless. The glitched run.

  12.
  13. Q: So how does this run work?
  14. A: This run is based around a Mail Corruption glitch you can activate in double battles. It requires the use of the moves Recycle, and Knock Off.
  15. As such, it means you have to get a Mr Mime up to level 33 (for Recycle), and a Farfetch'd to Level 21 (for Knock Off). As such, you gotta catch an Abra, trade it for Mr Mime as soon as you get to Vermillion, and then use it as your main until it reaches Level 33.
  16.
  17. So the route is a bit different in that regard for quite a bit of the run. After doing the glitch, you can warp straight to the end.
  18.
  19. Q: What is your goal time?
  20. A: Uhh I mean eventually it'll probably be sub 1:20, but for now any improvement is fine.
  21.
  22. Q: What are the hardest fights in this run?
  23. A: Mostly the early game fights as usual. Mr Mime actually does pretty well for it's fights - the most annoying by far is actually the final one where you setup the glitch, mostly because it's the only one Mr Mime can disobey you on.
  24.
  25. The 'hardest' thing to do i.e. the biggest variance point, is catch an Abra. Both encountering one and having to just chuck the ball.
  26.
  27. ---
  28.
  29. Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
  30. A: No, I am playing on a Gamecube through a Gameboy Player using a Gameboy SP as a controller.
  31.
  32. Q: Why do you choose Squirtle as your starter?
  33. A: Cause it beats the early game the best.
  34.
  35. Q: Why AREN'T you doing manip for starter stats?
  36. A: Because the "manip" in this game involves following the instructions of external tools, which to me personally crosses the line of having tools assisting your speedrun. So I choose to play the game in a way that actually feels legitimate to me, so all my runs of FR/LG are manipless.
  37.
  38. Q: What stats do you need on Squirtle?
  39. A: At least 11 Special Attack, and I'm looking for Attack + Sp Att + Speed to be at least 31 (So 10/11/10, or 11/11/9 or better), or 9/12/9 or better
  40.
  41. Q: Why do you play as the girl?
  42. A: She's cute.
  43.
  44. Q: Why do you name yourself and Squirtle 'I'?
  45. A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes, and the letter 'I' gives a nice spin as if the game was self-narrating
  46.
  47. Q: What is WR?
  48. A: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnfrlgext?h=Manipless-glitched&x=824le5ed-38dexy1n.192407yq
  49. Worth noting that the 1:18:40 time actually used the starter program, which is now entirely banned from manipless runs (but the run will stay on the leaderboard, as it was set before the rule was put into place to specifically ban any use of it).
  50.
  51. Q: Why is the screen so blurry??
  52. A: Because Spain currently holds the soccer world cup, Vine just launched, Djokovic is about to win his 6th slam, SM64 records are held by siglemic, Gangnam Style just reached 1 billion views, the best way to reach me is to message me on Skype, Snowden is still in the US, and this is what things look like in 2013.
  53. Enjoy your stay.
