  1. Mom, why isn’t Daddy here with us? I haven’t seen him for a long time. You’ve told me he went to work on an oil rig? Is that true, mommy?
  2.
  3. (She is a bit hesitant. On the one hand, she hates bringing up the memory of what had happened, but on the other hand, she also had a feeling that her daughter would find out eventually, and when that happened, she knew it’d be worse for her.)
  4.
  5. Well, Amy, um…
  6.
  7. (She hesitates a bit)
  8.
  9. Um…um..
  10.
  11. Mom? Are you gonna say anything?
  12.
  13. Yeah, I am. Just give me a sec.
  14.
  15. (She pauses to collect her thoughts. Taking a deep breath, she readies herself.)
  16.
  17. Amy, your dad did go to work on an oil rig. I didn’t make that part up.
  18.
  19. “Alright, mommy. Something’s gonna come up though, isn’t it?”
  20.
  21. Yeah. A few days after he visited us, there was an explosion at the oil rig and a lot of people died. And sadly, daddy was one of them.
  22.
  23. “What? So you’ve been lying about the fact that he’s dead for months? “
  24.
  25. Trust me, Amy, it wasn’t an easy thing to do. But I didn’t want to hurt you. I worried that if I told you right then that he was dead that you wouldn’t be able to cope with it.
  26.
  27. “So you felt that the best thing to do was to keep me in the dark about him being dead and give me false hope? I’d argue that’s even worse than just telling me the truth in the first place. “
  28.
  29. “You lied to me. You straight-up LIED to me for all these months…….”
  30.
  31. (Amy breaks down and starts to cry. Her mother is unsure of what to do.)
  32.
  33. Look, I know what I did was wrong. I know that. But you can count on me. Here, you can hold on to me all you want.
  34.
  35. “No. I need you to go away. I need some space. I’m not ready to forgive you just yet.”
  36.
  37. But you know you can come to me, right?
  38.
  39. “Yeah, I do. But right now, I want to be on my own.”
  40.
  41. Alright. I’ll be in the kitchen if you need anything.
  42.
  43. (The mom walks away. Amy groans slightly)
