  1.
  2. Waku Motohama is sitting in The Chair, her arms crossed like she is Someone Important conducting Official Business, except... her eyes are closed and her head is tilted down. Is -- is she taking a nap at the reception desk?
  3. Ambaghai Iriq enters the building quietly, already turning toward the kitchen as he closes the door behind him. He nearly misses Waku entirely on the way in. He makes his way toward the kitchen before stopping suddenly, having just registered the figure in the chair. He turns and walks a little closer to the desk, head tilted as he tries to get a look at Waku's face.
  4. Waku Motohama doesn't move at first, staying in the exact same position aside from the slow, quiet in-and-out of her breathing. It's when he takes a small step towards the desk that she starts slightly, looking up with a blink. A slight pause, then - "Oh, hello Mister Ambaghai," she greets, voice bright and cheerful as normal. "How are you today?"
  5. Ambaghai Iriq straightens up and pretends he'd been fully expecting to find a sleeping Waku at the front desk. "Fine," he answers. He stares at her a second longer before asking, "Were you asleep?"
  6. Waku Motohama clears her throat. "What is sleep, really, but a very elongated blink?" A pause. "--Okay yeah, maybe just a bit. I wanted to, you know, try out the chair, you know. Feel all... 'formal'. Then I got to thinking about something and, well." A shrug.
  7. Ambaghai Iriq: "I think those aren't..." he begins to respond, but trails off when Waku continues speaking. He thinks for a moment, "Should I have left you? To sleep."
  8. Waku Motohama shakes her head. "Oh, absolutely not. I'd much rather not have someone like Rhys or Kowa finding me. They wouldn't let me hear the end of it."
  9. Ambaghai Iriq: "Okay." He stands there silently for a few seconds, and clears his throat quietly before he speaks again. "I read the papers that you gave me. I should thank you for the effort."
  10. Waku Motohama laughs. "It's no trouble at all. Think you're ready to put it into practice?"
  11. Ambaghai Iriq thinks on this for moment, which he punctuates with a movement of the head that... is surely meant to be a nod? "I... might be. It is not easy to be sure."
  12. Waku Motohama laughs as she stands up. "Well, let's see how you do, then. Just do the best you can, alright? You're learning something new, so any step forward is progress."
  13. Ambaghai Iriq nods tensely after a momet. "Right." A pause, "Now?" A quick glance toward the staircase leading to the clinic rooms, then blinks slowly and trains his posture into something more relaxed, before giving another, less tense nod. "Right."
  14. Waku Motohama: May as well - unless you're busy?
  15. Ambaghai Iriq: "No, I'm not." He makes for the staircase. As he makes his way downstairs he starts digging through the satchel at his side to pull out the papers that Waku had given him.
  16. Ambaghai Iriq pauses as he glances at the rooms, then makes for the same one as last time. Sure the room doesn't matter right?
  17. Waku Motohama does notice the pause, and the routine selection of the one they'd used previously. She can't restrain a grin.
  18. Waku Motohama: Let me know if you need a bit of help or reminders, eh? But otherwise... I'm all yours, doc.
  19. Ambaghai Iriq is busy staring at the papers - specifically, the one he's supposed to fill out - and (thankfully for him) misses Waku's grin. He furrows a brow, digs into the satchel again to pull out a charcoal pencil, and nods in acknowledgement of Waku's offer. He writes something down, then glances up at Waku. "Okay. I am... supposed to ask you your age, and when you were born."
  20. Waku Motohama: Twenty-nine, and I was born in Doma.
  21. Ambaghai Iriq writes both of those things down. "Okay... height and weight..." he glances over at the device Waku had used, and gestures at it wordlessly.
  22. Waku Motohama can't restrain a small giggle at the brusqueness, but she obediently steps up onto it. She isn't going to make this harder on him then she has to. "Do you remember how to use this from watching me?"
  23. Ambaghai Iriq: "I... might." He does his best to ignore the giggle as he walks over and starts messing with the device to the best of his ability. He doesn't seem to have any difficulty with measuring her height, which he jots down quickly. He fiddles with the sliders for the weight for a few seconds. Pauses. Slides them around a bit more, then stares at the wall a bit reluctantly when he realizes he doesn't actually know where they're supposed to balance.
  24. Ambaghai Iriq: (( I'm just assuming it's like any doctor's office scale ))
  25. Waku Motohama: (( Yeah, that was my assumption too! ))
  26. Waku Motohama points to the larger of the two weight slider. "So, you start by either kinda estimating the weight, or having the patient tell you what their weight was last time they got checked up. Mine was, uh - " There's a pause. "Ninty ponze, but I've gained weight since then, so... Try setting it at 110 or so. Your goal is to then slide the small weight until this balance beam here is totally horizontal. " Given Waku's height of 5'6, her first quoted weight is... pretty underweight.
  27. Ambaghai Iriq blinks and stops staring at the wall, opting for flipping (as sublty as he can, as though somehow he thinks he can avoid notice) through the papers, sure there must be something there about the scale. He stops shuffling and looks up when Waku begins to explain. After a moment of consideration, he sets the weight to what she'd suggested, then starts making any adjustments needed for the bar to balance horizontally.
  28. Waku Motohama watches him with a smile, and when the bar and needle start to even out, she shifts her attention to the measurements. There's a look of relief on her face when she sees what she's weighing in at. "Ah -- 118. This big weight tells you the first part of the number, and the little weight tells you what the last number is."
  29.
  30. Ambaghai Iriq takes a close look at the weights to make sure the number he reads is the same as what she'd quoted. He jots that down, too, and makes a mental note to mess around with this thing when no one is looking. "One-eightteen..." he starts flipping through the papers again, seemingly looking for something specific. If she's paying attention, Waku might notice some little notes he's written for himself along the edges of some of the sheets. And -
  31. Ambaghai Iriq - on the one he settles on as he skims it for some speciifc information - a small, inky paw print (along with some other ink smudges). "Is that not... low? Or..."
  32. Waku Motohama gives him a small smile. "It's a bit low, yeah, but it's better than before."
  33. Ambaghai Iriq flips the papers closed again. He stares at her for a moment. "Then... you should eat more?" He pauses. "But if it is better than before... that's. Good." He is not good at this. Another pause and he clears his throat. "Okay, next..." he stares down at the form on the top of the stack.
  34. Waku Motohama: All of the post-meeting feasts are certainly helping with that one.
  35. Ambaghai Iriq nods in response, though he's still staring down at the paper. "I am... supposed to look in your mouth." His expression is blank as he stares down at the paper. After what looks like a silent sigh, he looks at Waku. Though his expression is mostly blank, something about it seems to say 'do I have to?'.
  36. Waku Motohama tilts her head curiously. "Is it, you know. Something that really grosses you out?"
  37. Ambaghai Iriq shakes his head, then frowns thoughtfully. "It seems... weird." The thoughtful expression stays on his face as he tries to search for a better word.
  38. Waku Motohama: Well, it doesn't have to be the first test that's run. It's something you're supposed to check on - I mean, what if I have some horrible growth in there or something? - but since I don't have a sore throat, we can maybe even skip it.
  39. Ambaghai Iriq tilts his head a bit. "I understand why," he thinks a moment more and shakes his head absently, "I can do it, but... is it not uncomfortable?"
  40. Waku Motohama: What, for you to look in my mouth?
  41. Ambaghai Iriq nods.
  42. Waku Motohama: Mm... I don't mind it, really - I think I made a big fuss when I was a kid? But I've gotten used to it over the years because I've had physicals fairly regularly.
  43. Ambaghai Iriq blinks. He doesn't seem to have been expecting that answer. "Oh." he nods slightly and considers. "I have never had someone look in my mouth without cause." He glances over to the table, then gestures over to it with a glance at Waku.
  44. Waku Motohama walks over with a nod, settling down to take a seat. "I'm not judging, mind! Just, you know. It won't be like you're torturing me or anything."
  45. Ambaghai Iriq follows Waku over to the table, setting down the papers near the table's edge, slides some over to reveal a specific page (still some hand written notes in the margins. Less signgs of cat). He looks it over to remind himself what to look for. He does seem more comfortable with the idea now he knows its not uncomfortable for Waku. "Alright," he blinks at her, stares a little blankly, "Open your mouth?" Comfortable or no, he's still not good at this.
  46. Waku Motohama spares a glance at the page, but really, she's not here to embarrass the man any more than necessary - cat-soaked papers or not. Waku does so, presenting the pink insides of her mouth along with her very, very well-cared for teeth. Someone brushes twice a day and uses mouthwash!
  47. Ambaghai Iriq looks inside, comparing the inside of Waku's mouth with the swatches she's given him. He looks to the back of her throat. Does he need a tongue depressor? He straightens up and looks around the room, striding over to the cabinet to grab one and walking back. He stands there for a moment with depressor in hand. "Um. Am I supposed to say anything before I do this?" He indicates the depressor with a small motion.
  48. Waku Motohama manages to keep herself from laughing this time, instead watching him with interest as he figures out what to do piece-by-piece. "It usually is polite to warn someone before you put something in their mouth, and its easier to see what you need to if they're making an 'aaah' sound. If you need a script... 'I'm going to use this to help me get a better look at your throat. Open your mouth and say 'ahh'."
  49. Ambaghai Iriq looks a bit reluctant to repeat after her, but he nods. It takes him a moment, and he starts in a bit of a mutter, but he does repeat (not quite word-for-word), "I'm... going to take a better look at your throat. Open your mouth and say 'aah'." It's worse than any rendition of 'terrible actor reading directly off a script', but he says it.
  50.
  51. Waku Motohama obediently does so, the 'aaaah' reverberating from her voice box. Don't smirk! Don't smirk! He's trying his best; don't smirk! Luckily, Waku's throat is quite healthy, with no strange bits or bumps to hem and haw over.
  52. Ambaghai Iriq uses the depressor to push her tongue down, a little bit of doubt on his face, and stares into the back of her throat. "Seems normal," he mutters quietly before removing the depressor and jotting that down.
  53. Waku Motohama nods, then gives him a smile once the object is out of her mouth. "See? Not too bad."
  54. Ambaghai Iriq nods. "It is okay." He reads over the paper he's been filling out as he finishes writing, and straightens up a little. "Oh. I was supposed to ask about...," he starts reading directly off it, "Allergies. Problems that run in your family. Health conditions you already have." He gives her a questioning glance.
  55. Waku Motohama begins to tick each thing off on her fingers as she goes through them. She seems pleased, though, that he remembered. "I'm extremely allergic to bee stings - not too horrible of a problem in Thanalan, but I keep an adrenaline shot on hand just in case, especially when I'm travelling. In the very worst cases, I can stop breathing, so... it's something I'm pretty careful about. I don't have any other health conditions, but my grandfather had something wrong with his blood - though
  56. Waku Motohama: it was never properly diagnosed before his passing - and my mother had a heart murmur.
  57. Ambaghai Iriq starts writing down these details. He pauses momentairly at the word 'adrenaline', not familiar with it in this context, but he scribbles something down lightly before continuing. He jots down the details about her family members, taking a similar pause with 'murmur'. When he finishes, he looks at her again, "Something wrong with his blood? Are there other details, or is that all you know?"
  58. Waku Motohama shakes her head. "He died quite young; he was only forty cycles old or so, and I'd never met him. I was told it was like anemia, but much worse. He'd have these episodes of pain that would come and go, and he was often very sickly."
  59. Ambaghai Iriq nods, writes down those few sparing details (another pause in the writing). He looks over what he's written. Frowns a little. "Adrenaline is... something that stops..." he pauses, tries to think of the word, then shakes his head and settles for, "Reactions?"
  60. Waku Motohama: Ah - yes, they call it 'anaphylactic shock' here. An extreme allergic reaction. When it happens, you get dizzy, your heart stops beating right, and your throat gets real tight - like it's all closed up. Adrenaline is a chemical that stops that from happening. It's actually something your body naturally makes too! Its the reason your heart starts beating fast when you're scared.
  61. Ambaghai Iriq blinks, then quickly moves to write on one of the informative papers (not the report he's been filling out). He puts careful consideration into which characters of his own script would match it phoentically as close as possible. He writes its meaning more quickly. "I might have misunderstood what the word meant." He nods, then turns his attention back to the report to see what's left. "Okay. Pulse. Breathing. Stomach." He glances to Waku. "Is that all?"
  62. Waku Motohama nods. "My neck is a bother to examine due to my scales, and I have no reason to believe anything is wrong with my hearing, so... yes, I think that should cover it."
  63. Ambaghai Iriq nods and holds out a hand, palm up. It takes him a moment before he realizes he ought to clarify. "Um. Your wrist."
  64. Waku Motohama sheds the glove off her left hand, pulling up the sleeve of her jacket so she can offer it to him.
  65. Ambaghai Iriq holds her wrist gently as he takes her pulse. This at least seems to be something he's familiar with.
  66. Waku Motohama stays quiet. Luckily, there's nothing particularly weird about the rhythm or the tempo - its high enough to suggest she's not an athlete or anything, but still within a comfortably healthy range.
  67. Ambaghai Iriq nods and lets go of her wrist, writes quickly, then looks around for the stethoscope. He moves to grab it, then realizes he's grabbed the wrong one. He looks a little distastefully at the... ear nubs... before replacing it and picking up the correct one. He stares at Waku questioningly. "I'm supposed to listen to your stomach?"
  68. Waku Motohama: Yeah, so... you're basically making sure all the fluids in my stomach are...
  69. Waku Motohama pauses, waving a bit. There seems to be a word or term she's either looking for or trying to invent for Amba's benefit. "...Sloshing the way they should be? After that you listen to my lungs to make sure I'm breathing right, and my heart to, well - make sure it's not beating unevenly or anything."
  70. Ambaghai Iriq nods. He clips the stethoscope onto his horns, looks at the little end-disk-thingie, then stares at Waku. A few seconds pass. "Do you need to lift your shirt?" he asks, recalling his own physical.
  71.
  72. Waku Motohama blinks, not having realized his pause wasn't simply a prepatory period of psyching himself up or mentally going over notes. "I can do it just fine," she replies, pulling up the edges of her shirt. The only abnormal thing about her stomach is a scar from a fairly impressive stab wound.
  73. Ambaghai Iriq notices the wound, but doesn't seem fazed by its presence. He presses the stethescope against her stomach.
  74. Waku Motohama 's stomach sloshes and glops the normal amount.
  75. Ambaghai Iriq writes another quick note, then shuffles the papers to a specific sheet, double checking the right spot to place the stethescope as he checks her breath.
  76. Waku Motohama || There is luckily no wheezing, crackling, or squeaking happeiing in her chest, nor is there any fluid in her lungs that shouldn't be there. Waku seems quite proud that he's managing this pretty well.
  77. Ambaghai Iriq writes another quick note before moving on to her heart. While he's listening he decides to ask, "Would it have been better to take your pulse at the same time as doing this?"
  78. Waku Motohama: It's easier to take a proper pulse using the wrist; besides, people tend to be more comfortable when the 'listening to your heart sounds' part takes less time, and it lets you focus on making sure the sound of the beat is right.
  79. Ambaghai Iriq nods, and listens a little bit more to make sure everything sounds right.
  80. Waku Motohama heart does seem to be beating correctly; the lub-dup happens at a consistent rate and seems quite audible. Nothing is swishing and hissing in there, so it seems that Waku hasn't manifested any strange heart or blood conditions yet.
  81. Ambaghai Iriq nods and removes the stethoscope, returning it to where he'd gotten it from before writing one last(?) note. He takes a look over the report. "That... is all," he says, somewhere between a question and a statement.
  82. Waku Motohama: You can ask me about my eating and sleeping habits if you want, but you can probably just jot down 'needs improvement' in that category to save some time.
  83. Waku Motohama gives him a big grin.
  84. Ambaghai Iriq does so.
  85. Waku Motohama moves to push herself off the table. "Good job! I can tell you studied."
  86. Ambaghai Iriq avoids eye contact, very slightly. He gives a small nod. Another unneccessary clearing of the throat. "Thank you. Again."
  87. Waku Motohama: Of course! I figured it'd make it, you know, a lot easier for you. You can either bring the evaluation to Director Brimaine herself, or one of the gals at the desk might be nice enough to do it for you.
  88. Ambaghai Iriq stares at the report. Really stares at it. Another nod, "I will."
  89. Waku Motohama can't help a laugh at this intense decision-making process. Then, "How've you been feeling, by the way? Still been tired?" Waku begins to put her gloves back on.
  90. Ambaghai Iriq responds, "The same." It's probably not a very helpful reply.
  91. Waku Motohama: How often? Have you been keeping track?
  92. Ambaghai Iriq frowns and thinks, then digs into his satchel again and pulls out a sheet of paper. On it is a very neatly drawn calendar. Despite not knowing how to write eorzean, he at least seems familiar enough with the numbering system, as each day is numbered in eorzean. Some of the days are marked with small, thick lines. There doesn't seem to be a discernible pattern, but about 1/4 to 1/3 of the days have a mark. He offers the paper to Waku without a word.
  93. Waku Motohama takes it, staring at the calendar for a moment before it just - comes out. "You are an incredibly charming person."
  94. Waku Motohama is being wholly genuine. He made a /calendar!/
  95. Ambaghai Iriq blinks a few times. This is not the reaction he'd been expecting. He tilts his head slightly, "Why?"
  96. Waku Motohama waves the paper slightly. "It's concise, saves me effort, and shows a wonderful precision and care for detail that I find highly endearing in people."
  97. Ambaghai Iriq 's eyes shift off to the side. He doesn't quite know what to make of this. "Thank you?" Is that the right response? He does not know.
  98. Waku Motohama seems to accept it, at least, so it's probably a good enough one. She tucks the paper into an inside pocket of her jacket. "Anyway; I appreciate it. Thanks for the check-up - I should probably grab myself some dinner or something."
  99. Ambaghai Iriq: "Alright. Good bye, then." He pauses, shifts his weight quickly from one leg to the other, and clears his throat, "And thank you. For... this. Help." He make himself busy with gathering up the papers and tucking them back into his satchel, careful to not tuck the report in with them.
  100. Waku Motohama gives him a bright smile. "'Course. Colleagues help each other out, right? And if there's ever something you need translated, I'm sure I can help you find a person. I'm happy to help you learn to read Eorzean, but - " A shrug. "It's nice to read things that feel familiar."
  101. Ambaghai Iriq closes up the satchel and glances over to Waku. He nods. "You have been... very considerate."
  102. Waku Motohama shrugs. "Helping people find things to read is a bit ingrained in me, honestly."
  103. Ambaghai Iriq: "Still, I am thankful." He settles his satchel over his shoulder and picks up the report.
  104. Waku Motohama nods. "You're welcome, then. Anyway - I'm going to go visit the kitchen; have a good rest of your evening, Mister Ambaghai!"
  105. Ambaghai Iriq nods and offers up a "Good night" as she leaves.
