A couple of the stable-maids insist the sculptor William's in love with the Princess. Listened to them gossiping and giggling for quite a while. If a third of it's true, well...'

How much store could I set by what I heard? Rumour has wings, as everyone knows. But some of what they were saying chimed with what I'd seen. There was the day in the courtyard I found her, wistfully caressing the lions' sparkling silver manes. Or the evening I glanced into William's sketches and found many of the Princess, looking happy and unusually carefree...
