The attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.
The President of the United States is in Salamanca, Spain, about to address the city in a public square. We see a plain-clothes cop, his girlfriend with another man, a mother and child, an American tourist with a video camera, and a Secret Service agent newly returned from medical leave. Shots ring out and the President falls; a few minutes later, we hear a distant explosion, then a bomb goes off in the square. Those minutes are retold, several times, emphasizing different characters' actions. Gradually, we discover who's behind the plot. Is the Secret Service one step ahead, or have the President's adversaries thought of everything?
Director Pete Travis gives us a pulse-pounding, quick-cut action movie. U.S. President Ashton(William Hurt)is in Spain to address a global summit on terrorism. Just after stepping to the podium in the crowded town square, he is hit by an assassin's bullet and almost immediately the crowd is rocked by a bomb. In the confusion the leader of the "Free World" is kidnapped. Secret Service agent Thomas Barnes(Dennis Quaid),previously wounded taking a bullet for the president, back on duty quickly takes a look at a tourist's(Forest Whitaker)camcorder thinking the shooter can be identified. Sigourney Weaver is a CNN producer, who also has a point of view of the event. The movie you may say unfolds as it "rewinds" the same chaotic minutes from the view of several involved characters. The most exciting sequence happens when Agent Barnes ends up in a thrilling car chase after one of his own, Agent Kent Taylor(Matthew Fox). Quite an amusement park ride of a movie. Others in the cast: Bruce McGill, Ayelet Zurer, Edgar Ramirez, Zoe Saldana and Eduardo Noriega.
Going back and forth reminded me of Groundhogs Day! It was super annoying to see the same events over and over, and then, they didn't even tell you WHY the terrorists were bombing and shooting! It was not worth the $14! It could have been a great movie had they gone into depth instead of jumping back to the beginning! You had no idea why they had the brother, why they were shooting the president, we needed more information on Dennis Quaids character, and Forrest Whitaker needed some character development!! Bad MOVIE!!! This movie could have been like The Usual Suspects in that it could have kept some secrets until the end... they showed a LOT on the previews... like the double president??? Why do they have a double?? We don't know!!
If you can work your way past Vantage Point's goofy casting that places a bland, blank-eyed Hurt in the White House, then I suppose you can manage to forgive this "Rashomon" rip-off's other glaring idiosyncrasies, of which there are many.
Vantage Point is based on a screenplay by American screenwriter Barry Levy. Yes, the satellite was footage from <a href="/title/tt0432021/">Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)</a> (2007). Both Vantage Point and Resident Evil: Extinction are films owned by Sony.  a5c7b9f00b
