- 5280? Really? That’s the best you could come up with? Miles come from Latin phrase mille which means 1000. Cool. But the romans believed that was 1000 Roman paces, approximately 4800 American feet. So when parliament in the 1500’s was like “hey we need to standardize the mile,” I DONT BLAME THEM! THATS A GREAT IDEA. But then they decided to take the bum-fuckiest path available by making the mile 8 furlongs. A FURLONG??? Why 8?? Who the HELL besides horse racers gives a shit about a furlong???? So yeah, instead of just going “hey let’s round up to 5000 feet and call it a day,” they decided, “HEYYYYY why not make it unnecessarily complicated and use a unit only a small group of people knows to standardize something that could VERY EASILY HAVE BEEN DONE A SIMPLER WAY!” I get feet. Feet are fine; if you averaged the length of all grown men’s feet, itd maybe be kinda close to that. Whatever. 12 inches in a foot? I’m cool with that, 12 has lots of factors so it’s easy to work with. But 5280??????? One step too far parliament. Metric System. 10’s. Aligns with our base 10 number system. Cool. Awesome. It works.
