That Pervasive Love

And yet, doing that only makes me love you more

I write you a letter
And you seemingly respond back
Yet you seem almost a tad bit detached
To be honest, I am too

I keep your picture on the wall
I look at it
And you look so handsome
I remember the times we had
And fall into memory once more

Reality, however, quickly barges in
And I realize that things have changed
Time passes by
And I finally begin to realize that love is dead

I meet another man
He looks at me with love and affection
He is handsome too
And makes me feel like a new woman

Time passes by with him
I lose memory of the man I once knew
And remove his picture from the wall
I place it in a drawer, lying there
Where it receives dust

Further time passes
The clock ticks by
Occasional thoughts of the man I knew
Enter into me
But I see the man lying before me
And the man I knew fades from my mind

The two of us date each other
I love him
And he loves me
And as we walk along the beach
He moves closer to me
And I to him

I kiss him and he kisses me back
He looks at me and I look at him
He winks at me and with his breath
Leads me to his home and to his room

What happened next
I dare not say
But I can only recount the day
When in a state of total bliss

One day
I am at home
I receive a call
But am unsure if I should answer
Something tells me I should, however
And so I do so

I grab my phone and answer
On the other end of the line
A familiar voice appears

"Hey, Sarah" piped the other end of the line
"I want to know how you're doing. It's been a while, hasn't it?"
I was a bit shocked to get a phone call from Donovan
Sure, we loved each other, but it had been many years since we last saw each other

My interest was piqued, however, and I decided to talk with him
"Well, Don, I'd have to say that I've been doing pretty well. Can't complain, really."
Don responded back
"I've been waiting for you for all this time. I long to see you once more."
At this point, I was floored
I did love him, but so much time had passed and I was dating someone else
I liked him, but I no longer loved him
I thought the distance would have ended his love for me
And yet, it still seemed to shine brightly
I knew that I would have to respond to him
But it would be an awkward conversation

"Umm, I'm not really in love with you anymore. I've met someone else and I love him."
A momentary silence came on the other end of the line
It seemed as though nothing would happen
But Don did ultimately respond
"I'm upset at you, but cannot bear to let myself out to you. Goodbye, Sarah. It was nice knowing you."

Before long, Don hung up
And I thought to myself
If the new love I had made was worth it

I sat on my chair
Silently pondering
Whether the love I made with Ryan
Was worth it or not

The love I once shared with Don
The love I now have with Ryan
I had in life loved many people
And I knew that love would remain in me
So long as I lived

The man I loved returned back home
I looked at him and he looked at me
And at that moment
I knew that it was worth it in the end
To be by his side
And to be with him all the days of my life
