  44. A teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.
  45. The lonely teenager Brendan finds his former girlfriend Emily dead in the entrance of a tunnel of sewage and recalls her phone call two days ago, when she said to him that she was in trouble. Brendan, who still loved Emily, met bad elements of his high-school trying to contact her, and when he succeeded, she told him that she was OK. He hides her body in the tunnel and decides to investigate the meaning and connection of four words, including "brick" and "pin", that Emily told him to find who killed her. Using the support of his nerd friend Brain, he successively meets the small time drug dealers Kara, Dode, Brad Bramish, Laura and Tugger, to reach the teenager powerful drug dealer The Pin. Slowly, Brendan unravels the motives why Emily was killed and plots a revenge.
  46. A man -- or in this case, a very young man -- trying to investigate the murder of his one time girlfriend is the theme of this stylish neo-noir film that owes a wallop to films of the likes of THE BIG SLEEP and THE MALTESE FALCON, particularly the former in plot. Brendan is that guy, who has the unfortunate position of finding Emily&#39;s lifeless body in a culvert, and because she and he had unfinished business, he decides to at least do something to maybe clear her name, maybe seek the truth, maybe look for closure, and maybe find that elusive brick that was the cause of her death.<br/><br/>Rian Johnson has come up with a movie that despite having actors who, except for Richard Roundtree, are smack in the middle of their twenties and could not possibly know how noir films work. Even with its subtle nods to comedy speckled here and there, BRICK has a firm sense of plot complications, atmosphere, characterization, and an overall sense of the unpredictable that basically were the blueprint for the genre. There are not one, but two femme fatales here, though one of them brings comic relief whenever she is on, there is the loose cannon, the very shady dealer, and red herrings thrown in between, all in a high school setting, and it&#39;s flawless in execution and presentation.<br/><br/>Joseph Gordon-Hewitt may not know it, but his character&#39;s progression from a secure, smug man who becomes a little more broken the deeper he gets into these murky waters is a dead ringer for Bogart and even Nicholson in CHINATOWN. His vulnerability comes through, and later it seems that he could no longer care who was doing what to whom, mirrored in the ways he just lets the blows pummel his body. Nora Zehetner is able to also channel quite a bit from Mary Astor in her presence, and I couldn&#39;t help thinking of the end scene with Bogart sending Astor&#39;s character to hell in the somewhat overreaching explanation that was meant to clarify everything. As a matter of fact, that&#39;s probably the only part I could have done without: there is too much explaining going on from Hewitt&#39;s character, and BRICK would have benefited more from leaving things as they were. But, it&#39;s a great film, and Rian Johnson is someone who&#39;s very, very good.
  47. I thought it was hard for me to understand this movie- I needed assistance from others to know how the story was uncurling. However, I think it still had a strong plot; the modelling of the characters unconsciously makes the viewer get immersed in the plot- as they seem perfect, but they all have a flaw that gives them a sense of closeness to us, and also causes the story itself to leave a mysterious lingering aftertaste. The awesome angles of many of the shots really contribute to the overall mood of the movie- especially how they transisted many of the angles was perfect- no shots seemed out of place, all fitting together in harmony. So, what I am trying to say is, you may need to see the movie a few times over if you want to get to know the story well, but the screening and distinctive mood makes this whole movie a piece of art- it will satistify your eyes throughout the whole movie how many times you watch it!
  48. "Sensational" is the word for Joseph Gordon-Levitt (equally striking in Mysterious Skin), who stars as Brendan, the teen outsider who becomes a budding Bogart.
  49. The book Brendan is seen reading when waiting for Emily to appear was supposed to be William Goldings Lord of the Flies, but due to a clearance issue using that cover, the actual book in the scene is a disguised copy of As I Lay Dying, by William Faulkner. You can access the original novella, as well as the script, via the following link...<br/><br/>http://www.rcjohnso.com/BrickScript.html It&#39;s called &#39;The Sun, Whose Rays Are All Ablaze&#39;, written by W. S. Gilbert, from the comic opera &#39;The Mikado&#39;. Lyrics below...<br/><br/>The sun, whose rays Are all ablaze With ever-living glory, Does not deny His majesty He scorns to tell a story! He don&#39;t exclaim, &quot;I blush for shame, So kindly be indulgent.&quot; But, fierce and bold, In fiery gold, He glories all effulgent! I mean to rule the earth, As he the sky We really know our worth, The sun and I! I mean to rule the earth, As he the sky We really know our worth, The sun and I! Observe his flame, That placid dame, The moon&#39;s Celestial Highness; There&#39;s not a trace Upon her face Of diffidence or shyness: She borrows light That, through the night, Mankind may all acclaim her! And, truth to tell, She lights up well, So I, for one, don&#39;t blame her! Ah, pray make no mistake, We are not shy; We&#39;re very wide awake, The moon and I! Ah, pray make no mistake, We are not shy; We&#39;re very wide awake, The moon and I!<br/><br/>Laura&#39;s version a5c7b9f00b
