### Campaign Setting

**The campaign takes place in a modified Forgotten Realms setting.**

Most towns have an Adventurer’s Guild within them. Any resident of this world can post quests to an Adventurer’s Guild, and then registered adventurers are able to pick up the quests and receive a promised reward upon successful completion. The Adventurer’s Guild acts a mediator for these transactions as well as a general information & gathering hub for adventurers.

You wish to register as a new adventurer at the Adventurer’s Guild in the city hub of Neverwinter. Unfortunately, the Neverwinter Adventurer’s Guild has suspended all new adventurer registration due to an emergency situation. This requires all hands on deck and they simply do not have time to deal with the registration or quests for new adventurers. Most new recruits are told to simply wait an indefinite amount of time to register.

Despite this, a Neverwinter guild receptionist recognizes a high potential in each of you, and makes a special exception. She gathers you together, insists you party together, and assigns you a quest even without going through the official registration process.

The quest is to escort a caravan from Neverwinter to the town of Phandalin. The quest comes from a dwarf in Neverwinter, Gundren Rockseeker, who is currently already in Phandalin. He needs his supplies transported safely as the road commonly sees goblin and bandit ambushes. Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar, to attend to business in the town while the characters follow with the supplies.

The guild receptionist discloses that goblin ambushes have increased in frequency along the Triboar Trail, causing a lot of trouble for both Neverwinter and Phandalin, as it's interfering with trade along the route. The Guild is receiving too many supply escort requests to fulfill these days, and would be indebted to you if you could determine the cause of the ambushes.

Finally, she gives the party a letter of recommendation, instructing you to bring this to the Phandalin Adventurer’s Guild once you arrive. They should have the time to officially register you there.
