This movie has little connection with the 1932 original. It does, however, have lifted footage (tinted to more-or-less match the color), including obvious footage of Weissmuller's vine-swinging. Miller is not once called Tarzan in the movie, and his yell is also lifted Weissmuller. The elephants who wreck the pygmy village are lifted/tinted from the original, but the "pygmies" (real in the original) were kids from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. Costumes are left over from "King Solomon's Mines" so that more stock footage could be lifted. And the crocodile fight is taken from "Tarzan and his Mate"
Rather than go to the unnecessary trouble and expense of hiring actors nd shooting lots of new footage to make his film, producer Al Zimbalist cast Denny Miller , a UCLA basketball star with no acting experience, as Tarzan....then,larded the film with as much stock jungle footage from the 1950 film &quot;king solomans mines&quot; as he could. And when that ran out, he used footage from the original 1932 classic &quot;tarzan the ape man&quot; starring Johnny Weissmuller.<br/><br/>of course there was the small problem that Zimbalist&#39;s film was filmed in color and weissmullers was in black and white...but zimbaslist got around that by having the black and white footage tinted to make it appear as if it had been filmed in Technicolor, like the rest of the movie. but it didn&#39;t. it didn&#39;t even look like denny miller. in one scene you can actually see johnny weissmullers face clearly as he fights a crocodile.<br/><br/>What little footage zimbalist did bother to flm was awful.in one important action sequence, real footage of an animal trainer dressed as Tarzan wrestling with a live leapard was combined with shots of miller wrestling with a large stuffed animal complete with close ups of its face, plastic fangs, button eyes and all!<br/><br/>bad bad bad bad bad
This is a dreadful film. It&#39;s not even bad enough to be amusing. I heartily agree with all the previous reviewers, but what does really surprise me is that some of them received poor marks: Two out of five and four out of nine? What do people expect when they read a review? A load of garbage or someone&#39;s honest opinion? Okay, so here&#39;s my contribution: <br/><br/>In my opinion, this seems to be a Jewish update of &quot;Tarzan&quot;, complete with a Jewish heroine who knows the Old Testament backwards and would rather die rich than muck around in the jungle. That&#39;s certainly a novel approach and I&#39;m not knocking it. Cheetah is disposed of rather early in the piece when Jane&#39;s dad shoots the chimp dead when she is clowning around. And there are a few other surprises in store for unwary viewers, including the fact that, despite the film&#39;s title, Tarzan himself has such a small role. In order of importance, the main characters are Jane, Jane&#39;s dad, the dad&#39;s friend, the dad&#39;s friend&#39;s friend, and last and least, Tarzan.<br/><br/>Production values are certainly resourceful: Obvious travelogue cut- ins and even tinted black-and-white footage from earlier Tarzan movies that are no longer protected by copyright. Yes, Johnny Weissmuller rides again, including his underwater fight with the crocodile. <br/><br/>I could go on, but, all in all, this is a fascinatingly inept entry of really awful film-making. One thing for sure, it&#39;s never dull. For all the wrong reasons, I should give it a six or seven, but that wouldn&#39;t be honest. Maybe I shouldn&#39;t rate it at all?
