- Cores
- As the elite soldiers of the Empire's military, the Legionairres' base armor already makes them nearly unstoppable. As criminal syndicates on the
- outer fringes of the Empire gained power during the Ilnai Dynasty to the point of being able to field their own elite aerial soldiers, imperial scientists
- were forced to invent new ways to improve the Legionairres beyond simple armor or weaponry improvements. Large amounts of funding was dedicated to nearly
- anyone who claimed to have an idea. The resulting hodge-podge of inventions left hundreds on the cutting room floor before a few cores were ultimately
- chosen to be put into production.
- Overdrive
- As the first core to be produced, the Overdrive core was also the simplest. Borrowing compression technology from warp drives, the core
- distorts space-time grotesquely with gravitational fields. Despite best attempts to shrink the technology further, the compressors stored within
- the core itself require the assistance of the suit's coils to create the initial distortion. Because of the nature of compressors, they cannot
- go below a certain threshold lest the bubble collapse. Unfortunately for Legionairres, that minimum threshold is well above the comfort level of
- armor, let alone fleshy humans. Even the healthiest of humans can only survive for a few seconds while using the core. Thankfully however,
- because of how maneuverable they are in this form, they seldom have to endure this torture for long. Additionally, because the coils effectively
- take on a SCRAMjet-like funnel structure in Overdrive, there is a minimum speed, lest the funnel and thus bubble collapse.
- Because of the limitations in bubble size, Sentinel armor was never able to use the Overdrive core as the gravitational tides on the
- boundary of the bubble would tear its extremeties apart. Nearly a decade after the invention of the original Ovedrive core, Instant Overdrive was
- invented as a way to circumvent this problem. Instead of focusing on sustained distortion, the design team behind what became known as iOD focused
- on creating a larger bubble for a shorter period. By using the more numerous coils in the wings of the Sentinel creating a space-time pulse prior
- to the core attempting to establish a stable bubble. As a result, Sentinels are able to accelerate themselves to high speed very rapidly and since
- the fall of the Empire, this core has become even more useful as it allows physical ramming of Legionairres serving enemy nobles.
- Regeneration
- Due to a series of lawsuits, all files regarding the Regeneration core have been sealed.
- WARP
- Although warp engines lasted as the dominant interstellar drive for centuries (and still are for transit outside of known space), wormhole
- generators have taken over "local" traffic. By building jump gates at planets and larger ones at stars, humans have been able to have instantaneous
- travel to wherever there happens to be an endpoint. Unlike these jump gates however, the WARP core (despite its name) is able to create both start
- and destination wormhole points. This is done by keeping the start position wherever the user currently is and by having a singularity follow the
- Legionairre through time. Because there is such limited room on Legionairre armor, the stabilizers that would orginarily exist on jump gates
- have been shrunken, leading to inefficient cooling systems which causes jumping to damage certain components of the core. If not repaired between
- uses, repeated use can ultimately lead to failure of the system and the user becoming stuck inside the wormhole. It is not known whether or not
- one can surrive a collapsing wormhole, though no one has ever made contact following a collapse.
- "Warp" stands for Wormhole Attentuation and Retention Protocol.
- Shield
- Like the Overdrive core before it, the Shield core was also quite simple and easy to produce. For centuries prior, starships already
- carried shield arrays to protect themselves during combat from enemy fire, so the adaptation of such an old technology for personal use wasn't
- difficult for imperial scientists. Like the flight coils, the Shield core distorts space-time around the user, though instead of being used for
- flight, it is used to rend or deflect incoming fire. Because the system works best when it can detect incoming fire, the Shield core does not work
- particularly well against messenger particle weapons such as the X-91 Laser Rifle and must rely instead on passive disruption and hope that the
- spatial distortion sufficiently distorts the incoming beam so as to be harmless.
- Boost
- As long as the Legion has existed, its soldiers have used explosive weapons to launch themselves at high speed a la "rocket jumping." For
- those in pursuit of high-speed enemies a common tactic has been to throw a grenade behind oneself and fire a rocket at it to use the shockwave to
- accelerate and give chase. Eventually "boost" grenades were created which created low velocity but high decibel shockwaves to push players more
- effectively. Because boost grenades were expensive to produce, the idea of a boost core was one of the first out of the mouths of Ilnai-age
- imperial scientists.
- Like the grenade by the same name, it was idealized as a system that could allow a user extremely high acceleration from a standstill.
- Conveniently, just a decade prior, "EVal" drives had been successfully created after nearly 80 years of speculation by a small group of scientists.
- The exact mechanisms behind the Boost core are not known as EVal drives are classified and most were lost after the fall. Speculation has it that
- they allow outright manipulation of mass-energy within space-time and can edit any property at a given time. Despite the fact that this violates
- multiple laws of physics, this is the dominant theory as to how the Boost core functions.
- Dodge
- A newer core than the WARP, the Dodge core would have likely had the name of its predecessor, though WARP was already well-used as a term
- leaving the engineers creating the core few other options, though they eventually settled on "Dodge" due to the core's ability to allow a user to
- easily evade incoming fire. This is done by using a miniaturized version of interstellar Alcubierre drives to create a small one-way tunnel from
- the Legionairre to the endpoint. At first when it was deployed to put down the Kora Insurrection, multiple Legionairres failed to realize that
- despite its appearance, it does not teleport the user and attempted to use it to pass through walls, resulting in fatal impact injuries. This
- led to fewer purchase orders by the Empire afterwards and was never again produced in high amounts.
- In many ways, the functionality of the Dodge core is similar to that of Instant Overdrive, though Overdrive's wake caused by the coil
- funnel is not present in the Dodge core, causing most heavy units to refuse to use it. Since the Fall however, some have taken to using it more
- because it allows much more control than the more popular iOD when used by an expert.
- It is also a common myth among superstitious Legionairres that the "ghost" left by the use of the Dodge core is actually the soul of the
- user. Clearly this is not the case as it is simply severely distorted and red-shifted light from the Legionairre while in transit, though
- because only the most battle-hardened and professional Legionairres are capable of mastering this core, the appearance of lacking a soul or
- heart may not necessarily be unfounded. It simply is for other reasons than the onlookers believe.
- Engineer
- Of all cores that have gone into production, few have been so useful as the Engineer core. While technically speaking anyone could
- theoretically drop a turret or other deployable, the electrical signatures of the devices and their control frequency would be rapidly picked
- up by orbiting capital ships, allowing for pinpoint bombardment for neutralization or hacking attacks to seize control of the device itself.
- As a result, the majority of the Engineer core is not in fact storage for deployables but rather an EM field generator to block the signature of
- the deployable devices. While range is not an issue for the device, in an attempt to be as efficient as possible, only the area directly above
- the devices is barricaded, though the thickness of the barrier is entirely dependent on the energy output of the device.
- The secondary component of the Engineer core is a store of nanite packs which refresh themselves from any available reaction mass. To
- construct a deployable, the corresponding instructions are given to a nanite pack which is then placed by the Legionairre and allowed to form
- the intended device.
- Stabilizer
- During the Fall, various nobles ordered the the Stabilizer core in mass production due to its supreme ability to allow a single
- Legionairre to control combat in a given area by zoning enemies. Because of this, rival nobles ordered the destruction of all factories that
- produced the core and had their forces focus fire on any enemies utilizing this. As such, it is no longer in production and most if not all
- units have been destroyed or at minimum damaged beyond repair. Recently a legend has cropped up that the combined efforts of two nobles may
- result in production of this core again.
- Like many other cores, this functions by the distortion of space-time, though obviously this core does so in a different mechanism than
- the others. Instsead of attempting to create a new distortion as the others do, the Stabilizer core functions by stabilizing the universe's
- attempt to seal off the afflicted areas after coils pass through them. By preventing the area from undergoing the sealing process, the distortion
- becomes lethal to anyone who comes in contact with it due to radiation and the deletion of any mass-energy that attempts to pass through it.
