  1. The standard Crystal route as of November 2015 takes the Goldenrod center to restore PP for Radio Tower 1 until the heal house. The following route removes the center in favor of the Lighthouse Ether. To do this, you need to teach Strength over Bite, thus keeping Headbutt.
  2.
  3. The basic steps:
  4. 1. Fight Donald and Teru at some point before the first Goldenrod shopping trip (usually after Whitney)
  5. 2. Teach Ice Punch on the Irwin pause buffer/Repel menu
  6. > Use on his L10 Voltorb if you hit him
  7. 3. Conserve Headbutts whenever possible against the Kimono Girls
  8. > Water Gun Flareon (does slightly less than half)
  9. > Bite Espeon (does slightly less than half at L22; about half at L23-24)
  10. > Ice Punch Espeon (does about 1/3 at L23-24)
  11. > Bite Vaporeon (does about 1/6)
  12. > Ice Punch Jolteon (does about 1/3 at L23-24)
  13. 4. Conserve Headbutts in the Lighthouse
  14. > If L30 for Marill, get Strength early (use on Growlithes and Marill to guarantee OHKOs)
  15. > Otherwise, Surf the Growlithes if you have enough Surf PP
  16. 5. On the Kaylee pause buffer menu, teach Strength over Bite
  17. 6. Use Headbutts to flinch Pokemon in Chuck's gym. There are 4 or 5 useful flinches here, but you'll often have 1-3 Headbutts, so order of priority is important. The order depends on your Attack DV, whether you outspeed Hitmonlee and your level for Poliwrath. Assuming you have 15 DV Attack, you outspeed Hitmonlee and you have L31 for Poliwrath, your order is Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Primeape, Machoke. If you have 5-11 DV Attack, it's optimal to X Attack twice on Chuck, so Poliwrath becomes the top priority, while Hitmonchan and Machoke become the lowest priorities.
  18. 7. If you hit Benjamin, you'll lose time to super-effective text (must Ice Punch Geodude to OHKO, and may need to Ice Punch Diglett if low on Strengths)
  19. 8. Follow the PP route below for Rocket Hideout
  20. 9. Consider taking the Goldenrod center if you took a lot of damage and/or hit Douglas, especially if you lost a Surf to Protect. If you take the center, follow the original Etherless PP route, but modify it slightly for Headbutt (yes, it works out).
  21. 10. If you're skipping the center, get the Lighthouse Ether
  22. 11. Use the Ether on Surf on the menu where you Fly to Goldenrod (if late Poliwag, use on the second Ice Path repel menu instead)
  23. 12. Follow the PP route below for Radio Tower 1 through the heal house
  24. > Teach Slash over Headbutt as soon as you get it
  25. > Save 1 Ice Punch PP in one of the following ways:
  26. - Strength the L23 Koffing in Radio Tower 1 (only if L38)
  27. - Surf the second-to-last L30 Koffing, then Strength the L24 Muk (only if Attack DV > Special DV)
  28. - Slash the L36 Golbat
  29. - Return the L35 Houndoom (only if good Attack or L45)
  30. > Teach Return over Slash on the underground Escape Rope menu (unless you planned to Slash Golbat AND have enough PP)
