She insisted, of course, on accompanying me to a celebration one evening outside the town. A wedding; a town trader's handsome son was marrying a sloe-eyed girl from a southern family. Showers of sparks from the campfire drifted on the warm air, and I listened to the music. It was eerie, like nothing I had heard before. The air shivered under the singer's voice. 'The Long Song brings the Other Place closer,' said the Princess in my ear. 'See the Shaman, over there in his trance?'
