- As you know, Hassan REALLY likes his camels. You might say he likes them better than people. Some would assume he was orphaned and raised by camels, like Romulus and Remus of old. This is nowhere near the truth. Hassan just doesn’t trust people. He’s a merchant from the desert, where the only law enforcement is a draconic empire that doesn’t care- he’s been swindled, cheated, stabbed and left for dead on the sand dunes by sentient creatures. Camels don’t pull that sort of crap. But it goes even farther than that.
- His people are one of the oldest tribes in the land, nomadic caravans of druids and rangers who worship the old gods. Their legends state that in a time before the world was as it is, they wandered lost in a truly featureless land before coming upon a train of camels walking towards an unknown point. The tribe followed these strange creatures and eventually found themselves reaching an oasis. Seeing that these creatures knew the land, the tribe's leader decided to follow the camels farther. Legend says that following the twisting path of this ancient camel train is the reason for the tribe’s winding routes through the desert. In short, to Hassan and his nomadic tribesmen, camels are animals that represent persistence, mercy, and survival. They are gifts from the old gods- not animals to be given out lightly.
- For Hassan’s specific backstory, he is one of many traders that the caravan relies on for goods they can’t make or acquire themselves- metalwork, vegetables, etc. They sell rugs, rare spices, information, medicine, maps, and to truly worthy people, camels. Hassan's search for someone worthy of purchasing one of his camels isn't about money- it's about finding a man he can really, truly trust.
