  1. **** MIKE TYSON FAQ ****
  2.
  3. The purpose of this FAQ is to answer questions regarding world record attempts for speed against Mike Tyson.
  4.
  5. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL TIME?
  6. 2:12.xx or less. There are a large number of luck variables making an "optimal time" impossible to determine. Performance is more important to me than time for this fight. A perfect performance should at worst result in a 2:14.xx and I would be quite happy with that even though it would not be the record.
  7.
  8. DO YOU USE THE IN GAME TIMER OR REAL TIME?
  9. In game timer is used. It is a more accurate measurement since it stops during knockdowns/referee counting.
  10.
  11. IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MIKE TYSON AND MR. DREAM?
  12. No. They function identically. There are also no other significant version differences for speedrunning purposes.
  13.
  14. WHY ARE YOU DELAYING BEFORE PUNCHING SOMETIMES?
  15. Delaying the perfect amount of time will result in your punch dealing additional damage. You have a 1 frame window (one 60th of a second) to punch. Too early and you will deal less damage, too late and you will be blocked. These precise punches are often called "FRAME PERFECT."
  16.
  17. HOW MANY FRAME PERFECT PUNCHES DO YOU HAVE TO LAND TO GET THE RECORD?
  18. At least 21, possibly more depending on other factors. A minimum of 9 in phase 1, 5 in phase 2, and 7 in phase 3.
  19.
  20. HOW MUCH LUCK, OR "RNG" IS INVOLVED IN THIS FIGHT?
  21. A lot of luck is involved, but this fight is still more about execution. Tyson has variable delays between the majority of his punches. His longest delay is 8 seconds which only occurs after he throws two rights followed by two lefts. I do not know specific odds for this fight, there are too many variables to make reasonable calculations that are meaningful. Tyson can do a 3 second delay in phase 3 that could completely ruin a record attempt. The record can still be obtained if this delay occurs, but it makes it much less likely.
  22.
  23. HOW FAST DO YOU HAVE TO KNOCK TYSON DOWN TO BE ON WORLD RECORD PACE?
  24. The absolute latest Tyson can go down is a low 0:58. You need Tyson to throw 6 uppercuts in the second phase before the clock reaches 1:30 at which time he will switch to his hooks. If you get Tyson down at 0:55 or 0:56 you will likely get 6 uppercuts in phase 2. At 0:57 he will usually throw 6 uppercuts, but not always. The phase 2 knockdown time is not quite as relevant since he is going to be throwing hooks the entire time in phase 3.
  25.
  26. HOW DO REFILLS/DAMAGE WORK IN THIS FIGHT?
  27. Each fighter including Tyson begins with 96 health. Provided Little Mac has full health Tyson will get up from the first knockdown with 56 health. He will get up with 40 health after the 2nd knockdown. These values are non-random, but if you have less than full health they become random.
  28.
  29. Damage works like this: When Tyson throws an uppercut if you retaliate with the same hand it deals 1 while the opposite hand deals 5 damage. After the first counter punch if you punch before the perfect frame you will deal 1 damage and the perfect frame will deal 5 damage. That means you can deal 10 damage per uppercut if you are frame perfect. You have a single punch margin of error since missing will mean you dealt 6 and you need 96, not 100. 10 uppercuts and he should be down. Once he begins his hooks the hand with which you counter does not have any effect. If you counter on the perfect frame it will deal 5 damage (8 frame perfect hits deal 40). If you are not frame perfect you will punch twice and each punch deals 2 damage for a total of 4 damage. At 4 damage per hook it would take 20 punches countering 10 hooks which will take 52 - 55 seconds depending on delays.
  30.
  31. WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME ON MIKE TYSON?
  32. The commonly accepted record is 2:13.xx by Matt Turk.
  33.
  34. WHY CAN'T I FIND A VIDEO OF THE WORLD RECORD?
  35. There is no video of this because Turk did not always record his runs. He started running this game before the advent of YouTube, Speed Demos Archive, and other sites that make video recording relevant.
  36.
  37. The fastest time that is recorded is 2:17.xx by Zallard1 which can be found on his YouTube channel of the same name.
  38.
  39. WHAT IS AN "IL"?
  40. IL stands for "Individual Level" which is a term coined by the speedrunning community to identify completion of a specific portion of a game but not the entire game. Games like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! are perfect for ILs since each fight is a separate entity and there is an in-game timer. Racing games are another genre where ILs are commonly competed on.
  41.
  42. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE TIMES BEING WRITTEN AS 2:13.XX?
  43. In the first 13 fights there is a decimal system and you get to see your time with decimals after winning a fight. When you beat Tyson you do not get to see the decimals it just goes straight to the ending.
  44.
  45. WHAT IS THE WORLD RECORD FOR ENTERING THE CODE TO TYSON?
  46. Seriously?
