  1. ===============================================Crash 3 105% speedrun FAQ:===============================================
  2.
  3. Q: What are you playing on?
  4. A: PLAYSTATION 2 using the original PS1 disc. Playstation 2 first-party controller.
  5.
  6. Q: What is 105%? Why not 100%?
  7. A: 105% is the '100% category' of this game, collecting all 105 obtainables -- 25 crystals, 30 time relics, 45 gems, and 5 powerups -- that the game has to offer. Two secret levels: Hot Coco and Eggipus Rex, both have a gem and a relic, which contribute 4% to the percentage over 100. the 105th % is technically the gem Coco gives you in the main warp room after obtaining at least all golds in the time trials.

  9. Q: How are these items collected?
  10. A: Crystals are basically awarded for level completion: not hidden, somewhat close to the end of the 25 main levels. Time relics are obtained by grabbing the clock within the level (which will not appear before collecting the Crystal, if there is one) and finishing within a certain game-time. Gems can be from breaking all boxes, taking an alternate or secret route, or coming in first place (level 28 and 30).
  11.
  12. Q: Do you need Platinum relics/ankhs?
  13. A: Kind of just answered it above, but again, each obtainable is worth 1%, so there's no difference between sapphire, gold, or platinum. The only reason at all that Gold is required is for the Coco gem. Platinum relics make no difference.
  14.
  15. Q: Why are you skipping time crates?!
  16. A: At this point I'm almost repeating myself with the answers, but I get these questions separately all the time, so. Breaking a crate is almost always out of the way, even if only by a (couple) frame(s). Real-time > game-time, so don't be fooled into thinking you're saving time if your game-clock is lower. Once again, all you need is gold, so I will often ignore time crates, since they're completely irrelevant on a lot of levels. Gold time standards are usually not difficult.
  17.
  18. Q: Why are you doing the levels in this specific order?
  19. A: Mainly in regards to what I refer to as 'mask management.' All I mean by that is having double masks when needed, which is usually entering a platforming level. (This is for invincibility, which speeds you up.) Time trial clocks take away masks, certain levels use mask-abuses (intentional hits), and there are other various things that need to be taken into consideration. Sometimes the level order may look unnecessarily complicated, as though I had routed it just to stray from the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and so on" but it definitely saves time having a proper level order.
  20.
  21. Q: Aren't the running shoes the fastest? Or Sliding then spinning?
  22. A: Yes, but you don't get that powerup until you've defeated Cortex. And it's only marginally faster than the main technique used: Neutral Slide Jump (NSJ), done by letting go of the directional input during a slide just before jumping, which, yes, is the fastest. Sorry to your childhood knowledge (I think we all found slide-spinning).
  23.
  24. Q: What is the world record?
  25. A: Unless stated otherwise, it's the finish-time located at the bottom of my splits [2:11:07 currently].
  26.
  27. Q: Why do you hit 'New Game' without starting the timer or having the intention to start a run (you just quit back to the main menu right away)?
  28. A: If I turn the console on, for the first 'New Game' I hit, there will be additional black screen loading. So my delay on the timer would not match, therefore, the timer would not start on time. This extra delay will also happen after hitting New Game if the demo mode has rolled while waiting on the main menu.
  29.
  30. Q: What about that practice/strat finding session you had? Weren't you going to make a video?
  31. A: Why yes, it's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v57h7hSKcrE
  32.
  33. Q: What is your final goal for the category?
  34. A: [revised to] 2:08, wouldn't be happy without it now.
