Where we last left our story

What little sleep she had in those passing hours was restless, broken up by pacing and whispering to herself that familiar three-word mantra that seemed to fail her amidst all that was happening around her.

She may still hold the title of Arendelle’s queen but Elsa was acutely aware of the precarious situation she was in. She was, for all intents and purposes, a powerless figurehead and it was an unsettling feeling to have no control over what would happen to herself let alone her kingdom.

Father, be with me now, help me be strong.

The clang of the door opening startled her. Feeling less than certain whether or not she is ready to take that walk back to her room she nods, swallowing the lump that’s formed in her throat.

“Thank you, Hans, for everything you’ve done today. I know it can’t have been easy to keep my head attached to my shoulders with things as they are. I’m grateful.”

She has no idea how hard it was "You're welcome" He smiles, throwing a cape around her shoulders, unaware that she didn't feel cold but it was also to cover her "We're taking you to your rooms, to have a bath, change and relax, feed you if you're hungry"

He explains to her what's going to happen now "We need to work on damage control on the ice now if we can't make it go away for now"

"I understand," she nods and relinquishes control to him trusting that it's what's best for not just herself but for Arendelle. "Please tell them I never meant for any of this to happen. I'm not a witch like the Duke of Weselton claims. "

When they're alone, Hans locks the door and removes her shackles, giving her room to breathe, hoping this wouldn't bring another storm upon them

"I don't know what you are, why you can control ice and snow at will or whether that's a blessing or a curse, that's entirely up to you" He looks at her, scrutinizing for her reaction, hoping her behavior hinted at her feelings of her 'gift'


"What I do know, is that you need help, that you're just a girl, that you're scared, that we need to fix this, and that I want to fix it with you,  protect you; but that can only if you work with me"

She rubs her sore wrists tenderly and meets his gaze when he speaks of her magic with such neutrality it was almost believable to her that he wasn't as afraid of it as everyone else was. "I don't know how to fix it and they're not going to forgive me and trust me as their Queen if I can't bring the summer back." He offers protecting she fears he cannot give.

"The Duke of Weseton has called for my head and I didn't hear anyone disagreeing. My parents were right, they think I'm some kind of monster."(edited)

"Yes, monster or not you're a Queen and he's a duke" He uses his hands to indicate the duke is below her station "He's over reaching, but can you blame him? with that height that's all the man can do" He tries to make a joke

 "In all seriousness, leave politics to me" He sighs "We will find a way to make this work within a political frame, there is always a way"

Then he faces her "And we will have to find a way of knowing how your magic works.. even if its by trial and error; you've lived with this all your life, you have to know something about it, some sort of experiment"

"I know my emotions are tied to it and it's caused pain and suffering because of that. I've avoided and suppressed it all of my life, that's what I was told to do because living openly with it nearly took Anna's life. " Experimenting with it was too dangerous. She's never given the thought a chance. "My gloves help me contain it."

"That makes no sense" He sighs  "Maybe we need to experiment"

"I don't know how they work, only that they do. If you could just bring me a pair from my room I can show you. I don't know who to undo all of this but they'll keep it from getting worse."

Hans nods, asking to of the valet that was accompanying them "Do as she says, bring, whatever she needs"
Hans sat on the bed he strokes his chin, thinking. "I wonder.. who told you the gloves worked?" Hans was following a hutch. The gloves were more emotional than real.(edited)

Staring out the window with a listlessness in her eyes Elsa recalls the moment she was gifted the collection of glovers she has so desperately believed in for all these years.  "My father gave them to me when I was little. He said they'll help me control it and they have. When I wear them it's like there's a barrier between my magic and the world."

Hans has a sudden flashback.

"She took off your glove..."
Anna, she had pulled Elsa's glove during the coronation party
"That's what pushed you to the edge, didn't it?"(edited)

"...Yes. It was more than that but when she exposed me like that in front of everyone I panicked."
She had let her emotions control her and now they're all suffering.

"Have you ever had that dream.." He tries to relate to her "You're on the way to being tutored and you pass a hallway full of people and they laugh at you, and you discover you're naked" That's what happened to her, she was bared, exposed. Heck were she naked she wouldn't be as scared(edited)

Hans looks at the window and just turns back to her "I fully believe the biggest problem here is that you were not familiar through no fault of your own, obviously, Yet, I find it extremely hard to believe that no one in this castle knew about your powers except your family. You can't exactly hide a frozen window or frozen anything, in the middle of july. If you lack control of it and your emotions as a full grown woman I'd bet my life you sure as hell didn't have it as a child, So.." He sighs "Your staff knew"
"And they would of aided you, in any way they could had. That's their life calling Elsa, just as it is yours to rule"
"The problem here is that you didn't have anyone to help you, you were sent to fend for your own in a war nobody even told you you were allowed to fight back at"

"How does a child fight?" she asks, her tone becoming more broken. "If they knew those that did kept it quiet because the faces outside these doors aren't of people who knew about this. My Mother kept a tight lock on her secrets and my Father played a long and did what he could to protect me. No one came in this room but them for years. When I was older and could suppress it for longer periods staff was allowed in. Kai and Gerda. Father trusted them but I love lost control when they came around."

She has no idea how deeply her words resonated with Hans.

How does a child fight? triggered memories of abuse, of neglect, or sharp words piercing his skin all the way through his soul in a way sword never could, the constant repetition of his father's words that he'd never amount to anything, the mockery, the humiliation, alienation, hurt.

How does a child fight? she asks, Hans mentally answers with everything he's got. That's why I'm here today.

And if his mind had already been made that she needed protection now, he was sure he had found something more valuable, a protégée. Someone to entrust with his wisdom, his knowledge and most importantly his loyalty.

"You've got yourself an ally in me" He says "And neither of us all children anymore, I don't care how a child fights - although for the record they kick scream and bite, they're nasty creatures if they choose to be- yet, the case at hand is how will you fight back"
"Because if you have no desire to fight back then, efforts to do so on my part might be a little less than futile"
"We need to know the terrain, know your magic, experiment"
"We can work from our knowns to our unknowns"
"Until we can narrow a solution to our.. predicament"
"One big unknown is how far the ice reaches? have scouts sent out by horse through sea and land"
"check for supplies - We're figthing this winter and I don't know about you; but I hate to lose"

"You realize to do all of this I'll have to concede power to you." It's only now occurred to her that she has no regent, no one she can trust to take care of Arendelle while she is unable to. "To accomplish everything you want you'll need to be more than a visiting political alliance. Arendelle needs a Lord Chancellor who can manage a crisis like this and there is no one qualified enough in my eyes here today -- it's been a source of contention for weeks." She takes his hands and smiles sadly. "I don't want this to be where my story ends."

“I came to Arendelle to marry you” He confesses
“I knew little of you, just a few pages of a registrar”
“And yet, I longed for.. kinship” he stands and locks the door “I came to Arendelle to escape my family that had continually hurt me and told me I would never amount to something big, I thought of all people someone like you - someone who’s been alone- all these years would understand” As he speaks he takes off his shirt and undershirt his body is covered in scars “some of these are part of my trade as a sailor but the older ones are part of the literal injuries my brothers and father inflicted on me”
“And I thought maybe if I became king one day.. they’ll respect me”
“I realize now there are bigger demons than mine”
“And I disclose this because down the road I want nothing to come between us”
“I mean it when I say I understand you now and I want to protect you”

Elsa's hand raises to touch the scars on his chest as he speaks and her heart palpitates with every word he says resonating deep inside of her. They move slowly to touch his face and cup it in her palms. She looks into his eyes and tears well there, turning to frost upon her cheeks.

Gingerly and with shaky breath her lips ghost against his, brushing against them slowly as her hand falls to rest over his heart. "I give you my heart to hold and protect."

Hans allows her to come close but the kiss takes him off guard, still he closes his eyes, pulls her closer deepens the kiss

He loses himself in it in hopes she'll too. Lose herself on it.

And when he's breathless against her lips he smiles lingering closer and bringing her back to a reality she might not realise "You're touching me"
He touches her hand, it's cold "Your hands are bare"

Eyes moving from his to her palm agaist his bare chest without any glove between them Elsa let's herself have this moment.

"I haven't touched anyone in...in a very long time." She looks at him again, breaths uneven. Her fingers wrap around his hand. "You feel safe to touch. You're not afraid of me."

"Nor are you of me" Hans closes his eyes and tucked her in the crook of his neck
"Let me help you" he encourages her to touch him, his chest, his waist he kisses the top of her head "Never be afraid to touch me, even when you feel afraid of everything else"

"You're the first to see me as I am not be afraid of me. No one has seen me beneath all this. It terrifies me that you can feel this close to a person and then one day they don't look at you the same. I saw it in people's eyes when Anna fought with me. I stopped being their Queen. I was something else."

She nuzzles his neck and feels filled with warmth. Its been so long since she's been embraced, held, protected.

"I'm tired of being scared, of running, I'm so tired."

"Then don't," He says as he takes her lips one more time, slowly backing her into the bed that's behind them. His thought process was of touching her, of showing her exactly how unafraid he was of the act of it and in itself.

To demonstrate, he saw the woman beneath it all, and he wasn't afraid.

He helps her lie down and then he stops just a hairsbreadth away "I want to keep touching you, kissing you. Everywhere"

Elsa blinks like a doe unsure of whether or not to take that next risky step forward. Her heartbeat pounds fast against her chest so hard she can feel it, feel the magic within her veins thrumming beneath the surface.

Following the rush of blood to her head being in his arms gives her she swallows back fear and allows herself to fall into that kiss with a passion she hadn't known she possessed.

"Then don't stop." She whispers against his skin.

When he wakes up, he smiles basking in the afterglow, white Arendelle fights winter he’s taken something precious, that’s perhaps the key to solving all of their problems, even his.

In sleep Elsa dreams of a time when she wasn't a prisoner of her own fears. When she and Anna were close as can be, playing together. When she wakes there are tears in her eyes as she breathes rapidly, not from the sadness of the dream but that it was a dream at all.

Reality is not so pleasant.

She remembers where she is and how she is there, naked lying beside a man she had given everything she had to on the hope it was right and perhaps meant to be.

What are the chances their lives would entangle like this if it wasn't?

She sees him wake and smile to himself, she smiles back though, small and unsure.

"Hi," she says.

How strange it feels to be without the barrier of clothes and gloves she uses to keep others crom getting close, and he has managed to become the closest of all.

Tears frost on her cheek and it’s made more apparent at her smile, the icy trails broke and Hans gingerly cleaned her cheeks

“Hi,” his look is of concern now.

“Are you ok?” He asks fearing that the emotion that governs her is regret.

Perhaps he asked for too much, too fast, he took advantage of her vulnerability and yet. In the moment it felt right, he did so without malice(edited)

"No," she whispers into his neck, "I'm afraid...I can't give you what you want. This, what we are now can't be a reality. I could hurt you and lose you like I've lost Anna. I can never give you what you deserve." The lump in her throat makes her mouth dry.
"You should be with someone who can give you all of themselves. A family. Someone like Anna who can love you. She does love you. I can't let myself."
He opened his heart to her and she let herself use him as a balm knowing she can't be what he needs.

Hans pulls her closer. “I want you, with what you can and cannot give” he reassures her.

“You’re the one that is here with me, you’re the one that I shared last night with not Anna”
“So please, don’t be afraid” he kisses her forehead
“You’ve been all this time without hurting me. I have faith this can be repeated”

Covering herself with the sheets Elsa sits up, guilt and uncertainty weighing on her heart.

"You let her think you love her and I took you from her last night like I have taken everything else from her. You asked her to marry you two days ago how can your heart change in one night?"

“It cannot” He says “But the truth is, I didn’t want to marry Anna, before today I didn’t even knew Anna existed — but when I saw you reject her, I thought of my own brothers and I didn’t want to relieve this” he touched his scars
“I could go to my ship, I still have the registrars, it says you like rocks because your father used to bring them to you”

“My heart has set on you”

Maybe if he had, maybe if she knew him then things would be different now, her life has been built on maybes and wants she can never have yet she clings to them even now. “Because I was” He says “You’re an heiress, I’m the thirteenth” he sighs like the answer should be obvious “Status does matter in the world we live in, as much was made known to me by your staff when I did write the first time”
“Gurda I think was the name, she informed me that at the moment only were receiving letters from second children and above”

"They want an heir," she explains, "Privy council wants an heir from me from a Husband with considerable standing. I  forced my Kingdom into a corner long before this winter and without an advantageous marriage, it will only get worse. Fourteen years of small trade a scraping by. Their pockets are lighter than they've ever been, people are struggling. My coronation was their hope things could change. Trouble is that I can't give whomever I chose what they're going to want in return for the burden of inheriting my problems."

He nods “Yes, I did all those things, but I will break it off. Even if I don’t get to stay with you” he tells her “Elsa, I asked her to marry me Because I didn’t wanted to stay in the isles, if I didn’t have a motive to stay back, I would have to return, but if you allow me to stay..”
“I don’t feel anything for Anna and for breaking her heart, I’m sorry”
“I don’t intend to stay with her, and I don’t want to leave your side."
