A father and son go on the run, pursued by the government and a cult drawn to the child's special powers.
Alton Meyer is a boy unlike any other in the world with bizarrely powerful abilities and strange weaknesses. In the middle of the night, his father, Roy, spirits him away from the isolated cult that practically worships him and is determined to regain him at all costs. At the same time, Alton's abilities have been noticed by the US government as well and they are equally insistent on getting to the bottom of this mystery with Paul Sevier of the National Security Agency leading the Federal pursuit with his own questions. These rival hunts force father and son into a desperate run towards a looming date with destiny that could change everything.
Director Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon team up again for another interesting flick. This one focused on the love of a father for his son no matter how strange he is. Joel Edgerton and Adam Driver turn in equally enjoyable performances. I gave it a 7/10 and recommend checking it out at home next time you are in the mood for something different.
May contain some plot/theme spoilers.<br/><br/>Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) Alf would be too obvious, likes to listen to the radio...in his head. He repeats what he hears thus &quot;speaking in tongues&quot; which appeals to &quot;The Ranch&quot; a Texas cult built upon Alton&#39;s spewing including classified information which draws due diligent attention. Roy (Michael Shannon), a member of the group, absconds with his own child (adopted by the pastor) with the aide of a friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton) a policeman who is not a religious person. Mom (Kirsten Dunst) left the compound 2 years ago.<br/><br/>Seems Alton has places to go, like Frank Lloyd Wright heaven, which appears near Pascagoula Mississippi?<br/><br/>Now how this seemingly alien baby had human parents and had to live in the dark as an infant wasn&#39;t discussed in the film. This is a film which attempts to combine religion, spirituality and UFO sightings into one &quot;real&quot; explanation, although I liked &quot;Altergeist&quot; string theory better.<br/><br/>The story was interesting even if the characters tilted to the stiff side and the dialogue mostly reeked as in the case of most serious sci-fi films where the script writer was too engrossed in the me-so-clever plot as to take a minute to create memorable characters.<br/><br/>Guide: Could be viewed as going against the grain of religion. Minor PG swearing. No sex or nudity.
Nichols’ impressively restrained yet limitlessly imaginative fourth feature takes its energy from an ensemble of characters who hold fast to their convictions, even though their beliefs remain shrouded in mystery for much of the journey.
