- Visiting the flocks
- The Princess offered to show me the best pastures her people had for their sheep and goats. It would give me a chance to ask more about the Silver Tree...
- =======================================================================================================================================
- 'The pastures are beautiful. You can make some drawings, perhaps.'
- 'The windy steppe is mostly scrub and rock, but there are places that provide good grazing, and the Mongol people are excellent shepherds...' Out on the plain, the Princess slowed her horse to a trot. 'I do trust you,' she told me. 'I think it is your foreignness that draws me to you. You must be sympathetic to my dear William's plight?'
- Perhaps I gave something away, for she hastened to correct herself. 'William means a great deal to my mother and father, of course,' she said. 'That is why I want to ensure his safety. If anything should happen to threaten the Empire, who would look after its prisoners?'
- I questioned her. What threats to the Empire? Did she think I was one? Was she trying to warn me of other spies? She would not elaborate.
