  1. Let’s say you’re listening to foreign music, in a language you don’t know. Maybe it’d be something like Spanish salsa, Korean pop, or German industrial. For this example, I’ll pick Spanish salsa. Now let’s say you think the track sounds pretty good. It appeals to you in some way, like it’s catchy or it gives you a good feeling. Specifically, we’ll assume the song you’re listening to feels “cohesive”. The sounds of the instruments and Spanish vocals work together nicely.
  2. Now let’s say you took the Spanish singer, and traded them for an American speaking English. They have a completely different voice, inflections, tone, and the lyrics don’t quite match up with the beat. Is that something you think you’d rather listen to?

  4. Or maybe forget all that, and as another example, say you wanted to watch a highly acclaimed French film, but you don’t know French. People close to you love it, and they say you’ll most likely enjoy it. They briefly explain the plot to you, and tell you about some characters you’d love. It sounds good! But there’s a small catch.
  5. The movie only has two language tracks, so you have to pick one: French audio with English subtitles, or an English dub. The dub was done by an American company, which they hired for way a way cheaper price than they paid the original French actors (of course). Furthermore, it seems like the English dub changes the tones of the characters, sometimes even modifying their lines, and that ends up changing the movie’s character writing for the worse.
  6. Which version of the movie would you pick? If you had to watch this movie, would you rather see it in the original French form, or the English dub?

  8. Now for the final example, let’s say you’re starting up a new video game. It was developed in Japan (by Japanese people), and it looks pretty fun to you. The gameplay is exactly the type of thing you like, and you’ve heard the story is really good. Some of the characters seem like they might be cool, and you have some friends that like it, so you take the plunge and try it out. You know the game will have a lot of cutscenes, and the cutscenes have a lot of talking in them. When you start up the game, it asks you what language the characters should speak—English, or Japanese?

  10. If you didn’t want the vocalist changed in a Spanish song,
  11. and you didn’t want the actors changed in a French film,
  12. then why do you want them changed in a Japanese game?
