- Character Sheet Template:
- Name: Brother Ragnvald (though he accepts brother Reynold)
- Race: Terran
- Age: 47
- Gender: Male
- Sexual Orientation: The first step to enlightenment is casting off the desires of the flesh.
- Occupation: Monk, therapist, gardener, general laborer.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Absolute Purity: Ragnvald's greatest strength is his purity of heart. He is, in a word, uncorruptable. He is a shining beacon of peace and tranquility wherever he goes. Because of this, children and small animals flock to him, and Evil influences run in terror from his goodwill to all things. Demons attempting to possess him burst into flames, ghosts who haunt him find only an ear willing to listen to all their problems.
- Ascetic Training: In seeking perfection of the mind and spirit, he has also sought perfection of the body- his balance is impeccable (to the point he can run on water), he's extremely agile (able to leap into the treetops), he almost never tires from physical labor, and he has incredible skill with martial arts, though he only ever uses defensive styles designed to tire out his foes and disarm them. Most people assume there is magic involved, but Ragnvald assures them that this is only the result of a simple diet and intense training.
- Equipment: A string of prayer beads, a brazier, a backpack with a bedroll and various medicines, and the clothes on his back. He's actually quite wealthy from all the chores and oddjobs he does, but usually gives what he doesn't need for food to charity.
- Appearance: Seven feet tall, and almost as wide, Ragnvald is a mountain of well-toned muscle, tending towards the "strongman" rather than "bodybuilder" look. After all, the reason he has gotten so strong is to help others rather than show off. His skin is a sickly greenish shade, owing to a skin disorder inherited from his mother. He's not very attractive, either- bulgy eyes, a large nose, and big, round ears make him look almost like an ape.
- Personality: Eternally calm and serene, Ragnvald is seldom angry. He abstains from material possessions, and is always in search of people in need. After all, the monks raised him as a proper nihilist. According to them, life is hell, we're all gonna die and you can't fight fate... but why not make each others' lives worthwhile and enjoyable in the meantime? According to him, fate and destiny are either nonexistent or inconsequential- he's going to help people either way. Life is for living and people should find meaning in creating the world they'll leave behind.
- Backstory: Forty-five years ago, a village was terrorized by a ferocious ogre. Stealing vegetables from gardens, scaring animals, breaking out of the traps the villagers built to catch him, and damaging doors and windows as he stole food and valuables. These were the reasons that the villagers turned to the priest of the nearby monastery, a group of peaceful monks wise in the ways of the world. The head monk stayed in the village one night, trailing the beast to its lair, ready to find out just what kind of threat the village faced... and finding an enormous toddler (roughly the size of a six-year-old) trying to eat one of the stolen vases, huddled up against the corpse of what must have been his mother, dead from what looked like wolf bites. He sighed, knowing what had to be done, and how much work it was going to take. After all, the monastery took in anyone who needed it, and this large child DEFINITELY needed it. He told the villagers of the "ogress" in the cave, and the villagers actually looked saddened. Had they known it was a child, they would have just left a box of food and toys for him.
- As he grew, the "ogre child," now named Ragnvald, learned to control his strength quickly- he didn't like hurting the other children of the village, and liked hurting the monks who raised him even less. However, he took to the disciplined lifestyle of a monk very well, becoming a respected part of the monastery and using his tremendous strength to help around the village. He grew, and grew, and eventually became a man.
- Twenty years ago, a teenager from the nearby village broke into the temple. Two grown men she had an unrequited crush on had told her that the were not, in fact, attracted to her- physically or romantically. They suggested waiting until she matured a bit, or found someone her own age. Taking this as a rejection from those who had once loved her (however erroneous that sentiment was), the girl decided she would become evil. Being too cowardly to attack something that could defend itself, but too stubborn and whiny to grow up and admit she was wrong, the girl made her way to the quarters of the children the temple housed, hoping to prove her "evilness" and make the men regret abandoning their love for her by killing children.
- Ragnvald, however, slept in the children's quarters in case the little ones needed anything in the night. And he asked the girl why she was there. Telling a tale of forbidden love abandoned and how it drove her to evil, Ragnvald pointed out that both the men were happily married and three times her age. The girl replied that age didn't matter and proceeded to make a lunge for a sleeping toddler... before Ragnvald caught her by the scruff of her neck, threw her to the ground, and sat on her. Though he tried to reason with her for three days, not eating or sleeping the whole time, and getting help from the other monks, the girl was insistent that once he rose she'd slaughter everyone in the temple, starting with the children, and everyone in the village to make the men regret what they'd done. Seeing that the girl's madness barred her way to redemption, Ragnvald sighed. Grabbing her by the scruff of her neck once again, he picked her up off the ground and stood, making a massive windup. Tears in his eyes, he apologized for what he was about to do... and flung her from the mountaintop, over the temple walls. Searchers found her broken body at the foot of the mountain, having died on impact. But Ragnvald had still taken a life. Though even the head monk said that the killing was justified, that Ragnvald had done a great service to the children and townspeople, he was inconsolable. He left the monastery, vowing to walk the world and make amends for taking a life- even that of an insane murderous 14 year old.
- A few weeks ago, he received word that the head monk who raised him is growing old and wishes to speak with him- the problem being that Ragnvald has no idea where he is, or how to get home. But for his family, he's going to figure it out.
