  2. 'At the entrance of the Khan's great palace stands a prodigious tall tree, marvellously fashioned entirely of gleaming silver, blazing in the sunlight...'

  6. 'At its base, four massive silver lions face the points of the compass'
  7. 'They are fountains, pouring forth the white, fermented milk of mares that these people prefer to drink. Four gilded serpents are entwined in the tree's bright branches, and from their mouths too pour forth liqours, each one different...'

  9. Thus began my description of the grand fountain that stood in the Palace court. When I wrote those words, I knew nothing of the history of the silver tree, or the shocking circumstances of its construction, or the loves and lives that were entwined in its intricate metal branches. But gazing upon it that first time, I made it my business to find out its secrets.
