  1. In the beginning, before the world as it is now existed, the goddess Star came upon a great great chaos in a far away sea, and took this chaos with her to her home. She shaped this chaos into an endless canvas to craft the world, and for the purposes of crafting this world she created several beings separate from herself to inhabit this void, lesser deities to aid in her creation of the world. The first, and most cherished of these deities, she named Mon, and tasked her with advising in the creation of the world. Eventually, the world was complete - rife with beautiful sights and simple life - plants, fish, beasts, insects, fungus, and all other beings of life. Mon assumed the world was finished in her creator, who she admired so deeply's infinite wisdom and perfection. However, Star decided to create one last things, inspired by the example of another like her from the infinite sea. She created a race of beings with the minds of deities, but weakness and frailty of traditional life, and named it Humanity, and let it upon the earth. Mon had a deep love - beyond that of simple admiration - for her creator, and so she did not protest the decision. But eventually, as Star came to care more and more for humanity and spent less and less of her time and wisdom on Mon, Mon began to grow envious. Eventually, almost out of nowhere, Mon decided to rebel against Stal, her envy apparently having consumed her so, and several of her sister gods came to aid her. She sought to destroy the monkeys that had stolen her beloved's affections, but in the end Mon and her allies were defeated, albeit barely, and damned with banishment to a darkness far from the world of light and life she and Star had created. But she fought with the last of her strength, railing against the chains, the curses in her heart driving her, pouring them into her broken sword - which she cast down onto the earth, her curses and rage to be inflicted on it - and the living beings which dwelled on its surface.

  3. The curse, saturating the very essence of the world, born from hatred and corruption in the image of Mon herself, soon came to actuate its black influence on the world, creating creatures from warped chance and tainted causality - beings which took on the feminine form of Mon and were possessed with an inclination towards destruction, chaos, and evil, diverse in appearance, activities, manifestation, and even intelligence. They were called Monsters, and existed to serve Mon's curse - to foul humanity with terror and anguish, and in doing so break the seals keeping Mon in the unseen darkness, allowing her to once more rampage upon all creation in pursuit of her beloved Star. Whether they served this goal directly or had their own dark ambitions which spread its influence by coincidence, the Monsters ravaged the world and people within it, murdering, enslaving, devouring, and even corrupting some into new Monsters, it seemed all was lost. But when the worst and greatest of the Monsters planned to call down the moon itself into the earth to destroy it and all humanity, Star used her remaining strength - sapped from her war with Mon - to protect the world from the moon's descent, leading only a select few shards to crash into the earth - enough to wipe out the majority of humans and monsters on the planet, but not enough to truly end it and free Mon. Star thus fell into a deep sleep, and knowing their God could no longer protect them, what remained of humanity took up arms to face the Monsters themselves, while the remaining Monsters, unchanged, continued their activities of carnage and chaos - on a much smaller scale of course. Several centuries later, the world is now once more thick with humans and Monsters, and the battle is ongoing. Humans innovate with methods of technology and magic to face the hordes, while Monsters grow stronger through alliances and evolution of new forms of darkness. The war - divided as it is - is ongoing, and the victor is not sure.

  5. These days, the war with Monstrosity is still dire, and horrors and tragedy befall many human societies across the globe, and the division of humanity seems to be weakening its chances in the battle compared to the Monsters, who are slowly over time becoming less and less divided and more unified, especially in the depths of the savage continent of Oroban, created from the shards of the moon that were cast to the earth - a land inhabited purely by Monsters. In an effort to help humanity fight against the threat of Monstrosity, the illustrious mage-professor Ann Miriala decided to research as many Monsters as she could, and use this knowledge to create a book to be spread through the world in hopes of helping people learn how to efficiently fight Monsters. In the aftermath of this book's publication, several independent Monster Hunting organizations decided to unify in hopes of spreading the knowledge. Eventually, even the backwater region of Nikels to the far far northwest of Viela, the book's place of origin, had its Monster Hunting organization join this union, and in turn, it eventually was given the book... or well, a staggeringly small few copies of it. In the end, it was only given to a few members of each individual squad of Monster Hunters - mostly young people, as it's a profession where one is unlikely to last long. One such copy was given to the young aspiring mage Quela, who had heard of the book and became a fan of its author before the chance to even read the damn thing. Now she has it... and she and her squadmates are finally out of training, and are expected to fight actual monsters. As the only member with access to the knowledge of the book, it becomes her job to try and help her friends succeed in destroying the enemies of humanity... or more accurately, surviving them, as she and her allies come to learn just how ugly and horrifying their task really is, and how dangerous the threats they face are.
