  1. I live with my dad [52M] and my brother [14M] btw.

  3. So basically during the middle of COVID, my mom discovered her love of acrylic painting, and she’s been going crazy (I don’t mean this negatively at all btw) with creating all sorts of pieces that she’s super proud of. She’s turned one of the home offices (which no one was ever using in 23 years I’ve been in that house) into her own little art studio. I’m happy my mom found a new hobby, but I’m concerned that this new hobby puts my dad (who had heart problems), brother and me in danger.

  5. The reason I say this is because one of the steps in her acrylic painting processes is to pour this epoxy resin material over the finished product to create a hard/glossy coating (at least that’s how I understand it). It essentially makes it look nice and more presentable. The problem is that this process produces a lot of fumes that smell really…bad. When I first smelled it I thought it was mold or something, until I realized that it was fumes from that epoxy stuff she uses.

  7. But anyway, the “danger” comes from the fact that she only does this process at night when everyone is upstairs. Because my mom does this process at night (cuz she’s busy with other stuff during the day), she doesn’t wanna open any windows in the room she’s working in cuz opening the windows at 11 pm scares her I guess. The end result is that the entire house smells like these epoxy resin fumes, and the rest of us sit there inhaling it for a couple of hours several times a week while she does her art projects because there’s absolutely no ventilation (my dad is stingy too so we can’t even turn on the AC at our house until everyone is in bed).

  9. What infuriates me is that I noticed she even wears a heavy duty mask while doing this process, which shows me that the fumes should not be inhaled and she doesn’t wanna inhale the fumes herself. Yet she can’t bother making sure the house is well-ventilated for the rest of us while doing this?? I’ve confronted her about this before, but she says that because the AC is off (which in her mind prevents the “fumes” from spreading to the rest of the house) and we’re in different rooms (despite the fact that I can strongly smell it when I’m on the second floor in the opposite corner of the house) we should be safe. She also gets really aggressive and starts using my anxiety/OCD against me when bringing this up. What do I do? Any artists here that can also shine light on how dangerous this stuff really is??

  11. TLDR: I worry my mom’s “art process” puts my health and that of the rest of my family in danger
