  1. Sorry, @Anchovy-Aideron and @Thera-Scanner: I just couldn't
  2. wait to kick off the return of Fitting Friday, so I started
  3. early. Hope you won't be mad at me.
  4.
  5. -----
  6.
  7. Reading EvE history, I've always been fascinated by the era
  8. of the spider-tanked carrier. What's a "spider tank", some
  9. of the new players may ask? The basic idea is to get a bunch
  10. of ships with good Remote Repairer and Remote Capacitor
  11. Transfer (RCT) module bonuses and, rather than having them
  12. act as support for an existing fleet, just let them *be the
  13. fleet.* I want to be part of that, but (a) I can't fly
  14. capital ships and (b) spider-tanked carriers really aren't a
  15. thing since a bunch of CCP changes to reduce their
  16. overpowerededness in this role.
  17.
  18. I will admit to working on what a spider-tanked Velator
  19. fleet would look like. That's how much I want this.
  20.
  21. Anyway, I got to thinking that Signal Cartel needs a
  22. spider-tanked Hugsfleet™. Following that train of thought
  23. down its dubious tracks, the obvious choice seemed to be
  24. logistic cruisers. Normally, subcapital logi ships wouldn't
  25. make a good spider-tanked fleet, since it's so hard to fit
  26. them for damage while still keeping their repair abilities
  27. up. But *We Are Signal Cartel.* Festival launchers require
  28. no fitting resources to speak of.
  29.
  30. So the next question was how much tank I could get out of
  31. fleeted logi cruisers. The answer turned out to be
  32. devastatingly small. Maybe I'm missing something, but it
  33. sure looks like a good local tank will totally trump
  34. anything that the remote reppers on a reasonable-sized fleet
  35. of logi cruisers can tank. A few hundred EHP per ship per
  36. second, is all. If you could keep that from several ships on
  37. one target it starts to look like something, but dealing
  38. with target-switching and multi-targeting was going to
  39. require a bigger fleet of logi cruisers than I believed
  40. Signal Cartel could field. After all, logi cruisers are
  41. expensive high-skill ships, and we'd just be in them for the
  42. love.
  43.
  44. While looking at some logi fits on
  45. [O.smium](http://o.smium.org), though, I noticed that a logi
  46. ship can mount a wicked local tank. It looked like maybe
  47. there was another way! What if I gave up on the remote
  48. reppers and concentrated on the RCTs? I could build an
  49. impressive tank indeed if capacitor use was no longer an
  50. issue.
  51.
  52. (An aside for the unfamiliar: RCTs are "speshul". You can
  53. transfer some of your capacitor to another ship, but *that
  54. ship receives much more capacitor than you consume.* Thus,
  55. if two ships with RCTs apply them to each other, they both
  56. get a potentially very large capacitor bonus using nothing
  57. but their high slots.)
  58.
  59. Thus was born the Hugs Spider Basilisk. I chose a local
  60. shield active tank (using Shield Booster modules to repair
  61. many hitpoints per second locally) because it left the low
  62. slots free for other needed fittings, and I needed the RCT
  63. bonus that only two of the logistics carriers have. The
  64. Basilisk fit the bill. (I also tried some other shield tank
  65. options, but none of them really worked out.)
  66.
  67. The Hugs Spider Basilisk turns out to be able to repair more
  68. than 2100 Effective Hit Points (EHP, a measure of damage
  69. repair including avoiding damage via resistances) per
  70. second. Let me say that again. 2100 EHP/s. Oh, and please
  71. shoot it with railguns. 2900 EHP/s against Antimatter.
  72.
  73. The Hugs Spider has a Mandatory Festival Launcher. It has an
  74. Electronic Counter Measures (ECM, "jamming" opponents from
  75. attaining target lock) module along with the usual ECM
  76. drones, to help it avoid damage and get away when the hugs
  77. are returned a bit too vigorously. It is *cap stable* in
  78. fleets of two or more, and has a *spare RCT* for unforeseen
  79. circumstances (e.g. application of Energy Neutralizers by
  80. the target of affections).
  81.
  82. The cost is pretty "reasonable" at 151M ISK of fittings on a
  83. 213M ISK hull. If price is no object, for 1B ISK total
  84. (pinkie to corner of mouth) the tank can be blinged up
  85. (Pithum C-Type Adaptive Invulnerability Fields, Gist X-Type
  86. EM Ward Field, Co-Processor II, Multispectral ECM II) to an
  87. astounding 2900 EHP/s against uniform damage.
  88.
  89. This feels like a good fit.

  116.
  117. (A word about the Pith X-Type X-Large Shield Booster. At 67M
  118. ISK this is a ridiculously cheap module for what it is able
  119. to do. Honestly, every shield booster fit for cruisers or
  120. larger should be using this.)
  121.
  122. So what are the downsides? First, this is a high-skill
  123. super-tight fit. My engineering skills are pretty good, and
  124. yet this fit uses 99.31% of CPU and 99.58% of
  125. powergrid. Second, 364M ISK is still a lot of ISK for
  126. something that will almost certainly be welped sooner rather
  127. than later. Third, there's no propulsion module (Afterburner
  128. or Micro Warp Drive) so the escape plan depends entirely on
  129. being able to jam the opponent with ECM and warp out. A
  130. jam-resistant tackler is going to just hold the victim until
  131. enough firepower is brought to bear. Third, a jamming ship
  132. (Falcon, Blackbird, etc) can stop the RCTs from
  133. working. This leaves 10s of cap and then the tank just
  134. vanishes. Fourth, this ship has only 14600 EHP of
  135. actual shields. A very powerful "alpha strike" could blow
  136. through them like wet paper, rendering the fast local repair
  137. rate as moot as some analogy involving mootness. Finally,
  138. and importantly, the resists (against the four possible
  139. incoming damage types) aren't all that even. This ship
  140. handles "only" about 1500 EHP/s against EM damage and 1600
  141. EHP/s against explosive.
  142.
  143. Nonetheless, I'm eager to go Spider Hug someone. If it's
  144. possible within the limits of the Credo, a small idle
  145. gatecamp gang without ECM might be an ideal objet d'amour.
  146.
  147. But I'll need at least one partner...
  148.
  149. -----
  150.
  151. OK, shred away! I'll be disappointed if someone doesn't find
  152. a serious problem with or an easy improvement of this fit.
