- I know how weird this will sound, but here's what's happening. My(24F) boyfriend(28M) is addicted to using his hairdryer. He says it warms him and the sound of it is relaxing. He uses it for about hours every single day, not missing not even one. He sits on his chair and puts the hairdryer on his lap while he's doing other things like playing or watching videos, etc. He has been doing this since he was very young, since his older brother (40M) has been doing the same.
- So what's the problem? I'm living with him for a bit more than 1 year now and he always told me that if I take away his hairdryer, I'm taking away his life. I tried to be a respectful girlfriend and try to accept that it's something that he likes, the best I can.
- Last weeks this has started to bother me. I wake up in the morning and I love the morning silence, the birds singing, super haven-like... He wakes up, comes to the office and puts his hairdryer on (the house is small, we share the same office room). That super loud noise that takes away the heaven-like mood.
- Most days I'm teleworking, trying to focus and he's there with the hairdryer on. When I have a video call I have to ask him to stop, so I can talk and sometimes I even have to shout because we can't hear eachother. I started spending more time in the living room to get away from this noise, close all doors... But you can still hear it. He goes to work late, and I feel bad for saying that I feel relaxed when he's gone, simply because I'm not going to listen that hairdryer. But then he comes back and first thing he does: sits down with the hairdryer on. If I'm watching tv, even with doors closed I have to put it much louder because I can't listen properly (and he's in the office) I tried using my headphones with loud music but it bothers me if I have to spend my day with my headphones on. Sometimes I just don't want to listen to music or anything.
- As I'm writing this, I'm hearing the sound of the hairdryer and it's getting on my nerves. I want to accept this, since he likes it, and I know if I ask him to stop or use it less, he will get upset and I don't want that. But damn.... Imagine living in a world where there is no silence, only a constant annoying neighbor doing renovations nextdoor. Only difference is that it's a hairdryer.
- I'm sorry for the long text but I would like to know what you would all do. Is this acceptable? Is this normal? Am I on the right to want some silence or does that make me a boring person? I don't know what to think, this is starting to drive me crazy.
- TL;DR My boyfriend is addicted to his hairdryer and it's starting to bother me. I don't know how to approach the situation without making him upset.
