  2. I had spent time complimenting the Emperor's artistic tastes. I hoped to get access to his treasure houses, to draw and describe some of the items at least.

  7. 'The Mongol people are nomadic, spending much of the year away from the city. Yet they're wealthy as any European court. They have to guard their treasures, and they have had to come to terms with being a people that has treasures to guard...'

  9. By the time I arrived, the Mongol people were well used to the contradictions of being nomads in charge of an empire. The Khan was quick, eager even, to show me their riches. Vast gongs from Cathay; silver urns from Siberia; serene golden gods from India. I made some sketches, thinking that an enemy would be mad not to strike the Palace first, in the summer when the court was all away on the mountain...
