- He found a coffee shop half a block away from the rendezvous area. Ethan sat there for two and a half hours, sipping coffee and hiding behind newspapers, all the while observing the newsstand, checking to see if anyone dropped packages of any kind in the trash receptable next to the bench; he scanned surrounding buildings for any unusual activity in the windows, such as placement of listening cones. Ethan unobtrusively worked his way to the roof of the tallest building on the street and from there scouted over other rooftops for listening posts and snipers.
- He mentally logged the cars that parked on the street, noting vans, trucks, or any other vehicles that could conceal people. By the time 1 P.M. came around, Ethan felt confident he was not walking into a trap. At least, not an obvious one.
