- Marsalis bellows, snapping out a tongue with reverse-barbed teeth. She beats the tiles with her tail, shattering them so violently that a piece of shrapnel bounces off Kamran’s cheek. He cringes away from the raging alien, yet Becker keeps moving toward Noah, unarmed.

- “Help me!” Noah calls, reaching out as if he’s sinking in quicksand. Marsalis puts fresh wounds on his back, but nothing lethal. The creature is bent on tormenting him, or he’d already be dead. In warning, Marsalis lets loose a wild hiss and smashes her tail into the ground directly in front of the approaching marine, burying the barb a full hand’s width into the rock. The buzzing skull plates fill the concourse with the drone of a locust plague.
