>In WWII, a soldier known only as The Boss almost singlehandedly won the war for the allies
>The Boss gives birth to a son, Adam, on the battlefield
>The Boss later trains John, a soldier, to be her protoge, and helps found the spy group FOX, alongside british intelligence agent Major Tom.
>Illuminati type dudes funded the allies in WWII. Almost all of them are dead. One of their sons, a soviet general named Volgin, has access to their funds, and wants to take over the world.
>David, now under the codename Naked Snake is sent along with The Boss to find out what's up.
>The Boss turns on Snake
>Snake is rescued via helicopter, and is sent back to kill The Boss,
>Snake fights Colonel Ocelot, who is actually Adam.
>Turns out The Boss only joined Volgin because of Volgin firing an American nuke on Russian soil, and if she didn't join with him, it would have resulted in nuclear war.
>After killing Volgin, Snake still has to kill The Boss, a woman who is like a mother to him, in order to cover up mistakes by the US Government
>Ocelot has a mancrush (Maybe more) on Snake

In between MGS 3 and V
>Naked Snake earned the title of Big Boss because he killed the boss. For years, he denied he was as good as the Boss, and kept going by Naked Snake.
>Zero, Ocelot, Snake, and a few of their friends found a new Illuminati called The Patriots, with the goal of making a world the way The Boss would have wanted.
>Snake is convinced that world is one where Soldiers always have somewhere to go and fight
>Zero is convinced that world is one controlled by a shadow government
>Zero, worried Snake will betray him, clones Snake twice
>Snake says FUCK THIS, and leaves
>Snake appears years later in Central America, leading a mercenary group, along with his new friend Miller
>Zero tries to destroy Snake's organization

>Turns out that Zero had hired some other guy to help Snake on all his missions, that we didn't need to know about until now.
>This guy, Skullface, hates the west, english, and society for dominating his culture, and the culture of other third world shitholes.

>Skullface attacks Snake's merc base, killing nearly everyone. Notable survivors are Snake, Miller, Ocelot (Now allied with Snake), and a Pilot
>Snake goes into a coma, along with the Pilot
>Miller gets captured somewhere in Afghanistan
>Snake exits coma, makes up with Zero, who has been infected with a fatal Disease by Skullface
>Snake, Zero, and Ocelot make a plan to use brainwashing and plastic surgery to make the Pilot think he's Big Boss, and be a decoy, while Snake returns to the US.
>The pilot now goes by Venom Snake, or Big Boss, interchangeably
>Naked Snake only goes by Big Boss at this point.
>Venom isn't aware that there's another Big Boss in hiding.
>Venom wakes up, and rescues Miller in Afghanistan
>They make a merc group
>Turns out Skullface plans on using bioweapons to make anyone who speaks english die or some shit
>Venom and friends stop him. Skullface Dies.
>They also meet Eli, one of Big Boss' clones, who's a 12 year old sociopath.
>Everyone, including Venom, finds out who Venom really is.
>Venom and Naked, both going by Big Boss, start to create their own military nation where they can create wars with whoever so they have something to do
>Miller, not only disgusted that Big Boss would do something like that to the Pilot, and lie to him about it, but also angry that Big Boss is now a total warmonger, decides he'll help one of his clones kill him one day.
>Ocelot plays double agent for Zero's organization, which after Zero goes comatose, is ran by computers that control everything
>Big Boss lets them exist, because they keep stability, allowing him to build his military nation

>The government wants Foxhound to stop the upstart military nation Outer Heaven, which is secretly ran by Big Boss.
>Big Boss sends his newest recruit, David, to investigate, under the code name Solid Snake
>David is another one of Big Boss' clones
>Snake finds that Outer Heaven has a superweapon nuke robot called Metal Gear
>Snake destroys Metal Gear
>Big Boss tells him to GTFO, and that he's ruining everything
>Snake finds Big Boss (Venom Snake) at the base, and kills him

Metal Gear 2
>Foxhound is now under the leadership of Solid Snake's friend, Colonel Campbell
>Turns out, Big Boss is alive (IE: Original Big Boss), and is making a new Outer Heaven somewhere in Russia
>To help him, Snake is getting intel from Miller (Who wants revenge)
>Snake finally defeats Big Boss, but even though he appears to die, he survives in a coma

MGS
>Snake quits Foxhound out of guilt he killed his father
>Turns out that Zero's Patriot AI's have gone insane
>Nobody can stop them
>On top of that, Eli, now under the name Liquid Snake, is a total crazy person who's after world domination
>Ocelot comes up with an absolutely insane plan to save the world from the AIs
>Ocelot props up Liquid Snake with Nukes, and a Metal Gear, in order to get Big Boss' body, which Liquid thinks he needs for super soldiers and to stop his quick aging (Like all clones)
>The Patriots naturally force the US government to get their best agent, Solid Snake, out of retirement to stop Liquid's Foxhound
>Ocelot is Liquid's right hand man, but is a double agent
>Ocelot also works for the President, another clone of Big Boss known as Solidus Snake, but is once again a triple agent, working for himself
>Ocelot kills Miller, and has Liquid pretend to be Miller on radio to give Solid info he needs
>It turns out the government isn't giving up Big Boss' body, which Ocelot needs for his big plan, so he goes with his backup and lets Solid kill Liquid

MGS2
>You play as Raiden
>Nothing in this game really happened, because Raiden was being mind controlled by the Patriots AI

MGS4
>Retcons all of MGS2 to actually happen
>Raiden is now a cyborg for some reason
>Patriots AI thinks that Peace = War, and makes the entire world dependent on war economy.
>Ocelot's plan, which is all sorts of level of impossibly stupid, plays out, which means he destroys the Patriots AI, resurrects Big Boss, brainwashes himself into thinking he's Liquid, and gives Solid Snake all the info and tools he needs to kill him.
>Snake is now really old because clones age fast. He does everything according to Ocelot's plan, unwittingly.
>Ocelot saves the world, and gets one last fight to the death against Snake, in which Snake kills Ocelot.
>Snake tries to kill himself, but is stopped by Big Boss
>Big Boss kills Zero (Who's a vegetable at this point)
>Snake and Big Boss share one last cigar
>Big Boss dies of a disease that is designed to kill him (Don't ask, it's retarded)
>Snake goes and lives out the 1 or 2 years he has left
