100%: Switching from JP to ENG

There are various version differences between the English and Japanese versions of Majora's Mask. Despite this, both versions are similar in speed when running the 100% category. We roughly estimate that the Japanese version could be approximately 1 minute faster than the English version with current RTA techniques. However, this comparison also assumes that both versions get postman HP first try which is not easy to do and many people lose a lot of time to JP postman (often to the point where English would have been faster than JP, although this is not always the case). Given how easy postman HP is on the English version, it is clear that English is more consistent while Japanese is optimally faster. Personally, I would recommend the Japanese version to people who can consistently do the postman HP in under 5 tries. With that said, the English version is still a perfectly viable version to run 100% on and runners should choose which one to run on based on personal preference. Listed below are some of the major things that someone should learn when switching from Japanese to English.



Cycle 2 Rupee Route Differences:

After bean grotto, do NOT get caught by guard, hover to front of palace and get the red rupee on the way.
get 20r in termina field and/or snowhead temple (there are 3 blue rupees next to the small key chest in the snowball)
get 30r before garo master in STT
get 20r next to the beamos in STT

Day 3 Clock Town: after buying 20 chus, do NOT enter trading post, you will buy a blue potion from the ikana scrub for 100r (you will get isg off of the ikana scrub when you talk to him instead of the sign). You will use the blue potion for stone mask (blue potion for stone mask only works on English, which is why JP is forced to use a red potion) and you will use fire arrows instead of a stick to light the torches in the graveyard

	*Inputs According to Eumeus: you shield turn left and punch holding R or target, then punch normally. ESS right for 1 frame. Put on the deku mask. Hold sidehop left. On the second frame of the sidehop, switch to holding straight up. Then on the first frame that the top of his head is below the ceiling, you release target. Switch to either holding nothing or down-right once you void.

Do Alternate STT Route (about same speed as other route, but fewer weirdshots/bombs needed; this route is good for both ENG and JP)

On English, the void in Snowhead will bring you close to the Snowhead owl. In 100% we can take advantage of this to save movement when rolling to the Snowhead owl to hit it.

After Beavers, SoDT storage will let you day reset while entering zora hall. This will make it Day 2. Since it is Day 2, you can do SoDT Pirate Cutscene skip which only works with Day -> Night Transitions (Night -> Day will not work). This saves about 18s over timestop pcs and about 26s over not doing pcs at all.

On the English version, it is still optimal to do the secret shrine aliens route, but it is recommended that you use the great fairy sword to jump slash the wart during its first phase because the English version does not have power crouch stabs and the timing for this aliens route is very strict.

If you choose to do this aliens route, then do Cycles 3 and 4 just as they are done in the JP route.

*Given the difficulty of the Secret Shrine Aliens route, runners can opt to do safer (and not much slower) alternate Cycle 3 and Cycle 4 routes.

Town Shooting Gallery is much easier on English as you are given more time to shoot all of the octos in each wave. Although these slower waves cause English to lose time compared to JP's faster waves, the leniency in this minigame allows for a "PERFECT" skip during the game you play for the HP. In order to reliably do this, shoot exactly one blue octo to slightly lower the minigame timer and when you shoot the 50th red octo, keep on holding B and you will skip the "PERFECT" that normally comes up after you complete the minigame. Shooting the blue octo saves about 2.5s because it shortens the timer on the minigame and the "PERFECT" skip itself saves an additional 7.5s.

Some Information on Weirdshots on English:

It is worth noting that there are differences between English and JP weirdshots. I will not give an in-depth explanation of all of the differences, but it is easier to crash weirdshots on English and some weirdshots look a bit different on English. Some people claim that it helps to hold up-left while doing weirdshots on English and that you should not pull hookshot on the frame the bomb explodes to help avoid crashing. I have not personally tested this, but it is worth exploring.

Extra Differences:

You cannot do sirloin superslide on English because Zora can only grab the sirloin on the Japanese version.

After you recoil flip past the ice block on the way to clock town, you cannot get a spike roll immediately. Instead, roll up-right off the edge and curve a spike roll up the slope into the mountain gossips grotto. Alternatively, you can just roll in from of you and start a spike roll off of the snow in front of the blue ramp, but this is a bit slower.

You're allowed to beat the Beavers in the beaver races (so good movement actually saves time on English)

You can freeze the waterfall in GBT immediately without having to time the position of the water wheel

You must do the Gyorg fight entirely with zora instead of GFS because English does not have power crouch stabs and thus you will be unable to get a quick kill (technically great deku sword works... but getting great deku sword is inconvenient for this category: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RbO04kgduA)

When entering dampe's house, you'll appear on the other side of the grave and have to walk down the stairs (JP saves a fair bit of time because of this)

You cannot do the Return A deku scrub strat for land title deed on English
