- *PROJECT X ZONE for 3DS: ITEMS GUIDE and FAQ*
- ***********************************************
- Version 2.4 (July 29th, 2013)
- Contents:
- 1. Item Guide
- 2. FAQ and Tips
- 3. New Game+ Information
- 4. OST Tracklists
- 5. Number Crunching
- -- <--> --
- This guide looks best in the Lucida Console fixed-width font.
- -- <--> --
- A few notes before we begin:
- Almost every enemy has a drop. If you defeat the optional bosses for items
- you'll get a fair amount of EXP as well, but it can be risky and take a
- very long time. Use this guide to decide if an item is worth the effort.
- I've personally scoured the map for every breakable in every chapter. I've
- also defeated all the enemies in each and every chapter, so it can be done.
- It's just painfully slow. By chapter 20 battles can take 2 hours or more to
- check everything.
- It also won't be long before "Wipe out all enemies" is the usual condition
- for winning. So not much is optional later on. This guide is a complete
- checklist to save you time and makes battles easier on top of it. No running
- around to find things when I did the work for you. New Game+ players can
- also benefit by knowing which chests to skip, since they contain the old
- lower class equipment.
- --
- About breakables:
- Breakables have nothing but healing items inside, if they give anything at
- all. The first times you'll find anything is Prologue 3, Chapter 16 and
- Chapter 20. After that they'll show up a few times, but overall feel free
- to ignore them or just use them as barricades instead. They are not worth
- any effort as even the best item you'll get from them is a 100% heal for a
- single unit only, which isn't very useful. Multi healing items are much
- better to have.

- position. New Game+ changes are listed, up to Chapter 29 currently.

- Boss: Drei - First Aid Spray [heal 100% HP, self]
- Boss: Due - Strange Syrup [full heal HP/ailments, all

- Strategy: You'll need a large stock of items, so hopefully you saved up.
- Now is the time to use them, especially if you don't plan on playing a New
- Game+. Many bosses inflict down, so countering is useless. Astaroth, Coco,
- Pursuer and Ciseaux do it most often. If you beat Eins and Drei before you
- break the shield all top floor bosses respawn. There may be conditions that
- I didn't come across, but I'll tell you what I know. Defeat everything in
- your way while going up. At the top you can ignore the new bosses and just
- get Kogoro to the shield. Upon doing so, more bosses and enemies appear and
- any defeated ones reappear. They also respawn once more when the final
- boss's HP gets under 100k. So defeating them is generally not a good idea
- unless you're trapped by their ZOC. They have no equipment (you can check
- their status in the free cursor mode). They drop strong healing items, but
- aren't worth the time and resources.
- For the final boss units with a range of 2 can only hit him directly on the
- middle of the front, behind or side, not the corners. Boss is immune to
- Stun and Down, his Multi's hit 4 units for 8k damage, whereas his counters
- do a whopping 10k. When his HP goes under 100k he tried to call
- more bosses but it seemed to fail, since I left them alive already. You
- can definitely use the smaller enemies to earn XP.
- It's best to have your mass of allies keep the bosses busy by defending
- while a few focus on Mr. Final Boss himself. Preferably those with counter
- cancels (Bahn, Zephyr, Toma, Neneko, X and Juri). I reloaded my quicksave
- and beat all of them on my second try but I took a ton more damage that way.
- I can also point out that even beating up every enemy and every boss the
- game threw at me, even in this level, that by the end of the game I still
- had 85% of my healing items saved. So if you play carefully nothing in the
- first playthrough is that hard at all.
- When you win New Game+ becomes available. The hidden options in the menu
- are unlocked and enemies and chests will offer some new items in the next
- playthrough.

- Tips and Strategy a Mini FAQ
- ======================= ======================
- Tips for beginners
- **************************
- -Critical hits give +5% exp and are done by timing your attack just before
- the enemy lands. Practice in the training room if you need to. I just think
- of some moves as "fast" and the others as "slow" to make it simpler.
- -The direction a unit is facing has no bearing on anything in the game.
- -The defend command also prevents any status changes. The full defend is
- generally not worth the XP cost, unless you will be KO'd otherwise.
- -If you get a game over you don't keep any exp. It's a complete reload.
- -There is no penalty for leaving an injured ally.
- -Use your quicksaves since they can be reloaded as many times as you want.
- -There is no optional content or way to replay a chapter. Thus this means
- there is no way to grind for exp. Defeating every enemy helps a little at
- the beginning, but soon becomes non-optional.
- -Use your items once you have 15+ of them, since the maximum is 20.
- -Do not depend on items. Save them for emergencies and use XP instead.
- -Learn who your healers are, write them down if you have to.
- -You can use Supers to defeat an enemy during a counter, if you have XP
- to spare. Later on it becomes quite inefficient though.
- -Defeat bosses with low level allies to boost their levels. This is very
- important. Use a Super for the +20% exp (stacks with items or skills) and
- try to get criticals. You can even press Start to end a battle to save a
- boss for later.
- -You can do a critical Super. They are instant, so press Y as soon as they
- land, not before like with normal attacks. They can bounce a bit and still
- make it in time. Training mode is good practice.
- -D on your attacks list (bottom screen) means Down, S = Stun, P = Poison.
- Higher TEC means a better chance of inflicting status changes on the enemy,
- but generally doesn't matter until you meet bosses that counter every hit.
- Down and Stun will prevent their counters.
- -You will start learning Multi Attacks around lv. 18. Frank and Chun-Li
- get theirs first. Watch your bottom screen for them.
- -You can press B to skip a Super or enemy boss counter.
- -Holding B also let's you run around on the map. Kinda useless though.
- --
- Basic strategy to win battles:
- Keep your HP high using XP, not items. After a battle you gain XP from Cross
- Hits, this means it's easy to waste them if you're near or over 100% XP all
- the time. Use up the extra beforehand by healing your allies. Rescuing
- is more costly than healing frequently.
- Always move in groups. Always. Stagger your units and keep surrounding the
- enemies so you have access to Support attacks. This keeps your XP high,
- which is crucial in keeping your HP high.
- --
- Best time to use Support/Solo:
- If going for XP: use the Solo right at the start, or to /finish/ breaking
- their guard (usually earlier is better than cutting it close). This will
- keep them on the ground and allow for the most Cross Hits. As the Solo
- finishes (2 or 3 seconds after the cut-in) trigger your Support. In the
- early parts of the game you'll need to use your Support sooner, before
- you run out of attacks. Supports and Solos on their own don't earn any XP.
- If you want exp./criticals, try to time your Supports/Solos when the
- enemy is being juggled in place by certain attacks. It's different for
- every pair, so the timing is tough. You can try to hit both a Support/Solo
- and your attack right before they land but this is a gamble as well.
- --
- How do status effects work?
- To explain a little better than the tutorial:
- Bind = no skills or items, no support when beside another unit. Can still
- respond (counter and defend).
- Stun = can't respond or act as a Support. Stunned enemies = can't counter,
- while you get auto guard break and critical first hit on them.
- Down (ally/enemy) = cannot counter. I've heard people say it cancels an
- enemy's turn, but I tested it and they still act after being hit with Down.
- Only their counter is canceled.
- --
- Any important/missable items?
- The most notable are:
- Chapter 3, the north chest: Survival Book.
- Chapter 8, far west chest: EXP Trainer.
- Chapter 24, bottom of the hill on the left: Sandra Soul.
- Chapter 27, west chest: Mega Booster.
- Chapter 29, Vile's Drill Arm (2nd battle).
- Chapter 35, bottom floor chest: Little Ryoma.
- Chapter 39, southwest: Hell King's Arm, southeast: Shintai Fragment
- Also, most of the New Game+ items will make a big difference in surviving
- the second playthrough. So always get those.
- --
- Do any exp. boosts stack together?
- I can confirm that skills (like Kogoro and Ichiro's +20% exp) do stack with
- critical hits and Supers.
- --
- Why is a move grayed out?
- Item effects cannot be combined with skills. Ex: Equipping the Survival Book
- on Kogoro gives +20% exp. Then Kogoro's skill Solo Training (+20% exp)
- cannot be used. They also cannot be cast twice on the same character, for
- example use Flynn's Range+2 on all allies, then Frank's Range+2 will be
- grayed out.
- --
- Who are the best healers?
- For Solos, Tron, since she has a 30% heal (ally) and a 50% XP/full HP
- rescue. For Pairs, Yuri has a 30% heal for ALL allies and Gemini gets the
- same skill later on. These moves are invaluable. Rescuing is very costly,
- so don't rely on it.
- --
- Is there a soft reset in the game?
- Yup, it's in the manual (Home > Manual). Hold L + R and press Start. Hurray!
- --
- Can you skip the story text?
- You can actually fast forward scenes by holding both R and A.
- --
- Advanced Tips
- *********************
- Chapters that have turn limits:
- Except for Chapter 17, 23 and 39, turn limits are lifted once you fulfill
- the requirements. In those chapters it will end once you do, preventing you
- from finishing up with bosses, enemies and chests.
- --
- What is ZOC, really? (Zone of Control)
- The tutorial doesn't explain this one that well. It means there is a
- one block radius around an enemy that you cannot get past. You can stop
- beside them but not continue on through. This is rarely a problem, but in
- Chapter 29 when you have a turn limit they prevent you from getting where
- you want to go by standing in the middle of a narrow passageway.
- Additionally, once you're beside an enemy they can sometimes keep you
- there. So just remember that enemies are sticky if you get close.
- --
- What is EP? (mentioned in the random effect skills)
- The enemy's version of XP. It's almost always full though. It allows them to
- use special unblockable attacks and counters.
- --
- What is TEC good for?
- Eventually bosses will counter you every time you attack, so a high TEC has
- a better chance of Down or Stunning them to prevent it. On that subject,
- Supers seem to have a good chance of inflicting status effects.
- --
- Who can cancel a counter?
- Bahn, Toma, Neneko, X, Zephyr and Juri via skills. Haken and Frank will
- auto-cancel them if under 50% HP. Cancelling is important with late game
- bosses. Chris learns a skill late in the game to cancel counters if over
- 50 XP.
- --
- Who are the best counterers?
- Bahn, Batsu and Chris. They learn HP over 50% = +1 attack during counter
- (doesn't stack with the Bajiquan Secret Scrolls item though). Early in the
- game Dante learns a +1 counter when over 50 XP.
- --
- Is turn order based on speed or is it random?
- Partially random. I reset a chapter a dozen times and saw different starting
- order every time. It varies by 3 or 4 positions each reload. So you may go
- 1st or 4th, to give a rough idea. This is likely why SPDx2 doesn't guarantee
- that you will go first.
- Another note on SPD: If someone like Ichiro has a slow speed, his Range+2
- buff will still affect the whole team, just not until their next turn. At
- first I thought if you cast it at the end of a "turn" only those who go
- after him would be affected and then when the turn ends the effect is gone.
- But no, the effect only wears off once a unit has made a move. So SPD is
- only good for making sure the unit will get a chance to attack before
- everyone else clears out the enemies by getting there first.
- --
- Should I use nullify block skills?
- I don't know why people suggest to, since it takes a maximum of 1 and a half
- attacks to break through any guard. You can usually do it for a loss of 7-10
- XP, which is more efficient than the skill's cost of 15 XP. You'll do less
- damage, but it's better to build up XP for Supers. Late in the game bosses
- will counter with a very hard hit every time you attack, so you have to do
- the most damage in the least amount of encounter.
- I would say only use it if you have 110+ XP and you have no healing or
- other useful skills. It's better to get used to opening every round with the
- unit's guard breaking move so you're always prepared. Practice in the
- Training mode, or check the chart in the Number Crunching section below.
- A somewhat easy way to remember them is when you see them dash through the
- enemy to behind them, that's usually their guard breaking move. With other
- characters it tends to be when they throw explosives.

- New Game+ Information
- *****************************
- What is unlocked when you beat the game?
- There are new sound options in the menu, allowing you to listen to the entire
- soundtrack and set the music for battles.
- --
- What is carried over in New Game+?
- The items you had when you beat the game (so saving some is a good idea)
- and your equipment. Levels start again at 1 and go up slower because you
- get less exp. Critical hits become almost necessary, especially since XP
- is easier to come by, thanks to all the 30% boost in XP gain accessories
- you'll have from the beginning.
- What's different in New Game+?
- Enemies are stronger. I'd hazard a guess and say by about 50%. Bosses counter
- almost every hit, starting already in the early chapters. They have more HP
- (I've seen an increase of about 25% so far) and do more damage. The contents
- of some chests have been changed. Some of the ones that used to contain
- healing items now contain equipment. I think, but am not sure, that they
- also drop more powerful items sometimes, such as Tiger Pancakes. This would
- explain why the game said after the ending that "enemies and chests" are
- different in the new game, since boss drops are the same as before.
- --
- Is a New Game+ harder or easier?
- Harder at first because of the lowered exp. Your HP are generally not high
- enough at the beginning either. But then it actually gets easier than the
- first game by Chapter 20. So feel free to use some of your saved items in
- the early chapters.
- --
- Will the New Game+ items list be complete?
- I might not finish it, but you can check the item section of the Japanese
- wiki for some if not all of the new items:
- http://www34.atwiki.jp/3dspxz/pages/62.html
- --
- Are there any /new/ new items in New Game++ (and beyond?)
- The first New Game+ has new items and that's it. After that it's all repeats
- of the 1st and 2nd set of items. There is no 3rd. The enemies' stats don't
- change either from 2nd to 3rd playthroughs. Thanks to SaydeWindsaur for
- confirming this.

- When to use these: get used to opening every battle with the unit's guard
- breaker whether you need it or not. That way you won't have to remember
- which one it is later on. Guard breakers are never their strongest moves
- anways, so they don't need criticals. The XP moves are for the rare cases
- when you want to repeat an attack rather than go for the +1 after using all
- of the others.
- --
- Multi attack strength:
- The units who can hit four squares away have the weakest attack. The ones
- with three for range are about 25-33% stronger. Akira and Jin can only hit
- two enemies in a very limited range but do about 200-225% damage. Ryu's an
- oddball in my game at least. He does about 175% damage with the same limit
- of two. Example:
- Chun-Li: 11k
- Gemini: 14k
- Ryu:: 20k
- Jin/Akira: 25k
- It helps to know if a Multi is strong enough to defeat enemies ahead of time
- or not. Also, if you look close Akira's Multi is rated B strength when it's
- clearly an S like Jin's. So maybe it's a little buggy. Ryu's is rated A, so
- I guess they didn't mean for all the two hitters to have super strength.
- Multi Attacks can be boosted with ATK+15% (like Sanger and Busujima). Other
- ATK boosts probably stack as well.
- Here's some more data to prove how it works. Taken from Chapter 40. Everyone
- was level 50 or 51, except X and Reiji at 52 and 53. Tested against bosses
- with DEF of 350 and 375, so DEF has no effect.
- Range 4:
- Chun-Li 13k
- Soma 13k
- Kite 13k
- Ichiro 14k
- Haken 14k
- X 14k
- Kurt 13k
- Range 3
- Kogoro 15k
- Frank 15k
- Reiji 17k (slightly higher level and it's, well, Reiji)
- Zephyr 16k
- Dante 16k
- Gemini 16k
- Yuri 15k
- KOS-MOS 16k
- Toma 16k
- Chris 16k
- Range 2:
- Ryu 23k (the oddball of the game, his Multi is rated only A)
- Akira 27k (rated B but in reality an S)
- Jin 27k (rated S)

- Who are the strongest/weakest Pairs?
- Aside from Chun-Li being the weakest by about 5-10% in my tests and Reiji
- being the strongest and easy to level up thanks to his skills, they're all
- surprisingly close. Everyone who hit harder earned less XP (Reiji was at
- 24% after a full round, while Ichiro, Kurt and Zephyr easily makes it to
- 36%). So it's very well balanced. You either get more damage or more XP.
- You have the freedom to offset this by choosing a move with extra XP or
- extra damage for the final +1 attack in the string.
- However, Gemini and X have an auto skill where if you have 120 XP when
- their turn comes around they get a 10% boost and it STAYS on if you go
- below 120 by casting their ATK+15% moves. They can do 60k+ damage in one
- turn.
- Units with ATK boosting skills:
- --ATK+15%--
- Solo: Sanger, Lindow and Busujima.
- Gemini: lv.18 (random skill)
- Ichiro: lv.25
- X: lv.28
- Dante: early 40's?
- Frank: lv.42?
- Kite: lv.43?
- Haken: lv.45
- --ATK+10%:--
- Solo: Lady, Devilotte (random skill)
- X: lv.34
- Kurt: lv.34
- Chun-Li: lv.35
- Gemini: lv.41?
- Jin: early 40's?
- Pair up the 10%'s and 15%'s and you'll get that same awesome boost as X and
- Gemini have on their own.

- Training mode is problematic for testing damage. XP gain is off as well. So
- don't depend on it for anything but general timing practice. The hitboxes
- aren't perfect there either, so it's trouble all the way.
- As a way to test the inconsistencies, try Kogoro, Toma, Dante and Jin:
- -Kogoro's left+A (C rank) does more than right+A (A rank) or close to it.
- -Toma's left+A (B rank) does more than up+A (A rank).
- -Dante's up+A (B rank) does more than right+A (A rank).
- -Jin's up+A (A rank) does more than right+A (A rank). Even his
- neutral (C rank) is stronger.
- This is only a problem in training mode however. I checked the regular game
- and found the numbers to be correct.
- --
- Super (aka Overdrive) attack strength:
- Tested in Chapter 40, they ranged from 19-21k for a normal, non-critical
- Super. A critical Super on the other hand weighed in at 23-25k. I compared
- all 20 teams, so this means they are all very close to each other.
