  8. 1. Item Guide
  9. 2. FAQ and Tips
  10. 3. New Game+ Information
  11. 4. OST Tracklists
  12. 5. Number Crunching

  14. This guide looks best in the Lucida Console fixed-width font.

  16.
  17.
  18.
  19. A few notes before we begin:
  20.
  21. Almost every enemy has a drop. If you defeat the optional bosses for items
  22. you'll get a fair amount of EXP as well, but it can be risky and take a
  23. very long time. Use this guide to decide if an item is worth the effort.
  24.
  25. I've personally scoured the map for every breakable in every chapter. I've
  26. also defeated all the enemies in each and every chapter, so it can be done.
  27. It's just painfully slow. By chapter 20 battles can take 2 hours or more to
  28. check everything.
  29.
  30. It also won't be long before "Wipe out all enemies" is the usual condition
  31. for winning. So not much is optional later on. This guide is a complete
  32. checklist to save you time and makes battles easier on top of it. No running
  33. around to find things when I did the work for you. New Game+ players can
  34. also benefit by knowing which chests to skip, since they contain the old
  35. lower class equipment.

  37.
  38. About breakables:
  39.
  40. Breakables have nothing but healing items inside, if they give anything at
  41. all. The first times you'll find anything is Prologue 3, Chapter 16 and
  42. Chapter 20. After that they'll show up a few times, but overall feel free
  43. to ignore them or just use them as barricades instead. They are not worth
  44. any effort as even the best item you'll get from them is a 100% heal for a
  45. single unit only, which isn't very useful. Multi healing items are much
  46. better to have.

  757.
  758. Strategy: You'll need a large stock of items, so hopefully you saved up.
  759. Now is the time to use them, especially if you don't plan on playing a New
  760. Game+. Many bosses inflict down, so countering is useless. Astaroth, Coco,
  761. Pursuer and Ciseaux do it most often. If you beat Eins and Drei before you
  762. break the shield all top floor bosses respawn. There may be conditions that
  763. I didn't come across, but I'll tell you what I know. Defeat everything in
  764. your way while going up. At the top you can ignore the new bosses and just
  765. get Kogoro to the shield. Upon doing so, more bosses and enemies appear and
  766. any defeated ones reappear. They also respawn once more when the final
  767. boss's HP gets under 100k. So defeating them is generally not a good idea
  768. unless you're trapped by their ZOC. They have no equipment (you can check
  769. their status in the free cursor mode). They drop strong healing items, but
  770. aren't worth the time and resources.
  771.
  772. For the final boss units with a range of 2 can only hit him directly on the
  773. middle of the front, behind or side, not the corners. Boss is immune to
  774. Stun and Down, his Multi's hit 4 units for 8k damage, whereas his counters
  775. do a whopping 10k. When his HP goes under 100k he tried to call
  776. more bosses but it seemed to fail, since I left them alive already. You
  777. can definitely use the smaller enemies to earn XP.
  778.
  779. It's best to have your mass of allies keep the bosses busy by defending
  780. while a few focus on Mr. Final Boss himself. Preferably those with counter
  781. cancels (Bahn, Zephyr, Toma, Neneko, X and Juri). I reloaded my quicksave
  782. and beat all of them on my second try but I took a ton more damage that way.
  783. I can also point out that even beating up every enemy and every boss the
  784. game threw at me, even in this level, that by the end of the game I still
  785. had 85% of my healing items saved. So if you play carefully nothing in the
  786. first playthrough is that hard at all.
  787.
  788. When you win New Game+ becomes available. The hidden options in the menu
  789. are unlocked and enemies and chests will offer some new items in the next
  790. playthrough.

  799.
  800.
  801.
  802.
  803.
  804. Tips for beginners
  805. **************************
  806.
  807.
  808. -Critical hits give +5% exp and are done by timing your attack just before
  809. the enemy lands. Practice in the training room if you need to. I just think
  810. of some moves as "fast" and the others as "slow" to make it simpler.
  811.
  812. -The direction a unit is facing has no bearing on anything in the game.
  813.
  814. -The defend command also prevents any status changes. The full defend is
  815. generally not worth the XP cost, unless you will be KO'd otherwise.
  816.
  817. -If you get a game over you don't keep any exp. It's a complete reload.
  818. -There is no penalty for leaving an injured ally.
  819. -Use your quicksaves since they can be reloaded as many times as you want.
  820.
  821. -There is no optional content or way to replay a chapter. Thus this means
  822. there is no way to grind for exp. Defeating every enemy helps a little at
  823. the beginning, but soon becomes non-optional.
  824.
  825. -Use your items once you have 15+ of them, since the maximum is 20.
  826. -Do not depend on items. Save them for emergencies and use XP instead.
  827. -Learn who your healers are, write them down if you have to.
  828.
  829. -You can use Supers to defeat an enemy during a counter, if you have XP
  830. to spare. Later on it becomes quite inefficient though.
  831.
  832. -Defeat bosses with low level allies to boost their levels. This is very
  833. important. Use a Super for the +20% exp (stacks with items or skills) and
  834. try to get criticals. You can even press Start to end a battle to save a
  835. boss for later.
  836.
  837. -You can do a critical Super. They are instant, so press Y as soon as they
  838. land, not before like with normal attacks. They can bounce a bit and still
  839. make it in time. Training mode is good practice.
  840.
  841. -D on your attacks list (bottom screen) means Down, S = Stun, P = Poison.
  842. Higher TEC means a better chance of inflicting status changes on the enemy,
  843. but generally doesn't matter until you meet bosses that counter every hit.
  844. Down and Stun will prevent their counters.
  845.
  846. -You will start learning Multi Attacks around lv. 18. Frank and Chun-Li
  847. get theirs first. Watch your bottom screen for them.
  848.
  849. -You can press B to skip a Super or enemy boss counter.
  850. -Holding B also let's you run around on the map. Kinda useless though.

  852.
  853. Basic strategy to win battles:
  854.
  855. Keep your HP high using XP, not items. After a battle you gain XP from Cross
  856. Hits, this means it's easy to waste them if you're near or over 100% XP all
  857. the time. Use up the extra beforehand by healing your allies. Rescuing
  858. is more costly than healing frequently.
  859.
  860. Always move in groups. Always. Stagger your units and keep surrounding the
  861. enemies so you have access to Support attacks. This keeps your XP high,
  862. which is crucial in keeping your HP high.
  863. --
  864.
  865. Best time to use Support/Solo:
  866.
  867. If going for XP: use the Solo right at the start, or to /finish/ breaking
  868. their guard (usually earlier is better than cutting it close). This will
  869. keep them on the ground and allow for the most Cross Hits. As the Solo
  870. finishes (2 or 3 seconds after the cut-in) trigger your Support. In the
  871. early parts of the game you'll need to use your Support sooner, before
  872. you run out of attacks. Supports and Solos on their own don't earn any XP.
  873.
  874. If you want exp./criticals, try to time your Supports/Solos when the
  875. enemy is being juggled in place by certain attacks. It's different for
  876. every pair, so the timing is tough. You can try to hit both a Support/Solo
  877. and your attack right before they land but this is a gamble as well.
  878. --
  879.
  880. How do status effects work?
  881.
  882. To explain a little better than the tutorial:
  883. Bind = no skills or items, no support when beside another unit. Can still
  884. respond (counter and defend).
  885.
  886. Stun = can't respond or act as a Support. Stunned enemies = can't counter,
  887. while you get auto guard break and critical first hit on them.
  888.
  889. Down (ally/enemy) = cannot counter. I've heard people say it cancels an
  890. enemy's turn, but I tested it and they still act after being hit with Down.
  891. Only their counter is canceled.
  892. --
  893.
  894. Any important/missable items?
  895.
  896. The most notable are:
  897. Chapter 3, the north chest: Survival Book.
  898. Chapter 8, far west chest: EXP Trainer.
  899. Chapter 24, bottom of the hill on the left: Sandra Soul.
  900. Chapter 27, west chest: Mega Booster.
  901. Chapter 29, Vile's Drill Arm (2nd battle).
  902. Chapter 35, bottom floor chest: Little Ryoma.
  903. Chapter 39, southwest: Hell King's Arm, southeast: Shintai Fragment
  904.
  905. Also, most of the New Game+ items will make a big difference in surviving
  906. the second playthrough. So always get those.
  907. --
  908.
  909. Do any exp. boosts stack together?
  910.
  911. I can confirm that skills (like Kogoro and Ichiro's +20% exp) do stack with
  912. critical hits and Supers.
  913. --
  914.
  915. Why is a move grayed out?
  916.
  917. Item effects cannot be combined with skills. Ex: Equipping the Survival Book
  918. on Kogoro gives +20% exp. Then Kogoro's skill Solo Training (+20% exp)
  919. cannot be used. They also cannot be cast twice on the same character, for
  920. example use Flynn's Range+2 on all allies, then Frank's Range+2 will be
  921. grayed out.
  922. --
  923.
  924. Who are the best healers?
  925.
  926. For Solos, Tron, since she has a 30% heal (ally) and a 50% XP/full HP
  927. rescue. For Pairs, Yuri has a 30% heal for ALL allies and Gemini gets the
  928. same skill later on. These moves are invaluable. Rescuing is very costly,
  929. so don't rely on it.
  930. --
  931.
  932. Is there a soft reset in the game?
  933. Yup, it's in the manual (Home > Manual). Hold L + R and press Start. Hurray!
  934. --
  935.
  936. Can you skip the story text?
  937. You can actually fast forward scenes by holding both R and A.

  944. Advanced Tips
  945. *********************
  946.
  947.
  948. Chapters that have turn limits:
  949.
  950. Except for Chapter 17, 23 and 39, turn limits are lifted once you fulfill
  951. the requirements. In those chapters it will end once you do, preventing you
  952. from finishing up with bosses, enemies and chests.
  953. --
  954.
  955. What is ZOC, really? (Zone of Control)
  956.
  957. The tutorial doesn't explain this one that well. It means there is a
  958. one block radius around an enemy that you cannot get past. You can stop
  959. beside them but not continue on through. This is rarely a problem, but in
  960. Chapter 29 when you have a turn limit they prevent you from getting where
  961. you want to go by standing in the middle of a narrow passageway.
  962.
  963. Additionally, once you're beside an enemy they can sometimes keep you
  964. there. So just remember that enemies are sticky if you get close.
  965. --
  966.
  967. What is EP? (mentioned in the random effect skills)
  968.
  969. The enemy's version of XP. It's almost always full though. It allows them to
  970. use special unblockable attacks and counters.
  971. --
  972.
  973. What is TEC good for?
  974.
  975. Eventually bosses will counter you every time you attack, so a high TEC has
  976. a better chance of Down or Stunning them to prevent it. On that subject,
  977. Supers seem to have a good chance of inflicting status effects.
  978. --
  979.
  980. Who can cancel a counter?
  981.
  982. Bahn, Toma, Neneko, X, Zephyr and Juri via skills. Haken and Frank will
  983. auto-cancel them if under 50% HP. Cancelling is important with late game
  984. bosses. Chris learns a skill late in the game to cancel counters if over
  985. 50 XP.
  986. --
  987.
  988. Who are the best counterers?
  989.
  990. Bahn, Batsu and Chris. They learn HP over 50% = +1 attack during counter
  991. (doesn't stack with the Bajiquan Secret Scrolls item though). Early in the
  992. game Dante learns a +1 counter when over 50 XP.
  993. --
  994.
  995. Is turn order based on speed or is it random?
  996.
  997. Partially random. I reset a chapter a dozen times and saw different starting
  998. order every time. It varies by 3 or 4 positions each reload. So you may go
  999. 1st or 4th, to give a rough idea. This is likely why SPDx2 doesn't guarantee
1000. that you will go first.
  1001.
1002. Another note on SPD: If someone like Ichiro has a slow speed, his Range+2
1003. buff will still affect the whole team, just not until their next turn. At
1004. first I thought if you cast it at the end of a "turn" only those who go
1005. after him would be affected and then when the turn ends the effect is gone.
1006. But no, the effect only wears off once a unit has made a move. So SPD is
1007. only good for making sure the unit will get a chance to attack before
1008. everyone else clears out the enemies by getting there first.
  1009. --
  1010.
1011. Should I use nullify block skills?
  1012.
1013. I don't know why people suggest to, since it takes a maximum of 1 and a half
1014. attacks to break through any guard. You can usually do it for a loss of 7-10
1015. XP, which is more efficient than the skill's cost of 15 XP. You'll do less
1016. damage, but it's better to build up XP for Supers. Late in the game bosses
1017. will counter with a very hard hit every time you attack, so you have to do
1018. the most damage in the least amount of encounter.
  1019.
1020. I would say only use it if you have 110+ XP and you have no healing or
1021. other useful skills. It's better to get used to opening every round with the
1022. unit's guard breaking move so you're always prepared. Practice in the
1023. Training mode, or check the chart in the Number Crunching section below.
  1024.
1025. A somewhat easy way to remember them is when you see them dash through the
1026. enemy to behind them, that's usually their guard breaking move. With other
1027. characters it tends to be when they throw explosives.

  1034. New Game+ Information
  1035. *****************************
  1036.
  1037.
1038. What is unlocked when you beat the game?
  1039.
1040. There are new sound options in the menu, allowing you to listen to the entire
1041. soundtrack and set the music for battles.
  1042. --
  1043.
1044. What is carried over in New Game+?
  1045.
1046. The items you had when you beat the game (so saving some is a good idea)
1047. and your equipment. Levels start again at 1 and go up slower because you
1048. get less exp. Critical hits become almost necessary, especially since XP
1049. is easier to come by, thanks to all the 30% boost in XP gain accessories
1050. you'll have from the beginning.
  1051.
  1052.
  1053. What's different in New Game+?
  1054.
1055. Enemies are stronger. I'd hazard a guess and say by about 50%. Bosses counter
1056. almost every hit, starting already in the early chapters. They have more HP
1057. (I've seen an increase of about 25% so far) and do more damage. The contents
1058. of some chests have been changed. Some of the ones that used to contain
1059. healing items now contain equipment. I think, but am not sure, that they
1060. also drop more powerful items sometimes, such as Tiger Pancakes. This would
1061. explain why the game said after the ending that "enemies and chests" are
1062. different in the new game, since boss drops are the same as before.
  1063. --
  1064.
1065. Is a New Game+ harder or easier?
  1066.
1067. Harder at first because of the lowered exp. Your HP are generally not high
1068. enough at the beginning either. But then it actually gets easier than the
1069. first game by Chapter 20. So feel free to use some of your saved items in
  1070. the early chapters.
  1071. --
  1072.
1073. Will the New Game+ items list be complete?
  1074.
1075. I might not finish it, but you can check the item section of the Japanese
1076. wiki for some if not all of the new items:

  1080.
1081. Are there any /new/ new items in New Game++ (and beyond?)
  1082.
1083. The first New Game+ has new items and that's it. After that it's all repeats
1084. of the 1st and 2nd set of items. There is no 3rd. The enemies' stats don't
1085. change either from 2nd to 3rd playthroughs. Thanks to SaydeWindsaur for
  1086. confirming this.

1329. When to use these: get used to opening every battle with the unit's guard
1330. breaker whether you need it or not. That way you won't have to remember
1331. which one it is later on. Guard breakers are never their strongest moves
1332. anways, so they don't need criticals. The XP moves are for the rare cases
1333. when you want to repeat an attack rather than go for the +1 after using all
  1334. of the others.
  1335. --
  1336.
  1337. Multi attack strength:
  1338.
1339. The units who can hit four squares away have the weakest attack. The ones
1340. with three for range are about 25-33% stronger. Akira and Jin can only hit
1341. two enemies in a very limited range but do about 200-225% damage. Ryu's an
1342. oddball in my game at least. He does about 175% damage with the same limit
  1343. of two. Example:
  1344.
  1345. Chun-Li: 11k
  1346. Gemini: 14k
  1347. Ryu:: 20k
  1348. Jin/Akira: 25k
  1349.
1350. It helps to know if a Multi is strong enough to defeat enemies ahead of time
1351. or not. Also, if you look close Akira's Multi is rated B strength when it's
  1352. clearly an S like Jin's. So maybe it's a little buggy. Ryu's is rated A, so
1353. I guess they didn't mean for all the two hitters to have super strength.
  1354.
1355. Multi Attacks can be boosted with ATK+15% (like Sanger and Busujima). Other
1356. ATK boosts probably stack as well.
  1357.
  1358.
1359. Here's some more data to prove how it works. Taken from Chapter 40. Everyone
1360. was level 50 or 51, except X and Reiji at 52 and 53. Tested against bosses
1361. with DEF of 350 and 375, so DEF has no effect.
  1362.
  1363. Range 4:
  1364. Chun-Li 13k
  1365. Soma 13k
  1366. Kite 13k
  1367. Ichiro 14k
  1368. Haken 14k
  1369. X 14k
  1370. Kurt 13k
  1371.
  1372. Range 3
  1373. Kogoro 15k
  1374. Frank 15k
1375. Reiji 17k (slightly higher level and it's, well, Reiji)
  1376. Zephyr 16k
  1377. Dante 16k
  1378. Gemini 16k
  1379. Yuri 15k
  1380. KOS-MOS 16k
  1381. Toma 16k
  1382. Chris 16k
  1383.
  1384. Range 2:
1385. Ryu 23k (the oddball of the game, his Multi is rated only A)
1386. Akira 27k (rated B but in reality an S)
  1387. Jin 27k (rated S)

  1389.
  1390.
1391. Who are the strongest/weakest Pairs?
  1392.
1393. Aside from Chun-Li being the weakest by about 5-10% in my tests and Reiji
1394. being the strongest and easy to level up thanks to his skills, they're all
1395. surprisingly close. Everyone who hit harder earned less XP (Reiji was at
1396. 24% after a full round, while Ichiro, Kurt and Zephyr easily makes it to
1397. 36%). So it's very well balanced. You either get more damage or more XP.
1398. You have the freedom to offset this by choosing a move with extra XP or
1399. extra damage for the final +1 attack in the string.
  1400.
1401. However, Gemini and X have an auto skill where if you have 120 XP when
1402. their turn comes around they get a 10% boost and it STAYS on if you go
1403. below 120 by casting their ATK+15% moves. They can do 60k+ damage in one
  1404. turn.
  1405.
1406. Units with ATK boosting skills:
  1407.
  1408. --ATK+15%--
  1409.
1410. Solo: Sanger, Lindow and Busujima.
  1411.
  1412. Gemini: lv.18 (random skill)
  1413. Ichiro: lv.25
  1414. X: lv.28
  1415. Dante: early 40's?
  1416. Frank: lv.42?
  1417. Kite: lv.43?
  1418. Haken: lv.45
  1419.
  1420. --ATK+10%:--
  1421.
1422. Solo: Lady, Devilotte (random skill)
  1423.
  1424. X: lv.34
  1425. Kurt: lv.34
  1426. Chun-Li: lv.35
  1427. Gemini: lv.41?
  1428. Jin: early 40's?
  1429.
1430. Pair up the 10%'s and 15%'s and you'll get that same awesome boost as X and
1431. Gemini have on their own.
  1432. --
  1433.
1434. Training mode is problematic for testing damage. XP gain is off as well. So
1435. don't depend on it for anything but general timing practice. The hitboxes
1436. aren't perfect there either, so it's trouble all the way.
  1437.
1438. As a way to test the inconsistencies, try Kogoro, Toma, Dante and Jin:
  1439.
1440. -Kogoro's left+A (C rank) does more than right+A (A rank) or close to it.
  1441. -Toma's left+A (B rank) does more than up+A (A rank).
  1442. -Dante's up+A (B rank) does more than right+A (A rank).
  1443. -Jin's up+A (A rank) does more than right+A (A rank). Even his
1444. neutral (C rank) is stronger.
  1445.
1446. This is only a problem in training mode however. I checked the regular game
1447. and found the numbers to be correct.
  1448. --
  1449.
1450. Super (aka Overdrive) attack strength:
  1451.
1452. Tested in Chapter 40, they ranged from 19-21k for a normal, non-critical
1453. Super. A critical Super on the other hand weighed in at 23-25k. I compared
1454. all 20 teams, so this means they are all very close to each other.
