  1. Reading EvE history, I've always been fascinated by the era
  2. of the spider-tanked "Pantheon" carrier. What's a "spider
  3. tank", some of the new players may ask? The basic idea is to
  4. get a bunch of ships with good Remote Repairer and Remote
  5. Capacitor Transfer (RCT) module bonuses and, rather than
  6. having them act as support for an existing fleet, just let
  7. them *be the fleet.* I want to be part of that, but (a) I
  8. can't fly capital ships and (b) Pantheon carriers
  9. really aren't a thing since a bunch of CCP changes to reduce
  10. their overpowerededness in this role.
  11.
  12. I will admit to working on what a spider-tanked Velator
  13. fleet would look like. That's how much I want this.
  14.
  15. Anyway, I got to thinking that Signal Cartel needs a
  16. spider-tanked Hugsfleet™. Following that train of
  17. thought down its dubious tracks, the obvious choice seemed
  18. to be a logistic (logi) cruiser. Normally, subcapital logi
  19. ships wouldn't make a good spider-tanked fleet, since it's
  20. so hard to fit them for damage while still keeping their
  21. repair abilities up. But *We Are Signal Cartel.* Festival
  22. launchers require no fitting resources to speak of.
  23.
  24. The next question was how much tank I could get out of
  25. fleeted logi cruisers. The answer turned out to be
  26. devastatingly small. Maybe I'm missing something, but it
  27. sure looks like a good local tank will totally trump
  28. anything that the remote reppers on a reasonable-sized fleet
  29. of logi cruisers can do. A few hundred EHP (Effective Hit
  30. Points, a measure of damage taking resists into account) per
  31. ship per second is all I could get out of the spider. If you
  32. could that from several ships onto one target it starts to
  33. look like something, but dealing with target-switching and
  34. multi-targeting was going to require a bigger fleet of logi
  35. cruisers than I believed Signal Cartel could field. After
  36. all, logi cruisers are expensive high-skill ships, and we'd
  37. just be in them for the love.
  38.
  39. --
  40.
  41. While looking at some logi fits on
  42. [O.smium](http://o.smium.org), though, I rediscovered a
  43. well-known (but not to ignorant me) tanking style that just
  44. might work\: the "Tinker Tank". The basic idea is simple:
  45. give up on the remote repairers and concentrate on Remote
  46. Capacitor Transfer (RCT) modules to power a partner's local
  47. tank. The Tinker is a tanking style that has been and is
  48. widely used in EvE tournament play.
  49.
  50. (An aside for the unfamiliar: RCTs are "speshul". You can
  51. transfer some of your capacitor to another ship, but *that
  52. ship receives much more capacitor than you consume.* Thus,
  53. if two ships with RCTs apply them to each other, they both
  54. get a potentially very large capacitor bonus using nothing
  55. but their high slots.)
  56.
  57. The common plan is to use a hull with good local repair
  58. (Armor Repairer or Shield Booster) bonuses and free up all
  59. the capacitor generation needed to run the thing by relying
  60. on another ship's RCTs. The RCTs need only high slots, and
  61. the tank mounted can be fierce. A logi ship with large
  62. RCT bonuses can work too, though.
  63.
  64. Thus was born the Hugs Tinker Basilisk. I chose a local
  65. Shield Booster active tank because it left the low slots
  66. free for other needed fittings, and I needed the logi
  67. cruiser RCT bonus that only the Basilisk and the Guardian
  68. have. (I also tried some other shield tank options, but none
  69. of them really worked out.)
  70.
  71. The Hugs Tinker Basilisk turns out to be able to repair more
  72. than 2100 EHP per second. Let me say that again. 2100
  73. EHP/s. Oh, and please shoot it with railguns. 2900 EHP/s
  74. against Antimatter.
  75.
  76. The Hugs Tinker has a Mandatory Festival Launcher. It has an
  77. Electronic Counter Measures (ECM, "jamming" opponents from
  78. attaining target lock) module along with the usual ECM
  79. drones, to help it avoid damage and get away when the hugs
  80. are returned a bit too vigorously. It is *cap stable* in
  81. fleets of two or more, and has a *spare RCT* for unforeseen
  82. circumstances (e.g. application of Energy Neutralizers by
  83. the target of affections).
  84.
  85. The cost is pretty "reasonable" at 151M ISK of fittings on a
  86. 213M ISK hull. If price is no object, for 1B ISK total
  87. (pinkie to corner of mouth) the tank can be blinged up
  88. (Pithum C-Type Adaptive Invulnerability Fields, Gist X-Type
  89. EM Ward Field, Co-Processor II, Multispectral ECM II) to an
  90. astounding 2900 EHP/s against uniform damage.
  91.
  92. This feels like a good fit.

  119.
  120. (A word about the Pith X-Type X-Large Shield Booster. At 67M
  121. ISK this is a cheap module for what it is able to do. In my
  122. opinion every shield booster fit for cruisers or larger
  123. should consider using this.)
  124.
  125. So what are the downsides? Many.
  126.
  127. 1. This is a high-skill super-tight fit. My engineering
  128. skills are pretty good, and yet this fit uses 99.31% of
  129. CPU and 99.58% of powergrid for me.
  130.
  131. 2. 364M ISK is still a lot of ISK for something that will
  132. almost certainly be blown up sooner or later.
  133.
  134. 3. There's no propulsion module (Afterburner or Micro Warp
  135. Drive) so the escape plan depends entirely on being able
  136. to jam the opponent with ECM and warp out. A
  137. jam-resistant tackler is going to just hold the victim
  138. until enough firepower is brought to bear.
  139.
  140. 4. A jamming ship (Falcon, Blackbird, etc) can stop the RCTs
  141. from working. This leaves 10s of cap and then the tank
  142. just vanishes. (The normal plan is to jam the enemy
  143. jammer first, but this isn't really Credo compliant.)
  144.
  145. 5. A Void Bomb, if somebody happened to have one handy,
  146. would completely empty the capacitor, draining the energy
  147. needed for the RCTs to operate. See 4.
  148.
  149. 6. This ship has only 14600 EHP of actual shields. A very
  150. powerful "alpha strike" could blow through them like wet
  151. paper, rendering the fast local repair rate as moot as
  152. some analogy involving mootness.
  153.
  154. 7. Finally, and importantly, the resists (against the four
  155. possible incoming damage types) aren't all that
  156. even. This ship handles "only" about 1500 EHP/s against
  157. EM damage and 1600 EHP/s against explosive.
  158.
  159. Nonetheless, I'm eager to go Tinker Hug someone. If it's
  160. possible within the limits of the Credo, a small idle
  161. gatecamp gang without ECM might be an ideal objet d'amour.
  162.
  163. But I'll need at least one partner...
  164.

  167. *[Thanks to @Thera-Scanner for correcting my broken history
  168. in an earlier draft.]*

  171.
  172. OK, shred away! I'll be disappointed if someone doesn't find
  173. a serious problem with or an easy improvement of this fit.
