  1. Pokémon Yellow Any% Glitchless F.A.Q.
  2.
  3. Q: What are you trying to do?
  4. A: I am trying to complete Pokémon Yellow as fast as possible, without using any glitches
  5.
  6. Q: What does Glitchless mean in the category name?
  7. A: Glitchless means I am not allowed to use any glitches during my speedrun. There are a number of glitches that would make this game much faster than 2 hours, however those techniques are not allowed. The idea is that this speedrun is playing Pokémon Yellow "the way it was intended"
  8.
  9. Q: What is your best time?
  10. A: My best time is 2:01:10, achieved on October 28, 2017
  11.
  12. Q: What is the World Record?
  13. A: The best time is 1:54:36 by Gunnermaniac, achieved on October 22, 2017
  14.
  15. Q: What are you playing this on?
  16. A: I am playing this on a GameCube with a Gameboy player attachment. I use a Gameboy Advance SP as my controller
  17.
  18. Q: Where can you save time?
  19. A: I can save time in many places. Biggest timesaves are on Nidoran, Brock, Mt. Moon, Lt. Surge, HM02 and Victory Road
  20.
  21. Q: What Pokémon do you use in the run?
  22. A: I will be using a Nidoran M/Nidorino/Nidoking as my main Pokémon, Pidgey for Fly, Charmander for Dig/Cut and Lapras for Strength/Surf
  23.
  24. Q: Is this different than Pokémon Red speedruns??
  25. A: Very much so. Many of the "boss" fights (Rival, Gym Leaders, Rockets etc) are different and have much harder teams to deal with. Because of that, much of the run is very different. The overall strategy is the same (use Nidoking to steamroll the game), but the specifics are very different
  26.
  27. Q: Why do you name yourself/rival/Pokémon a 1 character name?
  28. A: We set our options to have a Text Speed of Fast, however text still scrolls onto the screen at 1 character per frame. By naming the characters and some Pokémon a 1 character name, we can save a few minutes of time over the course of the run on text, with the cost of a second or two by bringing up the naming screen
  29.
  30. Q: What is RNG manipulation?
  31. A: RNG manipulation is a newly utilized strategy that allows us to use carefully planned saves and reloads to influence some of the randomness in the run to give us results we want. We can do this consistently by buffering inputs so that they are accepted on the first possible frame, giving us "frame perfect" inputs which will give us the same RNG each time
  32.
  33. Q: How is RNG manipulation used in the run?
  34. A: Currently, RNG manipulation is used in three places during the run. We use it to get a lvl 6 Nidoran M on Route 2 with very good stats. We use it in Viridian Forest to get a Pidgey after a long stretch with no encounters. We use it in Mt. Moon to give us no encounters. Currently, I am not very good at the Moon manip, but we still attempt it on each run
  35.
  36. Q: What are DVs?
  37. A: DVs are the number, 0-15, given to a stat to determine the stat growth. The higher the number, the better the stat
  38.
  39. Q: Each time RNG manipulation is used, you waste 20 seconds on the save and reset. Wouldn't it be faster to just get good luck?
  40. A: Technically, yes, however consistency yields better results than just good luck. I would much rather be given more attempts with pretty good luck than a run or two with very good luck. Besides, with the save and reset taking about 20 seconds, that equates to 2 encounters (failed Nido dsum, or just 2 encounters in Mt. Moon). We might be losing a little bit of time in each place, but the important part is that we aren't losing a run in those places anymore
  41.
  42. Q: What is your goal time?
  43. A: My goal time is currently 1:59:59. Once I get that, we'll see how the run feels and continue, or move on to something else
